Chien-Ming Wang remains hopeful that he can return sometime next month to help the New York Yankees down the stretch, but manager Joe Girardi - who prides himself on being optimistic — isn't expecting to have his ace back for the regular season, he revealed Friday.
Wang, who has been out since mid-June with a partially torn tendon and a sprained right foot, will visit the doctor again on Tuesday, but he isn't expected to begin any weight-bearing exercises until the following week.
"The chances of us getting him back Sept. 1 are zero," Girardi said. "Oct. 1? It's possible."
Wang said he hadn't been told that a September return was out of the question, so he's keeping that as his goal while he continues to rehab. Of course, the Yankees will have to do some serious work over the next two months to make sure they have a game for Wang to pitch in October. With Wang likely sidelined for the final 53 games of the season, the Yankees will go with Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain, Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner for the present.
Should either Ponson or Rasner falter, Ian Kennedy and Alfredo Aceves are waiting in the wings at Triple-A, while Phil Hughes (ribs) and Carl Pavano (shoulder surgery) are rehabbing. The Yankees could also make a waivers deal.

It isn't quite that bad. Abreu is 5th in the AL in rbis. Damon is 7th in hitting. A-Rod isn't doing what he did last year mainly he has no one protecting him. He is not seeing good pitches. Giambi is slumping again. It is obvious how much they miss Matsui and Posada. Nady will produce. Lets hop the get & stay hot starting today.

If the bats don't wake up it will be a long winter. Giambi is not protecting A-Rod. He misses Matsui. As long as they don't have someone behind A-Rod producing, he will not see any good pitches. The pitchers are not challenging him. It is down an away & up & in. That is why he doesn't have more HR'S.
