Brewers sour on Hoffman, eye Fuentes

The Milwaukee Brewers were erased from list of teams showing interest in all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman on Wednesday, leaving left-hander Brian Fuentes as the only top free agent closer in the club's sights, according to MLB.com.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin spoke for the second straight day with Rick Thurman, who represents both Fuentes and Hoffman. He planned to call back Thurman in the evening to say that he would not make Hoffman an offer.

Fuentes, though, remains an option. The Cardinals and Tigers are among the teams also interested, with St. Louis manager Tony LaRussa calling Fuentes his team's top target. The Brewers are trying to decide whether they can commit three years to a closer.

Hoffman is done and he can't deliver in the clutch and that goes all the way back to Scott Brosius in 1998.

Thank goodness Melvin didn't spend the farm on Hoffman. He's just about washed up.

Good call on letting Hoffman go, if he were willing to become a cheap middle reliever maybe sign him, but not as a big money closer.

Get a good starter, and then put Jeff ("he eats up a lot of innings") in long relief, plus if he's long relief, it'll be someone else who gave up 5 or 6 runs in the first couple of innings, and it won't matter, then, when Suppan gives up 5 or 6 more....

I've been a Padre fan for many years. Sad to say but Hoffman is through. I yelled at the TV everytime I saw Hoffman being put into close a close game. It's scary every time he goes out to close a game.

Bad guy, it is ridiculous to say that Hoffman's struggles go all the way back to Brosius. In 8 of the past 10 years his era has been below 3.00. Never higher then 3.77. Closers have to deliver in the clutch most of the time they take the mound. Obviously, some saves are eaiser then others. But I can assure you that Pteco produces a lot of one run games.

    The Brewers should pursue Saito.
