The Los Angeles Angels, unwilling to meet Mark Teixeira's desire for a 10-year contract, are in discussions with CC Sabathia and could offer him a contract that approaches the $140-million bid extended to him by the New York Yankees, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

The Angels appear reluctant to guarantee more than seven years in a contract for Teixeira, said a source familiar with the club's thinking. They appear more likely at this time to pursue Sabathia, with an offer in the range of Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5-million contract with the New York Mets.

Teixeira remains the Angels' top priority — the club would sign him but does not want to miss out on Sabathia while waiting to see whether Teixeira's asking price falls. The Angels are not believed to have made a formal offer to either player.

General Manager Tony Reagins said the club has not ruled out retaining Teixeira.

"We've had discussions about what the potential framework of a deal might be," Reagins said. "At this time, I would say we still have interest at a high level. We understood going into this that it was going to take some time to accomplish."

Scott Boras, the agent for Teixeira, represented Carlos Beltran four years ago and set the same asking price: 10 years for $200 million. Beltran did not sign with the Mets until January, for seven years and $119 million. By then, other top free agents had signed elsewhere.

Boras declined to comment on how many years Teixeira has requested.

Rumor and Speculation. I love how Boras can get his clients names in the paper when nothing is even happening.

Boras has a long history of holding his players back from signing until well into free agency so they can try to squeeze every last penny out of a contract. If the Angels are looking for a quick deal with Teixeira, they might as well forget it and move on to Sabathia or someone else. No way Boras lets him sign until at least the Yankees or Red Sox (or both) get involved in the bidding war.

Oh and once Tex or C.C. falls everything else will happen in a matter of days. The leftover scraps will be signed in January.

    Yankees: Texeria = 8 Years, $160M, with incentives, + 2-1 year options. Sabathia = 6 years, $140M +, Burnett = 5 years, $80M, with incentives

Teiara is not an impact player either on the field or at the gate. Teams would have to be foolish to give him that kind of contract. Pitching is the name of the game, it's been proven time and time again.

davified that's a lot of $$ but I can only wish it happens. yanks gotta at least get one of those pitchers, that's a must.
There's got a be alot of incentives in Burnett's contract too. Like its really worth only 2 mil a year, but if he makes a certain amount of starts he gets his cash. there cannot be a complete guarantee of 80 mil in that, he'll just pull a Pavano like he did before.

    dEEZ nuts,
In Burnett's case the incentives should be # of starts, oh $1M for each over 25 per season. $5M for each season he stays off the DL, $3M each year he gets over 190 IP.
Sabathia: Loose weight, get in shape with a personal trainer / nutritionist. $3M per season.

The Angels, not the Yankees will control what happens in this years FA sweeps. They know that they can afford only one of the two between CC and Tex. If they wait too long on a contract with Tex , they might lose the chancce to bid for CC. probably making them lose both. If they do they will be a little worse off than last year. So they will have to make that decision and make it fast. The Decision being which one to go after hardcore. Te difference between the 7years they re offering Tex and the 10 he s asking for willprove to be too much of a gap to close. especially with the Hanky Bros standing around with their giant pocketbook. Right behind them stands Bora$ pouring the lighter fluid on the fire. Interesting weekend !!!!!!!

    At last we AGREE
If the spankees sign Tex--CC--AJ, as you say in post #6, you are telling me that you feel the only way the spankees can get back to the playoffs is to BUY their way back. Just like the way they have in the past.
That's the point we agree on, buying their way back.

    nywho,
The Yankees have holes on their team to fill. They Yankees have the ability to get the best available. Please don't tell me that you are as much of a dumb a$$ as your posts lead anyone with half a brain thinks. They are sure a hell not going to fill them with bad players. BTW, other than ARod , who was the last big name FA they have signed?

I agree with #7 Texeria is not worth that money, Yanks need pitching first and formost, AJ is the key with CC a bonus, but I'd be happier with Peavey in a trade. #13 its not the only its just the quickest, they are just trying to keep their fans happy, and give themselves the best shot at winning, something I guess your team cant do, causing you to be miserable and have a need to troll boards bashing others your jealous of.

nywho So I guess you think who ever Boston goes after signs on for free so they wouldn t be buying their way back into the playoffs. Thats an interesting concept. The Yanks are the only team who will be buying. Every other team has the charm to lure players in for Free

The Angels can't outbid the Yankees-this is more Boras spin.It always has to be a bidding war to drive up the contract. The Yanks will get the pitchers they need. Tex is an extra bonus but not needed with that new rotation. The East will be like it should be with the Yankees on top .

You idiots that keep saying that the Yankees just "BUY" their team must be watching some other league than I am. The league I watch (MLB) has only paid proffessionals in it. So basically every team owner is "buying" their team.
In a lot of cases it is not just that the Yankees have the ability to spend more money on their players, but they have the committment to the franchise to make them winners. Sometimes the huge contracts work, sometimes they bust......... but the Yankees have demonstrated over the years that they are committed to putting a team on the field with the ABILITY to compete at a high level.
Any fan of any team would be well served to have the Steinbrenners committment to excellence instilled into their franchise. Don't be jealous of the Yankees, be mad at your team owner.

bryan......I usually agree with most of your posts, and although I not disagreeing with your post 15, I would say that Tex wasn t worth a ten year contract, I would think 8 and that even may be too much. But when you factor in the damage that could be done if he signed with the Sox, and where that would leave the Yanks , Those 2 more years become a little easier to swallow. The sox have to look at it the same way. Of course this is a secondary to getting pitching. I d like to see AJ and Peavy in stripes.

    Stewie,
Some people are just haters and they don't want to mention the contract they just offered to another Japaneese pitcher or the 50M they gave to talk to DiceK. That doesn't count as trying to buy a title. Bull$h!t.

Stewie, I'm going to agree with you. The Angels are only going to able to afford one or the other. The thought of signing anyone to a 10 year contract is crazy. I see the Angels needing a bat more than pitching. I think Vlad is at of the beginning of decline, not bad but a little. Never know, we could end up seeing Giambi in Anaheim. He would probably be easy to sign, he's from right up the freway.

    Hey spankee fans
Angels have contacted CC's agent, and the are about to top the spankees offer.
That means the spankees are going to have to up their offer.
Maybe they should go to 290m to match CC's weight.
