Phil Hughes returns to a major league mound Tuesday night when the New York Yankees play the Tigers with another chance to fulfill some of that promise and live up to some of those sky-high expectations.
His success or failure could determine whether Joe Girardi keeps his job, whether Joba Chamberlain goes back to the bullpen, whether the New York Yankees make the post-season tournament, according to the New York Daily News.
The Daily News wrote: Obviously he plugs the Chien-Ming Wang spot in the starting rotation, but beyond that, he gives the Yankees flexibility to make the move they may need to save their season. Yes, Joba Chamberlain. It's an old debate but with a new twist, since Brian Bruney is out now with an elbow injury, leaving a bullpen — in front of Mariano Rivera — that could be hazardous to Joe Girardi's job status at some point.
The Daily News noted that while there is no current consideration of moving Chamberlain out of the rotation, he has yet to show the stuff of a dominating starter.
