Donnie ball belongs in New York but there is no doubt in my mind that he'd take over for Torre if he's offered the job. He was very hurt when he was passed over for the job in New York and it's going to take some serious ass kissing to get him back.

Word of advice Mattingly....go to AAA first and actually get some managerial experience. It's help you out.
I do think Mattingly knows his stuff.....but what has he ever done to show he can manage a club?
He's never been a manager at any level (unless he managed his kid's little league team and I'm unaware). He's always had Joe Torre running things.
I'd be VERY hesitant to give him a ML managerial job right now......and I'm sure this played into the Yankees thinking when they did not hire him.

He can't do any worse than Torre.

BUt just give it some time.....he most likely will end up back there in the future. But right now.....he is bleeding DODGER BLUE! LMAO...that outta get some of u riled up.

Tony, sorry, Mattingly was not offended at all and has said so many, many times. He went with Torre, it was the right move for him at the time and he knew it. Panch, the only color Donnie is bleeding is green. Money talks, he's making more now then he did as a player.

Of course that what he said publicly. He's a first class guy now and always was but deep down you know it killed him when he was passed over for Joe G. Bottom line is that if he is offered the Dodgers job he'll take it. Most likely Torre is done in another year or two at the most. The Yankees won't be looking for another manager for quite a while and Mattingly will be managing in L.A. for a long, long time if he has any success at all.

If I were the Dodgers, I'd be afraid to hire Mattingly if he's learning from Joe Torre. I think Torre has done less with more the last nine years than any manager in baseball history. At least with the Yankees, he could hang his hat on the Championships in the late 90s and 2000. But even the Yankees realized over time that his contributions were over-stated and over-valued. It's the same thing in LA. That Dodgers' fans haven't yet picked up on this is really surprising.
As a Phillies' fan, I'm always happy to see Joe Torre over in the other dugout. Mattingly might be his own man, as Larry Bowa (also a Torre coach) is, and if I'm the Dodgers, I certainly want to confirm that before handing him the managerial job in 2011.

Donnie shouldn't be turning down interviews, It's a recession! He has no executive experience, Girardi got the job because he did so much with one of the smallest payrolls in the league when he was with Florida, and if you think he doesn't have anything to do with the attitude and winning adjustment this year, you are a dummy.
He made that team gel from day 1.

Brian D: Great post and right on. I think the job Girardi has done managing the Yankees this whole season has been fabulous. The Yankees added three enormous contracts over the season, and at least two (Burnett and Teixeira) enormous egos to a team already full of divergent personalities and massive egos. Then they started the year with all the A-Rod steroid mess. That might have torn a lot of teams apart. Girardi navigated that disaster and molded a team with the skill of a seasoned veteran manager.
I think this year's Yankee team has played with more heart, spirit, joy, and played more as a team than any recent Yankee team in memory. That's a testament to Joe Girardi's managerial skill.
I also think the Nationals are much closer to being competitive than almost everyone thinks. And going after Mattingly, to me, demonstrates yet another commitment to win on the part of team ownership.
I just think Mattingly has been told that he'll be the manager of the Dodgers in 2011 after Torre retires, and he's not going anywhere for anything.

Don Mattingly was my hero growing up..and i am from california..He was my fav player since i was 5 and I have a man crush on him..and like 242 different donnie baseball cards!! So sad! But i dont care!! Come and manage the Giants!!

JD...oh for sure money is key here. but no matter what Don says and its all the right things. you know he felt slighted when they didn't consider him for the Yankee job. cmon man.....you or i work for a company for 20 years or more and you see management bring in someone who was with the company for a 3 years like Girardi was or with the Yankees or some college punk grad...you would be pissed and probably look for another job. this is no different. and in this case Don has too much class to bad mouth his former team. he moved on and it's best that he did. but instead of being happy for the man....the tasteless and classless YankMe fans(wont mention names cuz we all know who they are in here. starts with a D)......all they can say is he belongs here, he is a yankee, blah blah blah.....fugg that! I could see it now.....Fantasy Island episode starring Davcried. remember how the guests came off the plane when they got to the island and how Mr. Rourke would tell Tattoo ( "the plane, the plane!") what each guest is there for? here goes my version of Davcried stepping off the plane all dressed in Yankee gear, panties included:
