AL MVP field thins with Quentin injury

The surging MVP candidacy of Dustin Pedroia may have received an unfortunate boost Friday with the news that White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin could miss the remainder of the season with what the Associated Press is reporting is a broken right wrist.

Quentin was removed from the lineup before Tuesday's game because of what the White Sox described then as a sore right forearm, and he hasn't played since. The team said yesterday that he was hurt during last Monday's game at Cleveland.

Quentin, who has been hit by a major-league high 20 pitches this season, will have surgery Monday, according the AP. A screw will be inserted into the wrist, and he will be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks.

Quentin's slugging made him perhaps the leading candidate to win the MVP award. He leads the league with 36 home runs, is fourth with 100 RBIs, fourth in SLG at .571, sixth in OBP at .394 and boasts a fantastic OPS+ of 149. And he did it all -- or at least was doing it all — for a first-place team.

Should Quentin miss the stretch run, it also significantly weakens the White Sox postseason chances, which would again help the Red Sox. Boston is currently four games up over the Central-leading White Sox and 5.5 games up on the Minnesota Twins in the wild card race.

It was hard to imagine both teams passing the Red Sox with Quentin around. Now it seems nearly impossible.

If both the White Sox and Twins pass the Red Sox, Boston doesn't deserve to make it. Tough luck for Quentin and the White Sox.

You remember Versallies? what a SS. I remember when they brought him up. Quite an acrobat. That is bad luck. Do you think Ozzie got the gun out with the Tequilla? I don't think they will make the playoffs now.

i still think quentin deserves the MVP if the white sox make the playoffs. of course boston.com would say that hes no longer a canidate. no one means more to the white sox then Carlos i think he deserves and has earned it i will be sick if they give it to the midget

He should still be a viable canidate, Pedroia was sluping earlier this season, should his chances be discounted based on that?

After the way the bats have been shattering all season and the talk of them being inferior, here we have a bat just about shattering a teams playoff chances. Go figure.

hands down, dustin pedroia is my favorite baseball player, he was my favorite player last year before he started doing well... that being said, i still believe that if quentin did not get injured, he completly deserved the mvp award (if he didn't tail off into a horrible slump).

now, i think that pedroia is the al mvp, mostly becasue, without his bat in the line up, or his glove at 2nd, the sox would have surely been out of play off contention. with all the injuries the team has had (ortiz out 2 months, lowell on dl 2 times, drew on the dl, lugo on the dl [though, that's actually been good], beckett on the dl 2 times, dice-k on the dl, wake on the dl, buchholz on the dl, schilling out for the season, colon on the dl, and probably some more...) and the loss of rameriz, pedroia and youkilis kept the team afloat. and even after youk started to slow down, pedroia has been getting hotter and hotter, which could last for the rest of the season...(i think he's batting about 700 in his last 9 games)

might i add that pedroia is leeding in BA, runs, and hits, he's also leading in 2 hit games, 3 hit games, and 4 hit games (though those are only things that you would learn by watching nesn, so should therefor count for squat) he's 2nd in the AL in doubles, he's one of them ost effective basestealers in all of baseball stealing 17 times and only getting caught once. he's also had like 5 9+ game hit streaks (might be 4) and he plays gold glove calibur 2nd base.

How can you be a valuable player when you are so stupid that you you hurt your team with a self inflected trip to the DL. When you consider that the White Sox will have to count on someone else down for the September run, I would not even give him a serious consideration. If the sox miss the post season it's all his fault!

I think its dumb blaming one man for the whole team not making the playoffs yes Quentin is an amazing player and with him the White Sox have a better offense but baseball is a team sport if it were a one man game than u'd expect the Yankees to never lose after all they do have pAy-Rod!

As much as I do hate to see a player get injured, this really opens the door for my twins. Considering most "experts" had us picked 4th and the sox 3rd in the division, i'd say we're doing pretty darn well. Even when we won 4 out of 5 years it seemed we never were picked to win. If the Rays weren't doing so well Gardenhire definitely would deserve manager of the year. He seems to finish 2nd and 3rd a lot.

I'll have a bucket waiting for you, czheck.
Since Zolio Versailles was a lifetime .240 hitter, one may need to broaden a compare/contrast cycle with Dustin Pedroia.
Perhaps Pedroia one day becomes another Joe Morgan, sans the twitching in the batter's box and the inspiration for a future, "let's see him fired" website...

Morneau is leading Pedroia in OPS, OBS, SLG, HR, RBI, BB (because nobody wants to pitch to him) and straight up Canadianness. Morneau deserves the MVP.

I agree with #17 chicago surprised me and the twins, but now the twins will win the division. Boston wins the wild card. If anyone hoped that the world series will be the two chicago teams. Forget about it. Pedroia will win the mvp his numbers are too good for quentin. If only he would have played the rest of the season i would seriously consider him, but now it doesn't seem he will win.

#19 Morneau might be in the running but Pedrioa will beat him out. As for not wanting to pitch to someone didnt Chicago's manager last week say it was the first time he had to walk a jockey ( pedroa ) and that he would have rather had faced Ortiz again. If Quentin finished the season he would have had it.

Boston wo Pedroia--still wins 90+ games. Say they had some noname at 2nd--they put up with Manny's BS for the rest of the year--and comfortably make the playoffs. Pedroia "sees" alot of sweet pitches because he bats in front of some very good hitters.
Morneau, on the other hand, is lucky to get one decent pitch to swing at per AB. Put some random (HS) 1B on MN, and MN won't win 60 games in he season! MN has only two good players--Boston has about 10 (maybe more). Its no comparison between those two (Pedroia/Morneau) about MVP. Manny was more important to Boston (when he was there ) than Pedroia. This not a knock on Pedroia--he's very good--but on a team loaded with all-stars, he isn't even the MVP of the RSUX.

Quentin should have earned the MVP but now he gets the MVD (most valuable dumba**). Whoever thinks Pedroia should get it is smoking crack! He's a great player, sure. But he's not even the MVP of the team. Youklis is. The AL is starting to fade. Rays the best team?!? Cardinals will sneak in the wildcard and win it all.
