The San Francisco Giants' pursuit of free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, previously considered casual, is apparently serious. Two industry sources said on Thursday that the Giants have reaffirmed their interest in Hudson, who is widely regarded as the leading free agent available at his position according to MLB.com.
No deal is imminent, as is the case with the other free agents atop the Giants' shopping list, including left-hander CC Sabathia, shortstops Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria and, possibly, right-hander Juan Cruz. But the Giants' signing on Monday of left-hander Jeremy Affeldt — the first free agent to come to terms — demonstrated the club's intent to seek talent aggressively this offseason.
Hudson, who turns 31 on Dec. 12, is among the Majors' most multidimensional infielders. The three-time Gold Glove winner hit a career-high .305 last season with eight home runs, 41 RBIs and a .367 on-base percentage for the Arizona Diamondbacks. A switch-hitter, Hudson owns a lifetime .282 average.
Hudson plays one of several positions where the Giants seek an offensive upgrade. Their second basemen ranked last in the National League with five home runs, 14th with 78 runs and 12th with a .707 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging).

Funkman, the only reason you got to the playoffs last season was because of Manny, remember that when you give him $30 million a season for the next 4 years and he begins to have "knee issues" during his 2nd year because he gets sick of LA.

31 is not old. He shows no signs of wearing down. Jeez the though process of some of these people is very alarming.

Im not as big a fan of Rafael Furcal. He does have all the tools, but Ive watched him a lot when he was a Brave and this year as a Dodger, and Ive yet to see him put it together in the clutch. It is were my $$$, Id pass. I think there are better and cheaper options at SS, and Im far from throwing in the towel on Burriss.
CC Sabathia to the Giants is an interesting discussion I think. Ive heard baseball experts say that major league teams dont feign interest in free agents simply to drive up their price on other teams, but I think thats exactly what the Giants are doing to the Dodgers. And while it may be dastardly, I think it is equally smart. Sabathia doesnt make much sense in the Giants rotation. Theyve already got five starters, now that Noah Lowry will be back and all but Matt Cain (2 years remaining on his contract) have between 3 and 5 years remaining under the Giants control. Zito has an un-tradable contract, and the other four will make less than $10 million combined in 2009. So, who gets traded? Matt Cain gets the most attention, and is the most rumored, but if you trade Cain to make room for Sabathia, you have a starting rotation with 4 lefties and Lincecum. I just dont see it. And youve added $16-$22 million to a payroll that could be better used adding some offensive talent. BUT, absent the Giants offer for CC, his lone offer on the west coast in the NL is the Dodgers, who are trying to use his affinity for the west coast to underpay vs. competing offers in Milwaukee and New York. An offer from the Giants for CC could cause the Dodgers to increase their offer by $20+ million in order to compete with that of the Yankees. Thats $4+ million a year that the Dodgers wont have to spend filling out their roster.

Anyway, I think O Dawg would be a great signing for the Giants. He's a fantastic defensive player, and he's a good hitter for his position. The added benefit of signing him (instead of Furcal) would be that Burress could play his natural position which would make things a lot easier on him.

We have enough starting pitching but once again need bullpen help. Affeldt is a good start but more is needed. I don't think I can stand watching another endless procession of batters toss their bats towards the dugout and take that free trip to first our bullpen was so kind to give out last year.
By the way, we did have the fewest homers in majors last year. Don't you think we ought to be discussing home run threats?
