MLB - Sports Rumors

Houston Astros GM Ed Wade used to run the Philadelphia Phillies and was responsible for drafting Ryan Howard(notes), Chase Utley(notes), and Cole Hamels(notes) as well as hiring the Phils' manager, Charlie Manuel. It looks like Wade is distracting himself from his past team's success with a lot of interviews to fill the open managerial slot in Space City.

Fox26 is reporting that Wade has the number of candidates down to four: former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta, Boston Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills(notes), former Astros manager Phil Garner, and interim manager Dave Clark.

Wade reportedly considered ten different folks in the first round of interviews and then chopped his list down. One of the fellas in the first round was supposedly Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly.

Whatever happens, Wade will surely do better than the parachuting trip he took in 2007 just before he was hired by the Astros when he managed to finish the jump off by getting caught in a tree and hanging up there till somebody could come untangle him.

I like Brad Mills. He has worked his way up in the Boston organization, has been tutored by the great Terry Franconna, and is the type of wiiner Houston needs to start winning again. Phil Garner is an old, Oakland A's player, and knows what is all about to belong to a championship ballclub. He has managed in Houston before. I don''t know why they ever let him go. But give the new guy a chance.

The Farm system is weak. They need better talent and better scouting. The manager is simply molding the clay of the system and it needs help.

Its a long term building project, More. That's why they need a fresh, new manager. Phol Garner would have no patience for rebuilding. He's good at motivating old stars.

Why is Phil Garner on this list? Didn't Ed Wade fire him? How many people get fired froma job and get hired back cause your replacement got fired?? That's very bassackwards!!! We need some new blood on here! Someone who won't bow to egos but make it work!! Brad Mills would be awesome cause he is coming from a winner!! Let's get it together 'stros!!

Ned Yost slowly but surely improved the Brewers (who?) for 6 years b/f he was fired during a crunch time losing streak. He is a disiple of Bobby Cox and will be a great manager for a big league club for a long time. Too bad it won't be the Astros.

I'm sorry but Ed Wade didn't get us in this mess we are in anymore than Phil Garner did. I've said it before but we sold our souls for 2004-05 and, actually, without Garner pushing all the right buttons...we wouldnt have gotten as far as we did...even with Clemens and Pettite.

Wade is given undue credit in the first paragraph for drafting Howard, Utley, and Hamels. Those guys came to Philly mainly because of Farm Director Mike Arbuckle.

If it isn't going to be Phil Garner I suppose I would be happy with Manny Acta.
He is an Astro alumni and he knows baseball. The fact that he was fired from the Washington Nationals should not be held against him.
I do not know anything about Brad Mills, but he has worked for a class operation. I will study up on him

Ed Wade did not fire Phil Garner. McLane fired Tim Purpura (one of the people you can blame for our crummy farm system) and Scrap on the same day in August of 07, replacing them with Tal Smith and Cecil Cooper, respectively. Smith was acting GM until Ed Wade was hired at the end of September 07, and Smith then went back to being president of baseball operations for the team.

Bring back Shawn Chacon as player/manager and general manager! Would save Drayton a bunch of money and there would be an easy goat come October 2010. As it is, the Drayton/Wade train isn't going anywhere.

Too bad you can't fire yourself, Drayton McLane; you are an imbecile. You actually think you can make money on the baseball operations. Drayton, please sell the team to someone with some baseball sense. If you can't sell because of your ego, tell Wade to hire Garner, at least he has a baseball mind. Maybe he can get this team to play for him; Cecil sure couldn't. And maybe next time, you will actually do some MANAGING in the playoffs!

Manny Acta is a perfect fit for this team he has baseball knowledge way beyond his years and also can keep the clubhouse together. You can't look back at his tour with the Nats no-one could have came through that hapless management and poor talent looking good. Considering, he actually did very well and the interim Riggleman pretty much followed the Acta plan
He happened to have inherited a better offense and even some better pitching that Acta had worked into place.
Astros would do well with this guy
