Former New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly really, really wants to be a manager in the big leagues, but he apparently doesn't want to do it for the Washington Nationals. Rumor has it that Mattingly turned down an offer to interview with the team and help turn it around, according to MLB.com.
There is apparently some belief that this indicates that Mattingly and his current employer, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are formalizing some kind of plan for hitting coach Mattingly to take over for Joe Torre when Torre finally decides to call it quits.
Meanwhile, the Nats apparently want to name a new manager within the week. Interim manager Jim Riggleman is a possibility as well as former Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin.
Whatever happens, the coaches have all been promised jobs within the organization for next year.

I do think Mattingly knows his stuff.....but what has he ever done to show he can manage a club?
He's never been a manager at any level (unless he managed his kid's little league team and I'm unaware). He's always had Joe Torre running things.
I'd be VERY hesitant to give him a ML managerial job right now......and I'm sure this played into the Yankees thinking when they did not hire him.

As a Phillies' fan, I'm always happy to see Joe Torre over in the other dugout. Mattingly might be his own man, as Larry Bowa (also a Torre coach) is, and if I'm the Dodgers, I certainly want to confirm that before handing him the managerial job in 2011.

He made that team gel from day 1.
Good job Joe,
Good luck Donnie

I think this year's Yankee team has played with more heart, spirit, joy, and played more as a team than any recent Yankee team in memory. That's a testament to Joe Girardi's managerial skill.
I also think the Nationals are much closer to being competitive than almost everyone thinks. And going after Mattingly, to me, demonstrates yet another commitment to win on the part of team ownership.
I just think Mattingly has been told that he'll be the manager of the Dodgers in 2011 after Torre retires, and he's not going anywhere for anything.

I could see it now.....Fantasy Island episode starring Davcried. remember how the guests came off the plane when they got to the island and how Mr. Rourke would tell Tattoo ( "the plane, the plane!") what each guest is there for? here goes my version of Davcried stepping off the plane all dressed in Yankee gear, panties included:
TATTOO: "Boss who is that guy dressed up like a Jankee little leaguer?"
MR. ROURKE: "Oh, that there is Mr. Davcried, he is here to fullfill all his dreams as a child. He never got to play on any of the teams he joined. always being the last kid picked in the playground. his self esteem is very low presently and he is very sick in the head and his liver is giving out on him."
TATTOO: " gee Boss...that is horrible. what are we gonna do for him?"
MR. ROURKE: " well Tattoo...I have arranged for all his childhood playmates who teased him all his life to come to Fantasy Island and have a weekend of baseball games, reminiscing about old times. I even had our crew construct a mini replica of Jankee Stadium on the East end of the island. His old friends have been paid to pick him first, let him play any position he wants and let him win."
TATTOO: "gee boss....i didn't know a grown man needed such pats on the ass to feel good. I dont get it Boss?"
MR. ROURKE: " well Tattoo. thats why he is here. to pat his ass and make him feel good."
TATTOO: "ohhhhhhh i get it Boss. can i dress up in a Jankee uniform and be the batboy for his team?"
MR. ROURKE: "lol...maybe Tattoo, but that is part of his fantasy. to be batboy of the Jankees and I have arranged for the 1977 Jankee team to come play a game so he can fullfill his fantasy."
TATTOO: "gee Boss....you are great. i sure hope he leaves here happy."
MR. ROURKE: "oh yeah Tattoo....i have also constructed a Hooter's right next to the stadium for after game parties where all his friends can join him. Hooters is his fav palce to be at of all time. and you will be the manager my friend!"
TATTOO: "oh gee Boss! thanks!" (Tattoo gets a chubby!)
(mister rourke clears his throat)
MR. ROURKE : "my dear guests... I am your host Mr Rourke.....welcome to Fantasy Island!"
Dav then cums on himself and proceeds to live out his fantasy.
THE END!
TOP THAT YOU FUGGIN PUTO MAMON!
