MLB - Sports Rumors

“MannyThe Cleveland Indians want to get over its losing ways so it has shown interest in bringing former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta, who has a 132-198 managerial record, onboard to take over the manager's spot. Well, at least he got an interview in the process to replace Eric Wedge.

He apparently had a phone conversation with Indians GM Mark Shapiro earlier this week. He'll talk to the Houston Astros tomorrow about their open managerial slot as well. "I'm excited and honored to be part of this process," Acta told the paper. He says he thinks will be "very exciting in Cleveland very soon."

Guess once you're a manager somewhere, you're automatically on the list everywhere else.

Seriously? Manny Acta? Why would he even be on anyone's list? I can see this is going to be a really bad off-season.

Manny Acta will be a terrific coach in the right organization. He was given a team with no pitching, no experienced catcher and young, inexperienced and mostly flawed players all across the board. Manny has a terrific temperment and knowledge of the game for a veteran team. John McGraw, Connie Mack and Casey Stengle rolled into one couldn't have gotten much more from the Nationals this season.

Davey Johnson and Buck Showalter? eek
Showalter WAS with the Indians not too long ago in the front office.....and talked Shapiro into giving Dellucci a 3rd year on his deal......
He's not the manager for this team.
To be honest, I'd rather have Acta than those two mentioned. I doubt it will be Acta though. Tribe conducted as many as 15 phone interviews. If he gets a sitdown interview, THEN you can start talking about it (as only 3-5 guys will get those).
I'm just glad John Farrell doesn't want to come to Cleveland...Thank God. Terrible managerial candidate imo.

    Forgot to mention Donnie Baseball...
    1. Don Mattingly 2. Brad Mills 3. Manny Acta ....
I would think bringing in Jaramillo would be a priority as well...
Would also like to see Fryman move up and bringing in Sandy Alomar and Omar in some type of coaching capacity...
If we go with Lovullo or whoever that scrub is in AAA it will be hard to get behind this team...
    P.S.
    I hate you Dolan...!!!

Acta, Showalter, Valentine...all journeymen managers...mediocre at best...like his players. Get a clue Shapiro. Your decision making is getting worse. Trade away three superstars in two years for prospects. These are the players you build around so you come up with the money. We were one game away from a probable World Championship a couple years ago and now look. Sad, sad, sad.

I don't think Acta is who I would want to see as manager but give the guy a break, the Nationals weren't going to win with anyone else at manager with the club they have.

Hopefully Cleveland will get to him before Houston. Maybe then the Astros will get someone who can fire this team up. BTW they say Phil Garner is on the Astros list,

Everyone looks at the statistics and losing record of the Nationals and figures that Acta was to blame. If Acta was the Yankees manager and they won 100 games, everyone would be frothing at the mouth to have him in Cleveland. Wins and losses mean nothing, when a team doesn't have the talent to compete. Cleveland already have a strong nucleus of players that have shown promise in 09. With a manager that can relate to the players and consistantly gets the best out of what he has to work with, that is the manager the fans should be embracing, not despising him because he had nothing to work with. I followed the Washington team this year and they were in almost every game they played, but fell short, ending in another loss. Why, because they were missing key ingredients that would have ensured success. A manager is only as good as the players make him on the field. Cleveland have the same nucleus of young players and combined with a few veterans that can mould them into major leaguers, Acta could be the missing ingredient that brings them together and they win. They have a young pitching staff, LaPorta, Brantley, Marte, Sizemore, Cabrera, a closer in Wood and let a manager that has dealt with rookies guide them in 2010.
Just because a manager can take a team of veterans or all stars to the playoffs, doesn't mean he can direct 20 year olds to the same record. Managers will call the same game from the dugout and it comes down to the players if he is seen as a genius or idiot on the bench. If Acta fails and the team finishes last again in 2010, then judge him as a failure and he needs replaced. Cleveland isn't Washington, where no name rookies were the lineup every night. They have players that can win it all, if the right manager knows how to use them to his advantage. If Acta can have rookies overachieving every game all year, even though they lose, he can do the same with a lineup that was picked to finish first this year and perhaps succeed in accomplishing that goal.

Agree 100%. I also followed the Nats for the past couple of seasons...Acta had nothing to work with, no pitching yet they were an exciting team to wathc even though they lost. The Indians were probably the most boring, lazy, and unmotivated stupid team to watch, If Acta had the same quality players as Dumba$$ had in Cleve last season he'd be the manager of the year.
