The Dallas Mavericks' free-agent haul was subtle. Adding Gerald Green and reacquiring DeSagana Diop is nice, but it doesn't answer the tough question. Has yet another team passed the Mavericks, who were good enough only for the seventh playoff seed last season?
The Los Angeles Clippers have blown off the cobwebs from their wallet and will sign Baron Davis to a five-year contract worth about $13 million per season. Assuming Elton Brand re-signs with them, the Clippers have two great reasons to feel they are a solid playoff team, although their roster remains thin.
Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle had it pegged when he said, "The West is loaded." It's getting moreso by the day during free agency.

and i agree with douglass, rick is a good coach, dirk an MVP, jkidd may be old but still one of the best points in this league. if they can get an athletic swingman and the entire team commits to defense they can easily have home court for the first round

I'll take the Mav's over a team who's best post player is 6'8 any day.
Not to mention a coach who is coming in to replace a guy who just wasn't ready to take over a championship caliber team. AJ is a good coach, but he needs to learn more about managing games.....everytime they called a timeout at the end of a game to draw up a play it was ISO to dirk at the elbow, or an awkwardly drawn up screen that usually resulted in a turnover. I wont even get into his defensive planning....dudes never heard of a double team.
