Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett(notes) would like to stay in New England for a while, it appears. He's apparently planning to meet with the team in the next few weeks to discuss a contract extension, according to WEEI.
He'll make $12.1 million next year but is free to roam the streets of any city he wants after next season if a new deal can't be worked out.
It looks like Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is plenty aware of the big bucks it will take to retain Beckett: "He's put himself in a position to be valued very highly by us," he said to WEEI, but he wasn't predicting a definite deal: "Those things have a way of taking care of themselves. ... We'll see what happens."

We need to get together and celebrate #27. I'll pick up the entire bill. All the loyal fans of the Yankees are invited to my home after tonights victory. Even the good Red Sox fans are invited they know who they are. Everyone can come except azzholes and haters and that know it all PPW. Pancho and Jacks can come if you vouch for them scott. I will make sure there are females there. I will invite my students at Hooters, they need some time off for good behavior. My lady friend will also invite her friends from her job at Big Lots. All my friends are invited so just send me the bill for your airline tickets but try to make them cheap. Go Yanks.

Rene, I wasn't saying Dye was a long term answer, but when you figure it will take a 4-5 year, $15-$16 per season type of deal to get Bay back, versus a 1-2 year, incentive heavy deal to bring in Dye, while young guys like Reddick, Kalish, and Westmoreland get more seasoning in the minors, it could very well be a viable option.

I just get the feeling that the dramatic increase in expected non-tender offers to arbitration eligible players, combined with the economy, is going to drive FA prices this off-season even lower than last year when guys like Bobby Abreu and Orlando Hudson were signed very late and for relative bargains. I see that same thing happening again, to an even larger extent. One advantage of the Red Sox holding off on signing any of their four big names (Ortiz, Martinez, Beckett, Lowell) is that they maintain the financial flexibility that could allow a team with their budget the ability to really take advantage of a down market.
