Just how badly does CC Sabathia want to pitch at home in California? We may find out very soon, according to a report in the New York Daily News. Sources say the San Francisco Giants are considering a play for Sabathia, although their only hope of landing the big lefthander would be for him to take an extreme hometown discount.

According to sources, the Giants are contemplating an offer of more than the $100 million the Brewers have bid for Sabathia for five years, but far less than the six years and $140 million the Yankees have offered.

Sabathia hails from Vallejo, Calif., roughly 30 miles outside of San Francisco.

Despite recent reports that the Angels had decided to move on without Mark Teixeira and make a hard charge at Sabathia, Los Angeles GM Tony Reagins told MLB.com that "there was nothing to" those stories, adding that Teixeira remains the club's top priority.

The Yankees and Brewers remain the only teams with concrete offers on the table for Sabathia. The winter meetings begin Monday in Las Vegas, where things should start shaking out with many of the big name free agents.

wow. lets not forget wat happened hte last time the giants gave a big name pitcher a lot of money. heres to hopin zito dont have another season like last year but to get c.c. ur look at a rotation of lincecum, C.C., cain and zito? with zito in top form this could be a dark horse rotation in baseball. i cant see the giants going anywhere but up. no excuses this is a rotation to easily take the NL Werst Crown. No typo there. the NL west = weakest and most pathetic division in all of baseball.

i am suprised that the giants would be so willing to give a crap load of money to another front line pitcher. i know it's hard to overlook cc's numbers but with the way zito turned out you never know. shows just how willing that front office is to win ball games

Why doeseveryone assume that because Zito was a bust, that all future deals for starting pitchers will be the same. Its not only Zito , its brought up every time a team has a bad signning. In other words if you make one bad deal it is not saying that all other deals will turn out the same. Teams like the NYY make more deals so its personified but each deal is not connected with the previous or latter.

GOOD! Get him off the market so the Yankee fans can start making excuses about why he didn't want to come to their crappy team.

This seems baseless to me unless the Giants were to trade either or both Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. They've got three more years of Cain and at least four of Sanchez, both at below markt value. Why would they give up on these guys to pay a boatload for CC when they're not even half-way through being punished for paying a boatload for Zito. And, the Giants LOWERED ticket prices for 2009.
This is like the Cubs getting Jake Peavy. They don't need him, and until it happens, I'm a non-believer. Sorry.

    Hey Stewie,
Forget Sabathia. Sign Texeria, Burnett, Sheets or Lowe. Give Andy $13M and get the season started. It looks as though Peavy will be going to the Cubs after all. 3 team deal with Baltimore in there.

If the Giants sign Sabathia, they won;t be able to sign free agents for a while. Does Sabathia really want to wind up like A-rod, stuck on cash strapped Texas Rangers team?

Hi Dav, Exactly what I ve been saying for the past few weeks. its obvious that CC is waiting for another offer that suits him. nd rightly so. It seems that the Yanks are the only ones not seein g the handwriting on the wall, and moving to plan B. It bolsters some of the posters who state the Yanks think $$$$$$ solve everything. In this case they are right.

Just curious...what has A-Rod amounted to as a Yankee that he didn't as a Ranger?
Other than the obvious loathing from his own "fans."
Stay out of NY C.C. You'll be filthy rich, but if you have one bad trip to the post-season these fans will turn on you so fast it'll make your head spin.

If the Giants were to get CC, they would have a young, sick rotation. Even though they have close to ZERO bats, pitching will get them to the playoffs. Look at what the Astros did in 2005. They had a combined batting avg of .256, OBP of .322, and 161 HR's. Thats AWFUL! However, with a starting 3 rotation of Oswalt, Pettitte, Clemens, a 42 saver in Lidge, and a solid bullpen, they had a team ERA of 3.51. Thats crazy good for a team with no offensive power.

I agree Phils. Only was this would happen would be if the Giants had a deal in place to trade for Prince or a big bat like his, and it would definitly cost them one of their young pitchers. I don't see it happening, the Giants need to focus their attention and $$ on offense since they certainly having good pitching in the rotation and bullpen. I'm more and more becoming convinced CC will sign with the Angels.

The Giants have been the constant undercurrent in the CC saga since the day he didn't grab the Yankees' money and run. It won't surprise me if he does sign with them. His wife wants him to for crying out loud. Tim wants him to, and Muad'dib will be denied. And the Giants have plenty of money, they just never spent very much of it until Zito. And even with Zito, they could afford CC and a second-level bat like Burrell or Dunn. Probably Burrell, if the rumor he too has "hometown longings" is true.

Zito as a number 1 could not handle it ..... as a number 3 or 4 and with someone else getting paid as much, he will win 12-15 games, remember when he won the cy in Oakland he was #3 starter.

Davfied: According to S.D newspapers, SS Greene will go to St. Louis, dumping his 6 mil. salary, and Peavy stays a Padre. I like Greene, he's an under rated SS, but the Cubs won't get Peavy. Not soon, anyway.

Wow, that would make two $100 million pitchers on the Giants roster. And Lincecum & Cain won't be cheap either when they get to their arbitration/FA years.
Funny thing is, if this was the Yankees who have two $100 million pitchers, people will be all over them about payroll and buying championships. But since it's the Giants, nobody seems to care.
