A's sign Foulke as set-up man for Street

Keith Foulke is back for another go-round with the Oakland A's, signing a $700,000 one-year major-league deal that could be worth an additional $2.5 million in bonuses, including income bumps in the event the former All-Star performs set-up chores or if he closes games. According to A's assistant general manager David Forst, Foulke will help left-hander Alan Embree set up for closer Huston Street according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Foulke said on a conference call that he doesn't have any problem with that role. Though he hasn't pitched in the big leagues in more than a year, Foulke's inclusion in the bullpen will increase speculation that the rebuilding A's will move Street or Embree this season.

"I never considered myself a closer, I've always been a bullpen guy," he said. "Sometimes pitching in the seventh inning is more valuable than pitching in the ninth."

Strret will be the most under used player on the team, since the A's will be lucky to win 75 games!

This is called a future trade pick up. The A's will use Folke in the bullpen as a set up man and a few saves when allstar break happens Beane will trade Folke for a prospect. Closer and set up men are easy trades mid season.

I liked the Incredible Foulke when he was in Oakland in '03, good to see him coming back out of retirement. For those who think, "The last player to come out of retirement to play with a crappy team was 'Roid-Rocket' and look at him," was Foulke in the Mitchell Report? No, so don't throw that crap at a guy who's being given a second chance at playing for any club.

If this is supposed to enhance the genius that is money ball/Billy Beane I`m not buyin it. Talk about a recycle bin special...is he rebuilding the vaunted red sox 04 pen with Embree? What next Rich Garces?? If he trades Huston Street for prospects I`d like to see those losers try to hold a lead. Maybe they`ll beat out the $trangers for 3rd place out West.
