It was just another at-bat for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese(notes). He's stepped into the batter's box hundreds of times before, but this time he took a ball right on the left hand from Atlanta Braves pitcher Scott Linebrink(notes). And now he's headed for surgery Tuesday to repair a broken hand and will be out nine to 12 weeks, according to KMOV radio.
Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa called it a "significant break," the station reports.
Freese was hitting .356 with two homers and 14 RBIs, since an ankle injury last year had him missing most of the season.
FOX Sports Midwest reports that Cardinals GM John Mozeliak doesn't think Freese will be back in the lineup till late July.
