Carl Pavano, a free-agent bust for the Yankees, will be a member of manager Eric Wedge's starting rotation on opening day if he can stay healthy in spring training.
The Indians signed Pavano on Tuesday to a one-year, $1.5 million incentive-laden contract. Last season Pavano, as part of a four-year, $40 million deal with the Yankees, made $11 million.

"If he's healthy, he'll be in the rotation," said GM Mark Shapiro. "And we expect him to be healthy."

Pavano can make another $5.3 million in performance incentives with the Tribe. They don't kick in until he's made 18 starts.

"I think we're getting him at the right time," said Shapiro. "He tried hard to justify his contract in New York, but obviously he had a tough go of it. I know he was disappointed. He expressed to us that he's extremely motivated and eager for a new start."

Shapiro wanted a veteran starter. Pavano, 33 on Thursday, could be it. He would fit nicely behind Cy Young winner Cliff Lee and former 19-game winner Fausto Carmona. Spring training will determine who fills the other two spots.

After signing free-agent closer Kerry Wood to a two-year, $20.5 million deal and taking on third baseman Mark DeRosa's $5.5 million salary in a trade with the Cubs, Shapiro didn't have much to spend on a starter. The Indians looked at several pitchers.

"With our limited resources we were looking for a veteran with upside," said Shapiro.

I think they meant they see a veteran with DL upside.

The guy knows how to pitch. He didn't want to get injured. $h!t happens. Some players don't care if they play because their contract will still get paid. Stephon Marbury, the NBA cancer, come to mind. He even bragged about it. He isn't even hurt. Pavano worked his butt off to make it back. He showed at the end of theseason he can still get people out. Give the guy a chance.

For a 1 year, incentive laden deal, why not. Indians need rotation depth and this leaves Pavano with something to pitch for this season: another contract. Just look at 2004 and the year he had before his contract expired.

Carl Pavano is the luckiest guy ever to play MLB. He and his agent raked GM Brian Cashman and the Yankees for multi-millions, and there is actually a team still willing to throw money at him and his agent. Isn't America a beautiful company. Hurry for capitalism!

After sitting on his hind end for the duration with the Yanks, watch him be a top notch pitcher this year---it's do or die and usually when it comes to that they either start hitting or pitching!
Goooo, Yankees---keep the jealous Brewers simmering!

Carl Pavano is the beach bum of baseball. He is an accident on his way to happening. So many things to go wrong with him from an ingrown toenail to a boil on his butt which probably originated from sitting on his butt for three years. He is the panhandler of baseball. His name should be Dudley Do little.

Not a bad gamble. There is almost no use on his arm for the last 4 years. I wish him luck, except for when he pitches against the Angels.

With the recent bullpen additions all he needs to do is give them five innings per start. Can he do it? Guess we'll have to wait and see. But, you've got to like the way Shapiro did the contract.

I think this is a low-risk, high-reward undertaking by the Indians - and I like it.

At 1.5M, he's worth a one-year shot. They pencil him in as the third starter and the league pencils him in for DL in April, June, and August...possibly all months between.

I would say, nowhere to go but up. How could he do any worse than he has while he collected the $40 mil from the Spankees. Why not give him a shot?
