Brewers add pitchers Wright, Mendoza

The Milwaukee Brewers added two former Yankees pitchers in separate roster moves on Wednesday, acquiring left-handed starter Chase Wright in a trade and right-handed reliever Ramiro Mendoza with a Minor League free agent contract.

Milwaukee sent 23-year-old outfield/catching prospect Eric Fryer to the Yankees for Wright, who turns 26 on Sunday. Wright was a third-round Draft pick in 2001 and made a brief Major League debut in 2007 but spent all of 2008 in the Minors, going 10-3 with a 2.72 ERA for three of New York's affiliates.

Wright was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster, which is now full.

The Brewers selected Fryer in the 10th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and he enjoyed a breakthrough season at Class A West Virginia in 2008. A converted outfielder who focused on catching during the second half of the season, Fryer batted .335 in 104 games with a .407 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, 63 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

I think the Brewers are in for a bit of reality this season. They had a nice small run, but I don't think their new pitching rotation will carry them that far...and if Prince is still laying off the meat his numbers are going to drop even more this year...I said numbers, not weight!!!

Why is this a bad move? Not every move has to be the equal of bringing in C.C.

Why is this bad? Not every team can spend 250 million on pay roll.

I wonder why the Yankees traded for a catching prospect, that is one of their strongest position areas in the minors. They have Franco Cervelli, Jesus Montero, Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka. Actually Cervelli could probably be a third cather with the Yankees if they carried three catchers, which they won't, and Montero is their #1 or 2 minor league prospects and the catcher of the future! As far as Romine goes, he has all the tools to make a major league catcher in a few years, and Higshioka was one of the top high school catchers in the United States last year and was heavily recruited by USC!! I think Fryer will be converted back to the outfield position real soon if I am not mistakin!!!

I like it. Acquiring a young, seemingly talented guy who can catch for a guy who will never be more than a mop up guy. See, we can make small moves too....GO YANKEES !

Remember that game in Boston, two years ago, when Chase Wright gave up four straight homeruns to Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell, and Jason Varitek? He got sent down after that game I think.
If your going to be throwing ballons for fastballs, he better have some great offspeed stuff. Or else, I say the Yankees just made a steal!

this is a move that shows Melvin knows the middle reliever is going to be the most important part of this years team. The starters will go 5 to 6 innings at the best. Then the ???? can the relievers hold them. I say yes and Wright is a guy who can help them.
    88-74 and make the playoffs

Im a brewer fan all the way but, us brewer fans better get the flashlights and batteries ready cause we arent leaving the cellar this year!!!!
Horrible that melvin isnt or wasnt going after any of the HUGE free agents in the off season or atleast make a trade to help out the much needed pitching staff. Oh well, Brewer fans are used to disappointment so nothing new, Go Rays!!! Beat the Yankees

    Before the 2009 season begins...
Its the four week of spring training...
The Brewers front office makes a startling discovery...
The only pitcher on the roster with a winning record for 2008 is .. gulp!...Manny Parra!
You then realize your team is out of contention without even playing a regualr season game.
Bernie the Brewer just switched to drinking scotch...straight out of the bottle.
    CUBS WILL SHINE ...IN 2009!

ANY pitching coming in is a good thing now isn't it???? Look, Milwaukee has no chance at anything which is why last year when they were close they shot all they had with C.C.....Don't get down on Melvin, when was the last time they had a winning record??? YUP !! Enjoy, hope, it won't be pretty but the cubblettes are still in the division so all is never lost !!

#18, the cubs wont ever win even with the good players they are thought to have. they are doomed since they have a losing ownership's trust, a floundering newspaper co, and soriano. sign prior and then (why not) make another losing futile run until august 1st?

I think it's hilarious that the Yankee fans on here think they got a steal...those numbers look awfully nice, but put it in perspective: it's single-A ball. So you traded a left-handed starting pitcher who would crack the rotation almost anywhere else for a single-A baller...maybe it'll work out for you guys, but A ball is a far cry from the bigs! As for the Crew, they filled a hole that needed to be filled: some backup to a thin rotation. Pos(t)ers 1, 2, 3, 16, and 17: you'd better not jump back on the bandwagon half way through the season when the Brewers are up 5 games in the division if you're abandoning your team this early in the year!
