MLB - Sports Rumors

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim begin its battle for the American League pennant this evening against the New York Yankees but the team has already started its battle to bring slugging outfielder Bobby Abreu(notes) back.

The rumor is that Abreu is not happy with the initial offer from the team, according to Sports Illustrated. The offer is supposedly for about $16 million over two years. (Who would take that?) Abreu supposedly would like more.

The right fielder is making $5 million this season on the one-year deal he signed after the New York Yankees tossed him aside. Incentives have paid Abreu another million bucks so far this season. His main competitors in the free-agent market will be Matt Holliday(notes) and Jason Bay(notes). But Abreu, who had 30 stolen bags this year, turns 36 in March, which will make some teams skittish on signing any multi-year deal.

Wish yanks kept him. Wasting time on getting that handicap Xena Nady. Yankees please get rid of Nady, Damon, Matsui, and sign Holiday and Figgin.

Yes, the Evil Empire always gets exactly what they want regarding any free agents out there. Tell me then, why haven't they been able to win the World Series in nearly a decade? Must be the worst management decisions ever!

Yanks get what ever they wanted because we are willing to spend. Not like your loser team who's probably stingy. I rather want my team to spend then letting all the owners keep all the money.

@TomJ What team do you root for? This "Evil Empire always gets exactly what they want regarding any free agents" complaint is so tired already. Your team OBVIOUSLY doesn't care enough about winning to buy the free agents you need to compete. And if your team is the RedSux, then you should've tried harder to lock up Tex. Either way, stop your whining.

Bobby Abreu had another good solid year. Believe it or not, if he retires now, he would be a candidate for the Hall of Fame. He is a lifetime .300 hitter, plus or minus a point, has over 250 hrs. and steals, and has played for championship teams. Good Luck! Bobby

Interesting off season after the Yanks win the World Series. They WILL sign Joe Mauer and Figgins ,Posada will DH and say good-bye to Damon ,Matsui and Melky.

BronxBomber - Mauer isnt a free agent this offseason so there isnt a way to sign him. Where would Figgins play if we signed him? Yankees will probably throw some feelers towards Bay and Holliday if they somehow make it past the grace period but I dont see the Yankees spending big this offseason. I think a trade for a SP will be most likley considering the Red Sox look poised to get a pitcher and a big bat this offseason

The Yanks will not sign Holiday, or Mauer - at least that's my opinion. I think they will resign with the teams they are with now. Figgins too..If Im a Angel owner my main focus would be Figgins and Lackey out of all their free agents...
Abreu should take that deal - agreed..
If the Yanks sign anyone or anything during the off-season it should be Jason Bay and another quality starter..Mauer would be cool, but I just cant see it...

Even though the Yanks have not won a World Series since 2000, they've been to 2 WS since (01 and 03) and almost won 4 in a row (98-01) and 5 out of 6 (98-03)!!! I have been more than willing to pay my cable company $160 to watch them out of market. The Yankees have the best management in sports!
    Go Yanks!!

Jason Bay isn't going to do a "Johnney Damon" and cross Conn. to the hated Yanks. If anything, he will return to his roots with Seattle.

The Yankees biggest need this off season will be either a reliever or a starting pitcher depending on their decisions regarding Hughes and Joba being in the pen or on the mound in 2010. As good a year as Matsui had he will not be retained because his knees are just not there anymore and they can't employ a full time DH with Posada, Arod. Jeter and others needing to DH a few games here and there. Damon might get extended but the Yanks do have a lot of outfielders with Melky, Gardner, Swisher still there and Austin Jackson probably coming up at some point in 2010. The best move the Yanks could make would be to sign Bay so that a- it boosts their offense and b- takes him away from the Red Sox and weakens their line up.

Why would the Yankees pursue any free agents this offseason? Damon may throw like Mary, but he's still Johnny Demon at the plate. Worse case, Matsui doesn't get a contract offer (and if he can't play the field, he won't). Nady will be back, AJ is down in triple A waiting for an opening, so there are no openings in the outfield. The bullpen is the best in the league already, Mariano isn't going anywhere, Posada's still under contract, and we've got Jesus down on the farm (not to mention Cervelli, who'll be replacing Molina as the backup backstop). Jesus will be Posada's eventual replacement, when Georgie's good and ready to retire. Starting rotation is solid, Joba should be fine with no pitch limits, and we've got Wang returning. Pettitte will hang around another year, as long as he doesn't have any stupid salary expectations. You pick up free agents to fill glaring needs on your roster, and the Yankees simply don't have any. Why spend more than you have to? The Yankees payroll was less this year than last year, and next year it will be lower still. More money for George to spend on depends.

I'm tired of the same old "the Yankees buy championships" argument. It is simply false. You always hear it when they're doing well, like this year. It's "what do you expect, they have the highest payroll.' How about last year, when they had an even higher payroll? They didn't even make the playoffs. They don't buy anything. They make a huge amount of money and spend it on quality players. I'm sure the Steinbrenners make out just fine also. No other team makes as much money. That's not the Yankees' fault.

Nobody cares about the offseason except those teams who have already started theirs.
