ST. LOUIS (AP)—The St. Louis Cardinals are scuffling to the postseason, going 1-6 after clinching the NL Central. It’s hardly a crisis of confidence.

“Yeah, we made some mistakes this whole series,” Albert Pujols(notes) said after the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep with a 9-7, 10-inning victory on Sunday. “Some errors here and there, but listen, this is part of the game.

“I’ll think we’ll be all right.”

Players noted that the Cardinals weren’t alone in taking a collective sigh of relief after clinching. They open the playoffs Wednesday at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Every team is solid, and it seems like every team is kind of struggling coming into the postseason,” shortstop Brendan Ryan(notes) said. “I know it’s two separate things, and everybody’s going to be at their best.”

Prince Fielder(notes) homered twice and Jody Gerut’s(notes) two-out infield hit drove in the go-ahead run for Milwaukee, which swept the Cardinals on the road for the second time this season. The Brewers finished 80-82 hours after Ken Macha learned he’d be back for a second season.

“It’s cool,” Fielder said. “We have a manager we know.”

The Cardinals failed to make it a happy 65th birthday for manager Tony La Russa, who joked before the game that he was looking forward to getting the senior citizen discount at the movie theater.

“We just got swept, you can’t deny that,” La Russa said. “We have a couple of days to get ready, and we’ll play well on Wednesday.”

Fielder ended with 46 homers, one behind Albert Pujols for the major league lead, and drove in three runs to tie Ryan Howard(notes) for the majors’ RBI title at 141. He lost a chance to take the RBI title outright when he drew an intentional walk to load the bases in the 10th.

Mid-game replacement David Freese(notes) had two hits and three RBIs for St. Louis, including a two-run bloop single off Chris Smith(notes) (1-0) to tie it at 6 in the eighth. Freese made his professional debut at catcher in the 10th after the Cardinals pinch-hit for two catchers. Yadier Molina(notes) got a day off to rest a sore knee.

Fielder’s second homer of the game came in the ninth came off Todd Wellemeyer(notes) (7-10). The Cardinals forced extra innings against Trevor Hoffman(notes) (3-2) when Julio Lugo(notes) beat the relay on a potential game-ending double-play ball with the bases loaded.

Ryan Braun added an RBI single in the 10th for the Brewers, finishing with an NL-high 203 hits, and John Axford(notes) finished for his first career save.

Pujols won his first NL homer title and St. Louis’ first since Mark McGwire hit 65 in 1999 despite going without a long ball in his last 79 at-bats since Sept. 9. He led the majors in slugging percentage for the third straight season, finished second to Hanley Ramirez(notes) with a .327 average, and was third with 135 RBIs.

Pujols said he could have hit 50 homers but not if he wanted to bat .330, too.

“Believe me, I can go out there and try to hit the ball out of the park, but that’s being selfish,” Pujols said. “I want to help my team to win and that’s by driving the ball, getting on base and driving it to the gap.”

He got a prolonged standing ovation after setting a major league assists record at first base with 185, which reflects his range at the position.

Joel Pineiro(notes), who’ll start Game 3 of the division series Saturday in St. Louis, allowed three earned runs in five innings. He was 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in his last five starts. Though he allowed 11 homers on the season he gave up four long balls in the last two games.

Jeff Suppan(notes) got a ceremonial 30th start for the Brewers, giving up a run on two hits in two innings. He’s made 30 starts in 11 straight seasons, tied with Livan Hernandez(notes) for the longest streak among active players.

NOTES: Jeff Tweedy of alternative rock band Wilco threw out the first pitch. Tweedy grew up in suburban Belleville, Ill. … Casey McGehee(notes) got an infield hit in the first to raise his average to .301, then was taken out before his next at-bat. … The Brewers, Braves and Phillies are the only teams with winning records at 4-year-old Busch. … Fielder had five multihomer games this season, 17 for his career. … The Cardinals finished with attendance of more than 3.3 million after their 35th sellout. … Hoffman blew four saves in 42 chances, the last two against the Cardinals. … Freese last played catcher at South Alabama in 2006. … Pineiro led the majors with only 1.14 walks per 9 innings.

Too bad the Cubs choked away the season in August.

Had they not this little slump would of definitely been enough.

I've been a Cardinals fan since "46 thru the lean years as well as the good years and I'm still proud of 'em. Win or lose in the playoffs, it's been a fun year which I've enjoyed to the fullest. I don't waste my time hating any other team or player. Hating only breeds misery on the inside. Baseball is business to the owners but to the true baseball fan it's just a game and fun to watch. I enjoy good baseball by any team--and kudos to whoever wins. Only thing I don't look forward to is the season nearing the end. Football and basketball will help endure the winter but baseball is my favorite.

    GO CARDS !!

I really hope these birds wake up in time to play ball? they really look sick at this time and i wonder where that killer team has gone? we just look like we do not belong in the playoffs. somebody better wake up the sleeping lions or it is going to be really to bad. the club oweners did their part now the team needs to pull the right ropes and keep killing the ball. that was something we was doing when matt, john s. mark and lugo came here. we better be ready because the dodgers do not need the cheater to win. he also is in a really bad funk and lets hope he stays there. come on cards lets get our ducks in a row and start make the fans proud again,we do not need a let down we have had that. now lets get ready to kick some butt.

The thing that concerns me is the inability, the Cards have had this year, of getting the 2 out RBI base hit.

Doing so is especially critical in the post season!

and no, marvin, i'm not a rams fan. i'm not from missouri. my dad raised me a cards fan and i really am only a baseball fan, i am a casual watcher of the nfl. but, i did notice that you made several posts on the rams site about a steven jackson, (of whom i know nothing about). of course they were also negative. if you're not a rams fan, which you imply that you're not, why would you feel it necessary to post there? that would pretty much make you the petty schmuck that you try to represent yourself as. your posts never offer any constructive criticism, only criticism.

you are a "living" testament to the pro-kervorkian argument. you have nothing to offer period.

There is so much talk about the heat because it takes our mind off of the Cardinals who suck. Bill DeWitt can take this bunch of jokers back to Cincinatti for all we care. The Washington Nationals have a better hitting team.

these are your words back in june, marvin. it's a thousand wonders a teams that could "suck" so bad has made it this far. so why don't you just assume they lost the division and you can go back to being the miserable, sniveling, whining, crybaby, sissy, bellyaching, moaning, grumbling malcontent that you are.

Marvin, I am a die-hard Cardinal fan. I'm not a fair-weathered punk like you. In 2006 the Cards actually finished the season worse than they did this season, and I bet you were bashing them then too. When they won the WS, however, you probably cheered the loudest. I remember going through the 70's when the Cards never even got close to post season play. I never gave up on them like you. No, there is no way you could be a Cubs fan because, hate them like I do, they are loyal to their team. You are a "I root for whoever is winning" coward. You? A Cardinal fan? Not even maybe. Go away and root for the Brewers...they are on a 3 game winning streak.

wow marvin, those ARE some negative comments. i read them, too and you sure don't sound like you'd be happy if the cardinals were 162-0. the thing i thought was most telling was under your name it shows the first line that you posted from each time you put in your 2 cents worth, and you didn't have to read much more than that to know that you wouldn't be satisfied with a shut-out season.

sounds like if you're a baseball fan, you'd be more happy as a follower of the nats, a team that you say in one post that the cards are like. the nationals need a fanbase and would fit in with your needs (the need to whine and complain needlessly) much more than a team that has such an uncanny ability to win even when they're not supposed to. like kevin said, at the first of this year no one expected us to get close to winning the division. i certainly didn't. so at this point, i'm just going to enjoy the ride.(even if it does end in 3 games)

    Marvin,
I went back and read your last 15 or so posts and if you're a Cards fan, I'll kiss your a$$. Even during the unbelievable run we had from July to September, you're posting doom for the Cardinals. And, before the AS break you are ranting from top to bottom. Frankly, I don't know why you just don't end it all. In one post in Sept. you say that the Cards won't even take the division. That they'll be in a "freefall" after the series with the Cubs and will be "4 and a half games" behind Chicago. So, don't get upset if I don't put any more weight into your prediction now. You're obviously a bitter and angry person. Not one post had anything at all positive to say, even when the birds were riding high and in the middle of one of the greatest winning streaks I can remember in recent history.

So please don't try to convice anyone you know a damn thing except the fact that you're miserable.

Just for the record I despise the Cubs and always will. That doesn't make me blind to the woes of the Cards however. Tony has been in denial the whole last half of the season. If you believe Pujols he could hit homers if he wanted to but was more concerned with winning the triple crown so tried to improve his average for the "good of the team." In his attempt he lost the RBI title, nearly lost the HR title, and never came close to the top average. If, we take him at his word, then he deliberately denied us all those runs his potential HR's would have given us to give us more singles. ??? Does that make sense to anyone? Carp and Wainright are great pitchers but even Koufax couldn't pitch nothing but shutouts so don't expect the series to go more than three games.

I'm a die hard Cards fan since birth. I don't miss a game. I know baseball well and how the game is played. With that said, I am worried about next week very much so. Albert is obviously playing through an injury that is bringing the entire offense down. He is the best player to ever play the game so it doesn't seem logical to move him out of the #3 spot in the post season but I sure hope he wakes up. Carp and Waino are the best pitchers in the game this year, no doubt, but without any run support , even the best pitchers lose. I agree with Paul about Ankiel. He needs to go and it's sad to say because he is a crowd favorite. Unfortunately baseball, like any other sport, is a business and weak performers do not last. I am concerned about all of the bullpen, especially the closer role. We don't have one. Giving Franklin a week off was the worst thing Tony could have done. You have to grind out your weaknesses. He hasn't been the same since and he is finished. I am also concerned about the bench. We don't have one of them either. Glaus? Thurston? Green? Seriously? The bench is what the 06 team had and carried them through the post season. The inability of hitting lefties will hurt us too. I could keep going but will try to focus on the positives because in all honesty, no Cards fan out there really believed deep down inside that we would win the 2009 NL Central, so that in itself is an accomplishment.

Well, well, well..... lets hear from some of the "smart ass" Cardinal fans now. Those who, a few weeks ago when I tried to tell you that at best, without Pujols you were just another average team, .... you had the typical uneducated arrogant comments. I'm visiting in Cardinal country now and can't seem to find the@#$%iness that I found a few weeks ago when I was here. Let see if they can "blow the playoffs" like you blew past those GREAT Pirates, Reds and Brewers the last few series. Wait till next year and have a cold winter! Bye Bye

i've got a feeling that you're a cubs fan in cardinal clothing. that "travest" of a team you talked about, is having a great year and breezed through our division in the 2nd half of the season. a few struggles toward the end of the regular season, but i think we'll take LA in 4. sit back and watch.

and, don't worry, "the cubs will get 'em next year."

    yeah, right!

Nice to end the season with a sweep....and one in which we finished the season series with the Cards at 9=9 (I guess uyou gotta look for the moral victories where you can find 'em).

Well wishes to Jeffree; GSpot; Dan G (Twins fan who'd drop by on occasion); Yanks09; and all the Cardinal fans who exhibited class on the Boards....

In closing--Cardinal fans--I'm not trying to be a smart-apple, but I just can't se how it should irritate some of you when the Brewers untuck their shirt after a win--if the tables were turned, it wouldn't bother me....besides--we're going home and you'e still playing!!.

My sincere very best wishes to the Cards as they take on the Trolley Dodgers!!!!

The biggest question mark going into Game #1 with LA is the mobility of Yadi. I remember a post season when Mike Matheny inexplicably cut his hand so badly he could not play. The Cardinals and especially Rick Ankiel did not do well. Obviously Larue is a veteran and can handle the staff but the team loses a proven run producer with Yadi out of the lineup and the Dodgers poised to start two Lefties against the boys with the birds on the bat.

Marvin? Are you serious? The Cards are an embarrassment to St Louis? You have got to be kidding. The Cardinals are of of the winningest franchises in baseball. Year in and tear out they field competative teams and have a chance at the post season. Hell, in '06 the Cardinals "accidentally" won the World Series and have a better chance than 22 other teams to win it again this season. If anyone is an embarrassment to St Louis, it's you and any fan that agrees with you. If you are embarrassed to be a Cardinal fan, go "wait til next year" with the Cub fans.

Three games seperate the four NL Playoff teams. If anyone actually thinks there is a clear-cut favorite in the four, then they are clueless. Any of the four have a great chance to reach the WS. I'm gunna kick back and enjoy the ride....and if the Cardinals don't win....I won't be embarrassed.

    Sheesh...your a moron, Marvin.

First and foremost if this game had meant anything Wellemeyer wouldn't have been within 100 feet of the pitching mound. This guy is a complete waste of time ala Jason Marquis. Thankfully this will be his last game in a Cardinal uniform. They kept referring to him not being able to find his "slot" to pitch wtf? You have the best pitching coach in the NL and like Jason Marquis he probably never listened to anything Duncan said.

i am concerned about our lack of consistency on defense and the bullpen. The Dodgers have been struggling, but will start two lefthanders against us on the road. In the past postseasons Albert has been way too quiet he needs to wake up and jump start this team.

Ankiel needs to be gone too I have not seen this guy hit anything worthwhile in months-thanks for The Natural moments Rick - you are one hell of fielder, but last I checked they don't have designated centerfielders yet. I am sure his agent will get him millions to hit .235 15 homeruns and 47 rbis in cincy or pittsburgh have a helluva time with that.
