Brewers might just keep Mike Cameron

Though the New York Yankees still have some interest in Mike Cameron, the Milwaukee Brewers are more inclined to hang on to their center fielder, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Sunday. GM Doug Melvin told the newspaper that having a good defensive centerfielder is valuable considering the amount of balls that will be put in play after losing strikeout pitchers CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets.

New York had been hot on Cameron during the Winter Meetings in December, but talks leveled off when a match could not be made. The Yankees' landscape has changed with the addition of Mark Teixeira, however, as the club now looks to move either Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher from the crowded outfield picture.

GM Brian Cashman has received calls on both players.Though the Yankees would prefer to trade Nady because he is arbitration eligible and, as a Scott Boras client, almost certainly will test the free agent waters after the 2009 season, Swisher is available. He boasts the ability to play all three outfield positions and is a switch-hitter, but is due $21 million over the next three years.

    Hi Evil Empire!
Overall, in my opinion, I would rather take Ichiro over Manny or any other players out there. Give Seattle Melky, Kennedy, Nady and a prospect for Ichiro. What you think?

Take some advice fron a White Sox fan. Swisher is a joke. He spends most of his time trying to get TV time for his ugly mug. He led the league in pie in the face pranks and stupid radio and Comcast TV commercials. I never could figure out why Ozzie didn't kill him. I just cannot imagine having a locker next to this clown and having to put up with his overbearing personality. Picture him smashing a cream pie in Jeter's face in a Giradi controlled clubhouse all the while he's batting 198 and leaving runners on base and dropping flyballs in the outfield

I gotta believe Nady has the most upshot of any of these three. Doesn't matter to me, though, because none of them are going to play in Chavez Ravine (except when Cameron and the Brewers come to get spanked for a few days out of the summer).
All hail Ethier, Kemp and MANNY RAMIREZ!

    Evil #1,
Don't hate anyone. Melky is still very young.
    Evil # 3,
I was thinking that would be a possible deal. Ichiro doesn't get along with his teammates in Seattle. I was thinking more like Nady & Matsui. I would rather see Gardner given the shot at CF than acquiring Cameron. Even with ichiro we will have 2 leadoff hitters. Glad I am not Cashman.

Gardner should be in CF -if he walks he will be on 3rd in 2 pitches. Hopefully he can hit a little. Having competetion at positions is healthy . Keep them all and pick up Sheets (we actaully need a left though).

Duh, who the hell would want Cameron for that money, he is probably the one of if not the most overpaid healthy player in baseball. Brewers should have done everything in their power to make it happen when the Yanks were interested, now they are not unless the Brewers eat a good portion of the contract. Its funny how they didn't make any comments about the Yanks spending when they were trying to dump that awful contract on them.

I'd love to see the Brewers get a left handed bat in there - preferably via trade. Corey Hart is expendable, and some owners may still bite on his All-Star status.
As for Cameron, I guess it all depends on what they do with Billy Hall. They're pretty deep in CF, and I think Tony Gwynn is more than ready to start on an everyday basis.
My point in all that rambling: deal Cameron to ANY takers.

    hi davfied,
Seattle is trying to get rid of some of their salaries, so they wouldn't want to get Matsui. Therefore cheap and young prospects are the best option to offer them. Ever since the 1st year when Ichiro played in Major League, he has being my favorite. He is probably the smartest hitter in the major right now. Getting 200+ hits every season for his whole career that gives you some hints already.

    Evil,
I agree about Ichiro. Matsui has a full no trade. There is a considerable Asian population in Seattle and I was thinking it would be more desirable for him and the team as a draw. That is why they haven't traded Ichiro up to now.
    Yanks/Giants,
I agree with your post 99%. It should be Gardners job to lose. If he hits .250 or above with everything else he brings, he is the CF. The only reason that would change my opinion would be acquiring Ichiro which would be a hole new can of worms. Damon for Ichiro? I can dream.

Ichiro has amazing talent, but he's afraid to leave the comfort of Seattle for a real contender. Meanwhile, he's watched his countrymen So Taguchi, Tad Iguchi, and Hideki Okajima win rings. For years, I wanted the Dodgers to make a play for him, but it doesn't make sense at this point. The Giants could probably land him for prospects, then they'd haul Japanese tourists by the busload in to spend their over-valued yen at PacBell Park. Would make good business sense. He'd still be playing for a loser though.

    davfied,
Most or ONLY Asians that like japanese players are Japanese.. LOL. Although I am not Japanese and I am Asian, I do like Ichiro. And his the only Japanese player I like in MLB. If Seattle wants Matsui, which I hope they do, we should give him to them with a big Red Envelope. He is getting old and I never like him anyway. LOL

Cameron will stay with the Brewers, but, if he were going to go anywhere, it won't be the Yanks. Didn't last week the Brew Crew GM came out and blasted the Yanks organization for all their spending this offseason and how they're ruining baseball? Not sure why he'd then turn around and make a trade with them anymore. The Brewers need rotation help badly, so how come they are just letting Sheets walk and not making any serious inquiries to Lowe, Perez, or Wolf is beyond me.

Tex covers the home runs and RBI's that we lost by losing Giambi but will Swisher make up for the 25 HR and 100 RBI from Abreu? I think we should keep Nady since there is no guarantee Swisher will rebound after having a bad year last year. Let Melky and Gardner battle for CF. Last year may have been a fluke for Melky. One of them will come though. We should go get Perez rather than Petite. Perez is a young lefty with lots of potential. His upside is much better than Petite's downslide. Teams must be worried about Sheet's medical problems because I thought someone would pick him up by now also. He is hurt alot but when he is healthy he is lights out.

melky a down year i think he may have some game in him but i don't think it will be for another few years or till he goes to another team.i think he doesn't handle the yankee pressure too well if you look at his numbers ofer the last 3 years he has been in 409 games has 343 rbi n runs added together and his avg. is about .267 thoses numbers are alright but you would like to see your outfielders closer to an rbi or run a game and batting around .285 or better.thats why i would like them to keep nady cause in his past 3 years he been in 328 games has 370 rbi n runs and around a .294 avg and only being in 328 games he is not wore down.i also think though if they do trade him if they can get something better then it is a good trade or do it to free up some money to bring in more pitching help then go for it.

Hi Daniel, I think the reason why Brewers or any other teams out there not making offers to Lowe, Perez, Wolf, Sheets is b/c they are asking too much. This Winter the price was inflated by the NYY and thus players think they can base their asking price on those salaries paid out by the NYY. Don't forget the owners are not sure how the recession will effect MBL for 09. Will people cut back on their spending and etc.,
Hi Dav, we now have the bats and arms...I am beginning to warm up to the idea of having Ichiro as the CF for the NYY.

yankeefan4ever, I wouldn't look at it like that, its more like; Tex more than makes up for Abreu, Matsui more than makes up for Giambi (maybe with less power, but just as much production) Posoda gives you much more than IRod did, now Swisher will only be a small drop from what Nady (his stats are misleading, he wasn't that great for the yanks, and it was a career year) gives you, but between the other improvements, and if he brings in return a CF who can perform better than Cabrera (or Gardner) than its still a huge upgrade overall.

Tony Gwynn could start in CF--he'd be pretty fine defensively, but he'd probably only be a #7 or 8 hitter, based on his light swinging history at the major league level....and why should the Brewers make any comments about Cameron's contract when the Yankees were interested in him--10 million is obviously just peanuts for the pinstripe poohbahs....
