The Milwaukee Brewers are losing a humongous bat at first base as free agent Prince Fielder(notes) is looking more and more likely to head elsewhere. But the team has an young, inexpensive replacement for him in Mat Gamel(notes).
The position the team is looking to fill through a free agent signing is shortstop. GM Doug Melvin has spoken to the agent for Jose Reyes(notes), Paul Kinzer, a grand total of once this offseason, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. He also met with Barry Meister, the agent for Clint Barmes(notes), on Wednesday and is set to meet Thursday with the agent for Jimmy Rollins(notes), Dan Lozano, according to the Journal-Sentinel. Of course, the team could just end up re-signing Yuniesky Betancourt(notes).
"I said at the end of the year I'd be satisfied with having 'Yuni' back," said Melvin, the paper reports, though the team didn't pick up the $6 million option that would have sealed that deal at season's end.
