Pitching and catching remain the biggest needs for the Baltimore Orioles, but there are some questions to be answered at first base as well according to the Baltimore Sun.
The club could install Aubrey Huff, who started 23 games at first last year, as the team's everyday first baseman. They also have had trade discussions to fill the vacancy, with the Texas Rangers' Hank Blalock among their targets. Kevin Millar, their everyday first baseman last season, Eric Hinske, Doug Mientkiewicz and Sean Casey are among the free-agent options.
Slugger Adam Dunn, who has hit 40 or more home runs for five straight seasons, is also a free-agent option, though his price would probably have to come down significantly for the Orioles to get involved in the bidding.
"We did not allow this to sidetrack our other endeavors," MacPhail said. "We're focusing on our pitching and catching primarily at this point."

I will no longer follow baseball unless they create a new system or salary cap that helps the teams who can't spend 300 million dollars annually.

Maybe the Orioles should stop complaining about payroll and try to remove their idiot of an owner.

This is a stupid comment because:
A) The Brewers have made it exactly how many times in the past decade?
B) The Rays have made it exactly how many times in the past decade?
C) The Marlins have made the playoffs exactly how many times in the past decade?
C) The Rockies play in the worst division in professional sports.
D) The Padres play in the worst division in professional sports.
E) None of the teams you listed won the Series in the last decade other than the Marlins.
E) The Marlins won a World Series in the 90's with a team comprised solely of big money free agents.
F) An owner cannot be removed.
Us Oriole fans have to compete with two of the richest franchises in all of professional sports in a league with no salary cap. We have an owner who is cheap, doesn't really care about winning, and you suggest we stop complaining? We have the most beautiful facility in baseball but we haven't had an above .500 team field it in 10 years. Stop complaining? How bout you get out of the gene pool buddy.

The Rays have had lots of promising talent for years, but not enough of it was in the pitching dept. And they have a confidence now that helps a lot. Like the Brewers, expect them to stick around now that they have pulled a good team together. Just took em forever and a day, but they did it. If the Orioles have sucked so badly, they would have had a lot of top picks in the draft like the Rays had. What did they do with them?
Do you not remember when Josh Beckett led the Marlins to a World Series win over the Yankees just a few years ago? This was not a team of big money free agents. Some of that team got traded away because they were going to become big money free agents though, but they were up and coming talent at the time. Beckett had started out with Florida. The big money they had spent for that year was on Pudge. It's all about the smart pieces you put together for your team.
Let's see, Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in 01 with a team that belonged in a nursing home. They basically just had Schilling and Johnson and a whole lot of not giving up on that team. The only real threat at the plate was Luis Gonzales. Most of that team has retired by now. There are many ways to put a winning team together. It always starts with smart decisions.
It's not always about payroll. You CAN spend super big bucks and come away with a winning team, but it's not because of the amount you spend. It's how you spent it. ARod hasn't been much help in winning a World Series title for the Yankees, has he? Tex was with the Angels last season and they didn't do so well in the playoffs, did they? Manny helped LA quite a bit, but I don't see any World Series rings for the Dodgers any time soon.
But, I think there should be a salary cap for teams. I don't like watching the Yankees swoop in and grab away the best players right out of negotiations with other teams because they are willing to break the bank for whatever they want. But it doesn't buy them championships. They didn't even make the playoffs last year, and they haven't won the World Series since the 20th century.
The money they spend is ugly, but it doesn't get them anywhere. The Orioles don't need to spend money in large amounts, they need to spend what they need to spend in order to make SMARTER decisions. They don't know how to win anymore. They need to trade away their mediocrity for promising young prospects and just lose for a couple more years while those prospects develop. Then they can just spend some money to fill in whatever holes they have. That is what is happening with Oakland, Minnesota, the Brewers, Rays, and what some teams are working on for the future like the Pirates and Rangers who aren't there yet. It is turning out to be a successful model for many teams.
The first money the Orioles should spend is on a new GM and scouting staff.

With regards to the Brewers...I was thrilled for them, but they will not be a factor after losing CC and Ben Sheets. The Cubs keep spending and the Brewers can't keep up. They did have a great 1 year run.
The Rays are in great shape moving forward because of all the young pitching. However, they have been the worst team in baseball throughout their existence...hardly a model any good GM would recommend following.
The Marlins (the more recent version) are the only example of a team winning with a low budget.
Your comments about Arizona make no sense whatsoever. What does the age of the players have to do with your argument? It is about budget and competing...the fact that they had older players means nothing. They spent a good deal of cash on the "nursing home" players. I also love the quote "They basically had Schilling and Johnson and a whole lot of not giving up on that team". Wow...only Schilling and Johnson at their peaks?!? Everyone knows in the playoffs pitching wins. They had arguably the 2 best pitchers on that team. I won't even get into the notion of "players that would not give up"...just a stupid argument.
No one debates that you need to make smart decisions but what you have really missed is that teams with big payrolls can get away with making lots of bad decisions and still win. Small market teams have to be right or they will be financially crippled by one bad decision. Arod reinforces this point. Sure, Arod has not brought a championship to either the Rangers or the Yanks. However, the Rangers were handcuffed by his contract and the Yankees clearly are not and they can just keep spending.
It may not gurantee a championship but last time I checked, the Yankees were in the playoffs every year until this past year. So at the very least, it greatly improves your odds.
We agree that there should be a salary cap, but it will never happen in baseball. This is one of the main reasons why the NFL has surpassed MLB in popularity. How many cities in the NFL go into the season knowing they have zero chance of making the playoffs? I would guess at least a third of MLB teams have no chance of making the playofffs each year (and I am probably being conservative).
Lastly, regarding the Orioles, you either know nothing about the team or are not very bright. Why on earth would they bring in a new GM and scouting staff? They pulled off one of the most lopsided trades in history last year (check the Bedard trade) and have rebuilt their farm system from one of the worst to a top 10-12 system. Under AM they have drafted very well, including the best position prospect in all of the minors...maybe you haven't heard of Matt Weiters.
You should stick to a topic you know more about next time...if there is one.

I don't know what the answer is. AM seems to be a good GM. However, we are so far behind the others in our division that it seems as though we can never catch up, except for maybe a lucky year every couple of decades. Yes we have a couple of good players ( BR, NM, AJ) but they'll be gone as free agents as soon as they can. Same goes for Wieters( note he has never played a MLB game yet- he could be a complete bust). Our pitching prospects are promising but so were Loewen, Penn, Olson, etc.
What possible reason is there for any sane person to spend $30-40 per person to go to an O's game? To see some has-been pitch?
