Phillies beat Dodgers 10-4, return to World Series
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Ryan Howard(notes) and the defending champs are back in the World Series—proving last year was no fluke and looking even more dangerous this time around.
Jayson Werth(notes) homered twice, Shane Victorino(notes) and Pedro Feliz(notes) also connected and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant.
Brad Lidge(notes) closed it out, Howard was selected NL championship series MVP and the Phillies became the first team to reach consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees in 2000-01.
“I can get used to it,” manager Charlie Manuel told a cheering crowd. “We got one more step and we’re going to get it!”
Now, Jimmy Rollins(notes) and crew wait for their next opponent. They’ll go for their third World Series title beginning next Wednesday night at New York or Los Angeles. The Yankees lead the Angels 3-1 in the ALCS, which resumes Thursday night at Angel Stadium.
Meanwhile, slugger Manny Ramirez(notes), manager Joe Torre and the rest of the Dodgers go home after leading the NL with 95 wins in the regular season and sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series.
“They’re confident, they’re talented, and they’re going where we all want to go right now—the World Series,” Torre said, praising the power-hitting Phillies.
With their latest big night at the plate, Philadelphia overcame another shaky outing by 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP Cole Hamels(notes). Los Angeles closed to 9-4 in the eighth, but Ryan Madson(notes) escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Russell Martin(notes) and retiring Casey Blake(notes) on a grounder.
After beating Tampa Bay in last year’s World Series, the Phillies are trying to become the first repeat champions from the NL since the Cincinnati Reds in 1975-76. The Yankees were the last team to win consecutive titles when they captured three in a row from 1998-2000.
“We got one more step,” Howard said. “Then we got action!”
Andre Ethier(notes), James Loney(notes) and pinch-hitter Orlando Hudson(notes) hit solo homers for the Dodgers, who also lost to the Phillies in five games in last year’s NLCS.
The teams combined to tie the record of seven homers in a postseason game. It was the fifth time that’s happened.
“They were better than us,” Ramirez said. “You saw what they were capable of doing.”
Fireworks exploded over Citizens Bank Park after Victorino caught a fly ball for the final out. The NL East champions, who beat Colorado in four games in the opening round, met Lidge in the middle of the diamond to celebrate and began putting on hats with the stitched-in logo of “WS2009.”
Team president David Montgomery led the crowd in a chant of “Charlie! Charlie!” during trophy ceremonies on the field. Then, players retreated to the clubhouse to spray champagne and celebrate.
On the 29th anniversary of their first World Series title, the Phillies became the first NL team to win consecutive pennants since the Atlanta Braves did it 13 years ago.
“Big games call for big times,” Werth said. “Hopefully, we can keep it going. We’ve got four more games to win.”
Five pitchers tossed 4 2-3 strong innings in relief of an ineffective Hamels, who hasn’t been the dominant ace he was last postseason. Chad Durbin(notes) earned the win by retiring all four batters he faced, including Ramirez representing the tying run in the fifth.
Lidge, who has bounced back from a rough season with spotless work in the playoffs, tossed a scoreless ninth.
“I always believed it was going to turn around,” he said. “One of the biggest things was I was starting to feel really healthy at the end of the season.”
Hamels allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings. Still, he got a standing ovation on his way to the dugout.
Vicente Padilla(notes), the former Phillie who was excellent in his first two playoff starts, lasted just three-plus innings and gave up six runs.
Once considered the NL’s laughingstock, the Phillies have been thinking dynasty since riding down Broad Street on flatbed trucks during the city’s first championship parade in 25 years last October.
So what that they’re the team of 10,000 losses? The sad-sack losers of the past are a distant memory in Philadelphia.
This will be Philadelphia’s seventh trip to the World Series in 127 years. The Phillies beat Kansas City in 1980 and lost in 1915, 1950, 1983 and 1993. The Yankees swept Philadelphia in ’50, winning the first three games of that series by one run.
Another sellout crowd implored their team to “Beat LA!” and waved their white-and-red rally towels, rocking Citizens Bank Park on a beautiful, 63-degree night. It was only 48 on Monday night.
Coming off a dramatic comeback win in Game 4, capped by Rollins’ two-run double with two outs in the ninth, the Phillies got it going with two outs in the first. Chase Utley(notes) walked to reach safely for the 25th straight postseason game, tying Boog Powell’s major league record.
Padilla wanted no part of Howard, who hit .333 with two homers and eight RBIs in the series. He walked him on four pitches after firing three inside fastballs, hoping to make the big slugger a little uneasy.
Padilla then threw three straight balls to Werth. The fired-up crowd roared louder with every pitch out of the strike zone.
After taking two strikes, Werth sent a drive to the seats in right-center for a 3-1 lead. Fans gave Werth a curtain call and another standing ovation when he ran out to right field in the top of the second.
Werth’s solo shot off Hong-Chih Kuo(notes) in the seventh gave him five homers this postseason and made it 9-3.
“A lot of times we win games just because of our power and the fact that we can hit the ball out of the ballpark,” Manuel said. “We need to be a little bit more consistent, and I’d say we can be a better hitting team. But right now for the National League, I think we’re outstanding.”
Ethier put the Dodgers up 1-0 in the first when he connected on a 1-2 fastball down the middle, sending it into the seats in right-center. Loney’s shot in the second also came on a 1-2 pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Victorino hit a two-run shot to left off Game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw(notes) for an 8-3 lead in the sixth.
NOTES: Dallas Green, manager of the 1980 Phillies championship team, threw out the first pitch to Manuel. Green got a big hug from Dodgers third-base coach Larry Bowa, the shortstop on the ’80 team. … The Phillies are 3-2 against the Dodgers in the NLCS.

@928-LMAO!!! Good one!!!
@ 973-on your knees giving Breeze- You can stop with the psycho analysis babble bullsh*t that you obtained from your online degree with i'm-better-than-you University. The only people who have made me an "object of ridicule" on this site are you and the other 2 stooges. You three really need to address the issues in your life that give you the need to lash out at others to make yourselves feel better. I am happy with my life so I don't need to insult others to feel better. You punk b*tches started with me. Your fragile little ego needed a boost so you chose me to pick on. Sorry to disappoint you but I am not the punk b*tch kid you are used to dealing with. I've seen sign language speaking monkeys use bigger words than you. Your silly ass probably thought they were throwing up gang signs. Words don't impress me as*wipe. As far as my sex life goes....you can spew all the diarrhea of the mouth you want but the truth is I am handsome and in shape. You are a jealous, no good, Special Olympics reject. Schedule some couch time with your shrink. It will do you some good.
Now you and tomac*nt run along and enjoy banging your sisters at the family reunion this week. Or should I say enjoy the trip to Jurassic Park!!!

Hey bengod, good post. I believe you are a true Dodgers fan. You were there until the bitter end, and that's what good fans do, they take the bitter with the sweet. You're right though, the Dodgers have some good young talent, and with a piece or two here and there, I'm pretty sure you'll be back to contend again. You Dodgers fans are a tough bunch, I'm sure you'll be back even meaner and more determined to get back at us. Until then, keep swinging!!! LOL!!!

Yo, Matthew, how does it feel to be repeating Champions of the National League? LOL!!! We 'aint thinking about no American League, whoever may win it. Angels show big heart winning tonight!!! And the Yankees showed definite flaws in their game. Their starters are definitely vulnerable, and can be exploited!! The Angels have a little better starters than Yankees, Lackey was pretty good. Angels bullpen, is weak, but the Angels manager will walk our hitters every chance he gets. You saw what he did to Bonds, when they played the Giants in the WS.
So our hitters will have to apply the same constant pressure, to make them pitch to us. I love our chances against whoever we play!! With the Yankees, we're not playing their ghosts in the outfield, or their 26 championships, we will be playing them, and they are vulnerable!! Cagey Charlie will exploit every weakness they have!! Guaraldi, hasn't been managing that long, and certainly not at this level!! I'm glad Yankees lost, their fans need to be humbled!! Now, they have to live with this loss all weekend, like we had to when the Dodgers beat us in game II!! That was the longest weekend of the season, and the Dodgers fans poured it on us, they didn't let up, not one moment!!! I don't know how tough the Angels fans are, but I don't think they are as tough as the Dodgers fans!!!
Now, I'm not so inclined to believe that the Yankees can finish them, even though the games are in Yankee Stadium now, we'll see. Until then, enjoy this Championship Week!!!

Thanks Chris. You Dodgers fans are plenty tough yourselves. We threw everything at each other including the kitchen sink, you hung in right in there. Dodgers have been good for years, and their fans support them.
The Yankees are definitely vulnerable, as tonight's game V showed. They have some cracks that can be exploited, I know Charlie Manuel and his staff are going to expose them. Yankees were left low tonight, by a hungry Angels club, who wouldn't quit. Yankees staff is as dominant as they are claiming. We'll see, now it isn't exactly a lock for N.Y. even at Yankee Stadium!! They'll have to live all weekend second guessing themselves until game time Saturday!! I know that feeling, because when you're Dodgers won game II, that was the longest weekend of the season, and you Dodgers fans were pouring it on!! LOL!!!
I have enjoyed battling, talking baseball, checking the games, giving input during the games, it was fun!!
I think you were our greatest nemesis, it was so funny!! You'd come on the Phillies blog with your stuff, and we would respond, and you'd come right back, it was so funny.
Your Dodgers got a good club, I wouldn't expect anything less than them improving, somehow getting the peices that they need, and coming back for more. So, it's no doubt that we'll probably be battling again this time next season!! Until then, keep swinging!! LOL!!! Now, we have to keep the trophy in the National League.

Well, we knew this was coming, huh? Yankees aren't even in yet and the fans are talking about how they're going to beat the Phillies in 5. Yeah, we'll see, they still have to get past a tough Angels team.
Chris C, I'm pulling for the Angels now, just because I'd rather talk baseball with the likes of you, Nightwing, bendgod, KingPaddy, etc. and not have to deal with the obnoxious Yanks fans who are already getting on my nerves before the series starts. And your Dodgers put up a hell of a fight last night, despite the lopsided score, there were times that I was thinking how easily they could be back in it. Great season for the Dodgers and their fans. What do you say, same time next year?
GO PHILS!!

It seems that the Phillie fans are a tag insecure. You won the League Championship Series Dudes, and now you get to face the Yankees or the Angels. You have to win that best of seven too. It is not that the Phillies are a dynasty franchise like the Yankees, Steelers, or the Packers of days gone by.
We will let that series be played before we announce an official winner.
Be happy with your sucess and be happy it continues, and if Lidge loses a game in closing and the Philly faithful burn his house to the ground...when that is meat of Phillie memories. Would one of you Philly jocks mind dating Tomahawk for a while -- at least date him long enough for his eyes to straighten out.
