The San Francisco Giants' pursuit of free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, previously considered casual, is apparently serious. Two industry sources said on Thursday that the Giants have reaffirmed their interest in Hudson, who is widely regarded as the leading free agent available at his position according to MLB.com.

No deal is imminent, as is the case with the other free agents atop the Giants' shopping list, including left-hander CC Sabathia, shortstops Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria and, possibly, right-hander Juan Cruz. But the Giants' signing on Monday of left-hander Jeremy Affeldt — the first free agent to come to terms — demonstrated the club's intent to seek talent aggressively this offseason.

Hudson, who turns 31 on Dec. 12, is among the Majors' most multidimensional infielders. The three-time Gold Glove winner hit a career-high .305 last season with eight home runs, 41 RBIs and a .367 on-base percentage for the Arizona Diamondbacks. A switch-hitter, Hudson owns a lifetime .282 average.

Hudson plays one of several positions where the Giants seek an offensive upgrade. Their second basemen ranked last in the National League with five home runs, 14th with 78 runs and 12th with a .707 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging).

I would have to disagree. Even though hudson is a multidimensional infielder, a pretty solid one, but furcal can help us on the offensive side more than hudson. Furcal has lots of speed who can start at the top of the line up by stealing bases and producing more runs. Offense is what we need!

Why would a free agent go to SF, last place is stinks and looking up is uncomfortable.

CC isn't going to the Giants. Makes zero sense to spend all that $$ on pitching when hitting is their main issue. A Hudson/Furcal combo up the middle would be pretty sweet for them, and I see them as the front runner in getting Pat Burrell. The NL West is wide open, good to see the Giants will be active in getting better. My father was a die-hard Giants fan growing up and continued following them when they moved to SF. Whenever they came to Shea, we were there for every game and he and his buddies would make a yearly long weekend trip out there once a summer to see a full series. Hence why I would like to see the Giants be good again.

I do not agree with Carlos, the Giants need more table setters, either Furcal or Hudson. I am not a big Furcal but he can create havoc at the top of the order. I believe our starting pitching can hold up but if we trade Sanchez + ?? for a bat they can go after someone like on Garland, he can be a 5 starter and chew up innings. Another arm in the pen would help. We can say sign CC or Texiera but lets be realistic, there is only so much money to spend. I like the Affeldt signing. You can say what you want about Sabean, but he does not sit still, I would rather him try to make a move than sit around, plus he gives us something to talk about. What do you guys think.

Juan Cruz would be nice for their bullpen. Since moving back to the bullpen full time in 2007, he's put up some good numbers. Watch out, though, I want the Mets to get him too!
Funkman, the only reason you got to the playoffs last season was because of Manny, remember that when you give him $30 million a season for the next 4 years and he begins to have "knee issues" during his 2nd year because he gets sick of LA.

I think Hudson would be a great addition, so would furcal. I am guessing that Hudson would be a little cheaper and is probably a little better defensively. Plus the fact that he's a switch hitter and has nearly identical carrer offensive numbers, and I like Hudson better. With Furcal's speed, he makes a better leadoff hitter, but Hudson is a great #2 and the Giants have enough speed as a team. Either way, this would be a great signing from both an offensive and defensive perspective, and would help the team win a few more games. Now if we could just get a power bat in the middle of that lineup...

Burris is and will be a good player for a long time. Has anyone seen him in the AZ Fall League? .376 in 24 games, that does not suck to me.

I think the O Dawg would be a great fit for the Giants, and they should be able to pay him and a couple of other guys. I think he and Aaron Rowand would be great leaders on and off the field for a young team stacked with great starting pitching.
I’m not as big a fan of Rafael Furcal. He does have all the tools, but I’ve watched him a lot when he was a Brave and this year as a Dodger, and I’ve yet to see him put it together in the clutch. It is were my $$$, I’d pass. I think there are better and cheaper options at SS, and I’m far from throwing in the towel on Burriss.
CC Sabathia to the Giants is an interesting discussion I think. I’ve heard baseball experts say that major league teams don’t feign interest in free agents simply to drive up their price on other teams, but I think that’s exactly what the Giants are doing to the Dodgers. And while it may be dastardly, I think it is equally smart. Sabathia doesn’t make much sense in the Giants’ rotation. They’ve already got five starters, now that Noah Lowry will be back and all but Matt Cain (2 years remaining on his contract) have between 3 and 5 years remaining under the Giants’ control. Zito has an un-tradable contract, and the other four will make less than $10 million combined in 2009. So, who gets traded? Matt Cain gets the most attention, and is the most rumored, but if you trade Cain to make room for Sabathia, you have a starting rotation with 4 lefties and Lincecum. I just don’t see it. And you’ve added $16-$22 million to a payroll that could be better used adding some offensive talent. BUT, absent the Giants’ offer for CC, his lone offer on the west coast in the NL is the Dodgers, who are trying to use his affinity for the west coast to underpay vs. competing offers in Milwaukee and New York. An offer from the Giants for CC could cause the Dodgers to increase their offer by $20+ million in order to compete with that of the Yankees. That’s $4+ million a year that the Dodgers won’t have to spend filling out their roster.

How could he STAY with "your Dodgers" if he was on the Diamondbacks last year?
Anyway, I think O Dawg would be a great signing for the Giants. He's a fantastic defensive player, and he's a good hitter for his position. The added benefit of signing him (instead of Furcal) would be that Burress could play his natural position which would make things a lot easier on him.

I am a big Giant fan, but live up here in the northeast, does this mean the Giants are giving up on Velez, he seem to come on during the last half of the season, but not seeing him I don't know much about his defense.

Better Hudson than Furcal in my humble estimation. Furcal's got a bad back and they don't usually get better...
We have enough starting pitching but once again need bullpen help. Affeldt is a good start but more is needed. I don't think I can stand watching another endless procession of batters toss their bats towards the dugout and take that free trip to first our bullpen was so kind to give out last year.
By the way, we did have the fewest homers in majors last year. Don't you think we ought to be discussing home run threats?
