Girardi says Wang out until October

Chien-Ming Wang remains hopeful that he can return sometime next month to help the New York Yankees down the stretch, but manager Joe Girardi - who prides himself on being optimistic — isn't expecting to have his ace back for the regular season, he revealed Friday.

Wang, who has been out since mid-June with a partially torn tendon and a sprained right foot, will visit the doctor again on Tuesday, but he isn't expected to begin any weight-bearing exercises until the following week.

"The chances of us getting him back Sept. 1 are zero," Girardi said. "Oct. 1? It's possible."

Wang said he hadn't been told that a September return was out of the question, so he's keeping that as his goal while he continues to rehab. Of course, the Yankees will have to do some serious work over the next two months to make sure they have a game for Wang to pitch in October. With Wang likely sidelined for the final 53 games of the season, the Yankees will go with Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain, Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner for the present.

Should either Ponson or Rasner falter, Ian Kennedy and Alfredo Aceves are waiting in the wings at Triple-A, while Phil Hughes (ribs) and Carl Pavano (shoulder surgery) are rehabbing. The Yankees could also make a waivers deal.

Starting pitching, it is tough to win without quality starters.

Even though Ponson had an outstanding start last night Cashman will have to work some more magic. If the bats don't wake up we will be home in October.

you can have all the pitching in the world, but if you overpriced sorry a$$ offense can't score a run what difference does it make. The entire Yankee batting order should publicly apologize to their fans for the way they played this entire year. Giradi needs to get his head out of where ever he stuck it and shakeup the top 5 batters who can't seem to drive in a run or even hit when it matters.6,7,and 8 hitters have better production. Yankee Pride not from the top 5.

It isn't quite that bad. Abreu is 5th in the AL in rbis. Damon is 7th in hitting. A-Rod isn't doing what he did last year mainly he has no one protecting him. He is not seeing good pitches. Giambi is slumping again. It is obvious how much they miss Matsui and Posada. Nady will produce. Lets hop the get & stay hot starting today.

#10 I'm with you on that one, give him a shot. He always pitches a lot of innings, go for it, providing he is cheap. #12 And I'm with you on that one, providing he has recovered from his injury.

I say the Yanks have a lot of hard work ahead of them to make the playoffs, but they can do it. Man for man they are better than both Tampa Bay and Boston, especially now that Manny is gone!! Manny had to go, no doubt about it, but to give $7 Million,Hansen and Moss along with Manny to get Bay, a little to expensive!!

    Hi Felix,
If the bats don't wake up it will be a long winter. Giambi is not protecting A-Rod. He misses Matsui. As long as they don't have someone behind A-Rod producing, he will not see any good pitches. The pitchers are not challenging him. It is down an away & up & in. That is why he doesn't have more HR'S.

I knew this week would be the same exact thing for ny cause anaheim really should shut us down too and will do the same to ny and half way to a sweep.

Hey Dav, You are not kidding at all. I think I heard that Matsui may be able to return this month, and that maybe a scope could be done in the off season? I don't know about Matsui's future, two different knee surgeries in two years? Good thing he doesn't depend on speed. Giambi most definately has to start to get hot, A-Rod does need someone hitting behind him, maybe they may have to move Nady behind him. I really don't know. Did you notice Cano in the field the last two days? Granted a lot of hard hit balls, but he looked a little lost at times!! Sid the Squid probably can't pitch any better than he did last night, felt bad for him. I still worry more than a little having Sid and Rasner as #4 and 5. There has to be someone getting ready to step in, hopefully. One more thing, did we really need Pudge? I like Molina, and he is a better defensive catcher anyhow!! Got to go a try to negotiate for that Eldorado!!! I'll be back on tonight!! Have a good afternoon.

Wang in October? He has already proven he can't pitch in October.
    And a 200 mil + payroll can't even score 1 run?
Even Derek Jeter is burning out (downhill ever since they signed ARod for forever).
THERE WILL BE NO OCTOBER FOR THESE PIGS1

The Japanese players are good, but they always seem to be breaking down. I do not think they are as well conditioned as American athletes. We have had the same problem in Boston, Dice K, Okajima, They need to hit the weights.
