MLB - Sports Rumors

“JasonThe San Francisco Giants want to add a player with a big bat this off-season and the word is that the Boston Red Sox's Jason Bay(notes) will be the prime target, according to the Boston Globe.

The Giants, who've needed a big offensive threat ever since Barry Bonds(notes) receded into the fog, are apparently ready to open their wallet for a fella like Bay or Matt Holliday(notes), both of whom will be free agents soon enough.

The Red Sox are apparently hoping to retain Bay, but he has his home in Seattle and rumor has it he'd like to return to the West Coast.

Bay is going to to return to Boston next year because it doesn't seem to to me that bay wants to test free agency
and Epstein would JUMP to give him a 5-year deal for about 15,000,000 a year. Also the Giants have Angel Villalona as a good hitter in a year and not much money left in the budget

Unless you are an absolute "IDIOT" you have to know Bay is going to test Free Agency Market ,if he wasn't he would have signed an extension at the beginning of the year when the Red Sox were pushing for it!!!! #2&3 Come on I know it's early, but wake up, it's sooooooooooooooooo obvious!!! I also think as much as the Giants want to win, the pressure is far less there than in Boston!! I don't think, I know!! And it doesn't appear that Bay is a real pressure cooker type person, being Candadian he's more of a U.S. West Coast layed back person!! If it's not San Francisco it will be somewhere away from the East Coast of The United States!!!!!

Let Bay go and get the draft picks. Resign Victor Martinez, then sign an outfielder for a couple of years (maybe Damon?) until one of the kids in the minors are ready (and there are a lot of them in the Red Sox system) and then get ready for the Joe Mauer sweepstakes in '10 if he is still available. Bay is not worth the money.

jason bay isn't as good as most people think.
he gets a lot of hype because he won ROY back in the days and he now plays for the sox.
his defense is horrible. his batting average has been up and down season to season.
matt holliday is also pretty bad. he can only hit in the coors or with albert pujols in front of him.
he's not a difference maker. if anything, his best career move would be a return to the rockies, but their outfield is stacked.

@bryan: i'm a yankees fan, but if you think SF is gonna be better than boston, you are out of your cotton picking mind. red sox have the financial resources to revamp the team 100% if the current mix doesn't work. the giants have lincecum and cain and a bunch of scrubs. they're never gonna amount to anything after they disrespected barry bonds, a man who devoted the best year of his career to this team. (let's just call it the barry bonds curse) it's a joke that you are comparing these 2 teams.

SF has the money to spend. Winn's $8M is gone. Molina's money will be gone (give the job to Posey). Bay and SF are a good match.
If Boston is planning on keeping Victor, Kotchman, and Ortiz......might not be a bad idea to play Youk in LF and have Kotchman and Victor split 1B (when Vic isn't catching).....

Unless the giants decide to drastically increase their payroll this can't happen. Yeah, we're gaining a bunch of money in expiring contracts, but Brian Wilson and Tim Lincecum are going to go to arbitration meaning most of that new money will be given to them. If they could add a Jason Bay/Holliday type and trade Sanchez, Cain, or Bumgarner for another hitter (NO, not Shea Hillenbrand or Ryan Garko type acquisitions) the Giants could finally have a complete team again.

#8 FELIX CAMPITI tell that to #2 skiorpes...he seem to not have a clue when it comes to $$$
#10 William B , Damon can't play the OF...have you seen the guy catch and throw lately?
#12 Bryan, I agree but a couple of replacements and they are back in the run for the next 2-4 yrs! It's all about their offense...I said this last season that aving a great pitching rotation and bullpen won't cut it if the offense is inconsistent. That is the case
Finally, they need to keep Victor but more importantly they must resign Bay and sign Mauer!!! Tek must retire so that the team can move forward (I said this last season). Trade Ortiz or cut him...they have Lowell that they can use for the DH/3B. Youlk can play 1B/#B. Victor can play 1B/C. Mauer can play C/DH This team is not done...it is still a great team but they need a big bat. I hope you Sox fans took off your blind folds and recognize the lack of.
Real, I am right again huh and you can't stand me huh! If you just calm down and take off your blind fold you will see that my comments has validity and we can make better debates instead of calling crazy all the times. Just happens that I am correct all the times but I am sure I will be wrong occasionally! Well, have a good off season and hope for your Sox to pick up a big bat and stop going after old broken down players.

I say san fran has no chance of getting bay.The money will be there for bay and either signs with boston or ny who are the leading contenders for him.Besides bay wants to play for a contender. The redsox need to unload some contracts next season meaning tek let him go or just reitre, wake is another thing.Let him go or just retire.Keep kotchman, bay, papi, and lowell too, very important keep vmart to be the starting catcher for 2 years and try to get mauer in 2011 or if he gets traded in the deadline next season.Keep beckett, and if the correct offer comes along trade papelbon considering what he did yesterday.

The Giants will have the best #3 hitter in baseball if they can make an attractive offer. Boston should have won their playoff this year, but their pitching wasn't up to snuff. San Francisco has the best pitching staff in baseball and have a wonderful ballpark. Bay may be tempted to move back out west nearer his home.

There is no way Bay is worth $75M over 5 years. SF already made a worse mistake in giving Rowand $60M over 5. It won't happen again. Bay does not hit for a high enough average to be a difference maker by the bay. They are already going in the direction of BA with speed and manufacturing runs. A big bat would be nice, but Bay's bat won't be big in that lineup in that ballpark. And Boston made a huge mistake when they didn't add pitching. Martinez is great, but pitching was/is their greater need. The Phillies got Lee for very little. Boston could have had him and so could the Dodgers. LA will never win a WS with their starters regardless playing the Yankees or Angels..

joarby2 - I almost always agree with your comments but do you really think the Sox have great starting pitching? It's not deep and the top two (which is all they really have) are very good but not great at this stage of their careers. Lester is probably rising and Beckett declining.

I think another move boston has to make is trade somebody worth it for felix in seattle cause even though he gets injured alot he is so young and very good with a average club.A good rotation with lester, beckett, dicek, felix, and wake if he doesn't retire. Most importantly they need to shed some contracts with wake, tek, drew, papi or lowell to clear room for 1 of those to be dh,and definatly a must keep bay and vmart, and josh too.

Bay is worth 15M a year, and I SO hope anybody but Boston gets him. Boston LOVES to steal people for less money than they are worth, wanting that "loyalty of the Red Sox" discount. He's the best player they got offensively. Giants become contenders with him cleaning up I think. Good move. Hope it happens!
