On one hand, the one that wears the rings, the Red Sox want to be like the New York Yankees. On the other hand, do the Sox really want to be like the Yankees? Winning at the risk of depleting young talent?

Boston.com said there are mixed emotions regarding the pursuit of Minnesota Twins lefty Johan Santana. Theo Epstein and Co. enjoy watching the kids develop and win. Going out and signing Santana makes them more like the Yankees.

There might be a greater willingness, at least on the part of some on the baseball ops side, to let Jacoby Ellsbury go in a Santana deal, and hold onto Lester, the belief being that 1) Ellsbury's value will never be higher and 2) Lester may have a higher upside than he's given credit for. At the same time, the Sox are well aware of the attachment many fans already have developed to Ellsbury. On the other hand, how do you pass up the chance to acquire Santana, a pitcher as special as Pedro Martinez was a decade ago?

It hardly matters who Boston has to give up in the trade, they get Johan Santana, who in my opinion is the the best pitcher in baseball. Once again the small market team like the Twins get "shafted".

I hate when teams trade the farm AND have to pay the new person as a FA. It seems VERY silly to me.

the sox are going to be good for a few years, like the yankees in the late 90's, and then they're going to go at least 10 years without a title.

Sure you can compare the two teams. The Red Sox are are more and more like the Yankees every season. The only people that refuse to believe it are the people in Boston because they like to spend all their time complaining about the Yankees. Well, guess what Boston, you are like the Yankees and every other team complains about you just like NY. You are the same no matter how you try to spin it.

You play the game to win the championship. You win a championship with the best talent you can get. Last I heard, they don't give you a trophy for having the best young prospects.

absurd article. they write the sox will export kids to win now. what is santana old? the guy will be 29 opening day. he is young. he has 5 solid years at least. he is a cornerstone. if he were 33-34 i would say yes, but at 29 he is in his prime and i dont think the sox will give up a ton for him.

This move would not make the Red Sox like the Yankees since the Yankees try to acquire 38 year old players who are past their prime. Santana is in his prime. As long as the Sox don't give up too much it is a good move. I hate to see Ellsbury go because I feel like the Red Sox need him at centrefield more than they need a starting pitcher unless Crisp decides to start hitting like he did in Cleveland).

Keep crying Boston fans, but if you trade Santana (especially for the rumored 5 player deal) and then have to go out and pay him 140 mil for 6 years, you have stooped to the level of the Yankees for a win at all costs mentality. Keep trying to point to ARod's salary, but when the dust settles next year, your payroll will be rapidly approaching that of the Yankees, despite having incredibly less revenue to work with. Don't sweat it though, the Mets, the Angels, and apparently the Tigers have all adopted this strategy.

I think the Sox should back out of the Santana talks, too. They went out last year to sign (and outbid all other teams) a phenom out of Japan. That's enough already. They have a solid rotation and decent but aging offense. They should be looking to improve their depth in the relief role and groom some of these young players in their organization so they are ready to take the field full-time by the time 2009-10 roles around. Give Lester and Bucholtz the innings they need, sign a 4th starter if they absolutely NEED to (Carlos Silva??).

Untill the Sox get Santana then they are not like the Yankees. Sox do NOT have one player that makes 20 MIl. Manny is the highest paid at 17Mil. Yankees have 3 players that make over 20Mil.

The Evil Empire is what the Sox have been modeling themselves after for a while now...they even had less home grown talent on the squad than even the Yankees did, look it up. It's not so bad is it? I mean 2 WS rings in 4 years.

And who is responsible for starting this deadly competition? Why is the Evil Empire called evil? This talk about the Red Sox becoming the new Yankees is ridiculous. George forced the Red Sox to pull out the stops in order to compete with his money and to reward their loyal and loving fans. I know the movie Fever Pitch gets a bad rap in some circles, but it says it all. Listen to the lyrics in the music, especially as they roll the credits.
Having said all of that, I still hope they hang on to Ellsbury. I would hate to see Lester go, but I see Ellsbury as having a greater upside. Go Sox!

Ellsbury played above average during his callup ( look at his numbers for chris's sake ) Lester used to be someone I worried about as a Yankee fan. If the Twins make the deal with Boston for Lester, Crisp, and some other chumps (without Ellsbury) that do not have proven big league talent, they're morons. Melky is a great centerfielder, Hughes is better than any of the Boston prospects. ( Don't forget Clay Buchholz pitched his no hitter against a Baltimore team that had lost like 9 in a row at that time) If the Yankees let Santana go to the Sox, seriously, Cashman needs to be fired.

The Twins would do well to keep Santana rather than accept the Sox' offer at least till the trading deadline. The Sox' offer doesn't even nip the heels of the Yankees offer at least whats been reported to be offers so far. No Bucholz in the offer means no deal for me if I'm the Twins. John Lester is a back of the rotation starter at best and would be exposed by not having 5 run leads to work with. Wait till the trading deadline and you'll have many more suitors...desperate times call for desperate measures and many teams will fit that description at the trading deadline.
