The Los Angeles Angels say right-hander Ervin Santana has a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow and it is serious enough that he could start the season on the disabled list according to MLB.com.

An MRI showed the discomfort Santana felt came from a sprained medial collateral ligament. Santana thought the injury might be worse and feared he might need surgery. Surgery was ruled out by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Santana said he will start playing catch next week.

Manager Mike Scioscia, however, felt the issue was serious enough to rule out Santana's availability at the start of the season. He is set to open the season on the disabled list.
