The plot thickened slightly Friday in the San Francisco Giants' search for a free-agent infielder, as Jeff Lane, the representative for shortstop Edgar Renteria, said that club management and his client have exchanged contract proposals.
"We're actively negotiating, no doubt about it," Lane said.
Whether a decision will come quickly is debatable. Renteria is being courted by about six teams, at least a few of which might be the same ones eyeing shortstop Rafael Furcal. Renteria probably won't sign until Furcal, a higher-profile free agent, does so first. Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, said Friday that they continued to evaluate the offers they've received. Furcal's suitors include the Giants, A's, Braves, Orioles, Cubs, Dodgers and possibly the Cardinals.
The Giants also have expressed interest in Orlando Hudson, the top second baseman available in free agency, although insiders believe that they have not tendered him an offer.
Renteria, 33, hit .270 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs in 138 games last season with Detroit. Although his average was his lowest since 2001, when he hit .260 with St. Louis, Renteria is just a year removed from batting .332 with Atlanta in 2007. Aware that critics have claimed he has lost a step defensively, Renteria is said to have been working out diligently.

I agree with signing an older indielder when they have some younger kids, but completely disagree about CC. Signing CC gives them a lot of trade options. With him, they don't have to be afraid of trading one of their pitchers, and not having a known quality starter to replace them. Sanchez, Lowry, and Cain can all be traded after that IMO. The CC signing wouldn't be something to stop at, it would allow them to do things they wouldn't even consider.
As for Renteria, he is too old. Furcal is the better choice in my opinion. Though why they keep going after the wrong position is beyond me. And don't give up on Sabean yet. Let's see what happens this year. He made some excellent moves throughout the years, and just recently made a couple bad ones. He wasn't put in a great position with having Bonds on the team, and trying to get him a ring. I think we need to look at the whole picture of what he had to deal with. As for Zito, I think he will turn the corner. May not be as good as he once was, but I see him having a better record than last year, which I think was not a good indicator of how he pitched.

Aurilla: Games 140 At Bats 407 Average .277 Home Runs 10 RBIs 52
Renteria: Games 138 At Bats 503 Average .270 Home Runs 10 RBIs 55
and Aurilla would work for a lot less money, money that could be used to goi after Texeria

C.C. might make sense in that it opens up the possibility of trading pitching for hitting. But can the Giants afford to pay the hitter they get if they have two $100 million dollar contracts out to pitchers plus Lincecum's inevitable payday? Zito's contract handicaps the team for years to come. Not to mention that C.C. has thrown over 500 inning the last two years (including playoffs) which is a red flag when considering such a big contract.

Sign CC. Package Cain and Zito (to off-set each other's contracts and performance value) with Molina, for Fielder and Hardy. With Zito and Molina's contract off the books, sign Lowe, Burrell and a quality reliever.
And now... your "Highly Unlikely" 2009 San Francisco Giants:
Starting Lineup
1. Randy Winn - RF
2. J.J. Hardy -SS
3. Prince Fielder -1B (.444, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .724 SLG, 1.204 OPS in 27 AB at AT&T Park)
4. Pat Burrell - LF (.312, 5 HR, 18 RBI, .538 SLG, 1.010 OPS in 93 AB at AT&T)
5. Aaron Rowand - CF
6. Pablo Sandoval - C
7. Emmanuel Burriss - 2B
8. Kevin Fransden - 3B
Rotation
1. Tim Lincecum
2. C.C. Sabathia
3. Derek Lowe (4-1, 2.02, 1.07 WHIP, .232 BAA lifetime at AT&T)
4. Noah Lowry
5. Jonathan Sanchez (with potentail "passing of the torch" to Bumgarner or Alderson
Off the bench
Fred Lewis - OF
Nate Shierholtz - OF
Dave Roberts - OF (I have a feeling that his contract will be a hard one to deal)
Eugenio Velez - INF
Ivan Ochoa - INF
Travis Ishikawa - 1B
Steve Holm - C
Now that I've had my little daydream, please feel free to chew it to bits!
Oh, yeah. Average age when 2009 season opens: Lineup 24 years-old, Rotation 28.

Zito, Cain and Molina....for....Fielder and Hardy? That trade makes SO little sense and the Brewers could get a much better return for Fielder ALONE. The contracts the Brewers would be taken on would way offset the contracts they'd be letting go. Sorry, I know it is a day-dream moment, but you cant throw out a deal like that and expect it to be taken even remotely serious.

I don't like the Giants going after these older veterans who are prone with injuries. My main beef with Sabean is that he does not address the holes and weakness directly. He seems to like to stock pile on positions that we don't need and using it as pawning chips. The only thing is, it hasn't work these last couple of years. I want Sabean to attack our weakness directly instead of beating around the bush. I like CC Sabathia, but like all expert opinions said, he was over-used last season as a rental player. I would highly doubt he will have the same success this season as he did after the trading deadline. Nor do I think he will be able to pitch that same number of innings before being injured. It really does not make any sense to invest so much money in one guy and not addressing their weakness directly. They need to go after Texiera, or other big bats like Manny. That makes more sense to invest money on a guy who will be playing almost every day. We need offense!!!
If we did go after anyone that was mentioned before, I wouldn't mind them going after Orlando Hudson. Someone young and not already peaked and going down hill. If they do get these veterans, I would rather they get a discount because I don't think they're worth face value. We've been through that period where we went after old used goods before. We need some fresh, young talent.
