Braves may give Vazquez an extension

“JavierJavier Vazquez(notes) had a stellar year for the National League East third-place Atlanta Braves. He won 15 games and had a 2.87 ERA and 1.03 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). Plus, the guy had 238 strikeouts.

Not bad for a guy the Yankees dumped back in 2004 after he gave up a grand slam to Johnny Damon(notes) in that famous American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Vazquez is in a little better spot these days and it appears that the Braves are going to try and get him signed to a contract extension this off-season, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. With the year he had, Vazquez would likely be looking for some big dollars.

It's all smoke and mirrors. He's got a career ERA over 4.00, and he's bound to regress to the mean.

Vasqquez never was forgiven for giving up the grand slam to Damon. Everyone has seen how dangerous Johnny is in the clutch. What can a pitcher do, but walk him, unless the bases are loaded?!!!
Vasquez has been a steady performer since the Yanks dumped him. An extension wouldn't hurt.

    Artist,
I like him. He is an enigma. He has eletric stuff. Always one bad inning. I wouldn't mind the Yankees getting him back.

Hard to argue with the numbers he put up in 2009... Rumor has it he's hard to get a long with in the clubhouse.

I like shoring up the starting pitching but the Bravos still need to find a big bat or two. Resinging Hudson and extending Vazquez is gonna make that hard. If they can unload Lowe's big contract than it might work, but I don't see a lot of teams wanting to take on that burden. Minaya might be dumb enough to take him, but of all the Mets bats the only one I would want would be Beltran, Reyes, or Wright and I don't think they'll be giving up any of those.

Davfied...just go ahead and buy Lackey for 5 years, $300 million, then trade for R. Halladay and sign him to an extension, to the tune of 10 years, $500 million. Re-sign Damon for, well, wait a sec....who's coming out next year in free agency? I'm sure somebody better than he is, so just sign him for a year - $28 million seems fair, right?
Oh, and dump Matsui and sign Matt Holliday to a 7 year, $210 million contract.
We already hear of them naming a bridge after Jeter, so I don't need to mention that.
Oh wait...I almost forgot - Pettitte will retire...so go ahead and trade the rest of their farm system for Felix Hernandez and sign him to a 15 year, $750 million contract.

As a Met fan, I would love for the Braves to lock up a lifetime .500 pitcher for 4 or 5 years.
Then give a big contract to Hudson also coming off a surgery year.
Add that to Lowe's awful contract.
    Risky business!

9 out of 12 season's he's pitched over 200 inning, the other 3 were his first 2 seasons in the league, and in 2004 with the Yanks he pitched 198 inning.
That durability alone is what makes him such a great #1. Not to mention he's a swing and miss pitcher in the running for K leader every year.
He might be a .500 pitcher, but SP's are measured alot more than simply wins/loses.

#18. No, the idea wasn't to dump him to save bucks just days ago. The idea was if they can get a big bat for him, then they'd dump him. There's been word on how much Vazquez has helped with Jurrjen's development, and a lot of Braves players, including Chipper Jones, want Vazquez back and are lobbying for it. Additionally, Vazquez had a better year than Lowe, and Lowe's salary is not favorable. So, the idea was, and is, to trade Lowe for a bat, and if they can't get much, then trade Vazquez. Personally, I think that with the poor and slim FA market for starting pitchers, the Braves may be able to dump Lowe then maybe go after Jason Bay, especially if they can get another "hometown" discount with Vazquez. Vazquez has always wanted to play for the Braves and Bobby Cox because Atlanta is the closest city to his hometown besides playing for Florida or Tampa, so that is not out of the question. The report today was that Wren was looking at the possibility of extending Vazquez. I think he had a discussion with Vazquez's agent, but I bet that was just to feel things out as to gauge how to approach the Lowe & big bat thing. I don't think it's imperative the Braves keep either Lowe or Vazquez. They still have Kris Medlen, Kawakami, and their draft pick Mike MInor who appears more ready than most people think, let alone another strong pitcher in AA. Their pitching is strong, and if they can leverage that for a bat, they'll do so. This team is almost there, and with their pitching, the emergence of Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, etc...they should be in the playoffs soon again. The bullpen IMO is what needs the most attention, but they just signed Proctor, and I woulnd't be surprised if they went after Smotlz and signed either Mike Gonzalez or Soriano.

With possibly two releivers going the FA path, we may have to move a pitcher to the bullpen, and get the big bat of first baseman via free agency.
