Hoover lifts Phils past Marlins

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Philadelphia’s big sluggers had the day off to rest for the playoffs. The Phillies didn’t miss them in their final postseason tuneup.

With Jimmy Rollins(notes), Ryan Howard(notes) and Chase Utley(notes) all out of the lineup, Paul Hoover(notes) hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning and the defending World Series champions prepared for their title defense with a 7-6 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday.

“Right now, I feel real good about our club,” manager Charlie Manuel said.

Manuel has a couple of pressing issues as the Phillies enter the playoffs for the third straight year. Will he start Cole Hamels(notes) or Cliff Lee(notes) in the postseason opener against Colorado? Use Ryan Madson(notes) or Brad Lidge(notes) as closer? Is J.A. Happ(notes) a starter or reliever?

Manuel will decide soon enough. The Phillies host the Rockies on Wednesday in the opener of their best-of-five division series.

Happ, a 12-game winner, pitched only two innings in his 23rd start of the year. The rookie left-hander struck out 10 and tossed a shutout against the Rockies in July, but has valuable experience and success out of the bullpen.

“I’m not ready to reveal what we’re going to do yet because I’m not sure what we’re going to do,” Manuel said.

Happ has settled into the rotation, but would go back to the bullpen if that’s where he’s needed.

“Hopefully when they know, I’ll know,” he said. “I think we all read a little bit into it. I think I’m going to be available when needed. I don’t know what that means.”

Just one RBI shy of 100, right fielder Jayson Werth(notes) started and went 1 for 4, missing out on the milestone. The crowd erupted in jeers when Werth was intentionally walked with two outs and the winning run on second in the 10th inning.

Howard tied Prince Fielder(notes) for the NL lead with 141 RBIs and was second in homers with 45. Center fielder Shane Victorino(notes) led the league with 13 triples.

A sellout crowd of 45,211 packed Citizens Bank Park for the finale. That brought Philadelphia’s final attendance totals to 73 sellouts and a record 3,600,693 fans.

“We know what we need to do. We got the experience from last year,” Lidge said. “We’re looking good.”

Miguel Cairo(notes) homered for the NL East champions, who finished 45-36 at home. Chad Durbin(notes) (2-2) got the win with one scoreless inning.

“This is when it starts,” Rollins said. “You have to get to the postseason to have that opportunity.”

Hanley Ramirez(notes) got the day off and finished with a .342 average to become the first Marlins player to win a batting title. He also is the first NL shortstop to win the batting title since Dick Groat in 1960.

Marlins left fielder Chris Coghlan(notes) had three hits to bolster his bid for NL Rookie of the Year. His 113 hits after the All-Star break tied with Juan Pierre(notes) (2004) and Bill Buckner (1980) for the most in the last 45 years.

The Marlins went 87-75 under third-year manager Fredi Gonzalez. While Gonzalez was widely praised for keeping the Marlins in wild-card contention until the final weeks with the lowest payroll in baseball, he was forced to respond to a story saying the team may replace him.

“We all have bosses. We’ll just keep going forward,” Gonzalez said.

ESPN.com reported former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, who recently ended a six-year run as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League, is in talks about taking a position with the Marlins.

“As we looked at the performance at things that happened, games that went one way, games that went another way, there is no question we felt we should have been a playoff team,” Marlins president David Samson said.

Dan Meyer(notes) (3-2) took the loss for the Marlins, who finished with a winning record for only the sixth time in franchise history. The Marlins went 84-77 last season.

The Phillies (93-69) will open the postseason at home for the third consecutive year. They lost in the division series to Colorado in 2007 and kicked off their run to the championship last season—they were 92-70—by eliminating Milwaukee.

It’s the Rockies again standing in their way.

“Last year, we thought, ‘OK we were there last year,”’ Victorino said. “Now, we just have to go out and play. That’s what it’s going to be like this year. We’re the world champs.”

NOTES: Phillies CF Ben Francisco(notes) was caught stealing three times. He was nailed at third for the second out in the ninth inning. … Werth’s 20th stolen base gave the Phillies three members of the 20-20 club, along with Rollins and Utley. … Ramirez (106), Jorge Cantu(notes) (100), Dan Uggla(notes) (90) and Cody Ross(notes) (90) gave the Marlins four players with 90-plus RBIs for the first time in team history.

Not sure how Charlie is going to do it, but nothing will surprise me, and my theory is one that I havent heard, but yet think it is possible, albeit slim.

As for when the games are, with my crazy work schedule, I could catch some of the Wednesday and all of Thursday.... but I cut my cable YEARS ago and I dont get TBS...... Im bummed they arent on FOX....

Ill be listening on 1150 WDEL.... with me being 5 miles from the PA/DE border, I get the Delaware station in better......

    Dr. O,

I'd be shocked if Charlie went with a 3 man rotation - just doesn't seem to be his style. I think we'll see Lee/Hamels/Blanton/Happ, with Pedro as your long man. If they advance, I think Pedro and Happ will flip-flop roles.

I'm disappointed that they are on in the afternoon for both of the first two games (I assumed they'd have one afternoon, one night game). It sucks how work can get in the way of this stuff.

    GO PHILS!!!

I could see Charlie going with a 3 man rotation for the first round.

    Game 1 Lee
    Game 2 Hamels
    Game 3 Happ
*Game 4 Lee (3 days rest)
*Game 5 Hamels (4 days rest)

    * if needed

IF it went all 5 and the Phillies advance, Lee would not be ready until game 2, Hamels game 3, so either Happ, Pedro, or Blanton would have to go game 1. IF it went 4, Hamels could then start game 1, Lee game 2 and whomever game 3.

According to TBS the Phils are the Not Ready For Prime Time Players. Can you believe these game times?Aside from that,Charlie HAS to start J A Happ, looking at the Rocks record against lefties. And the Phils have got to do something about the LOB problem-or it will be a short season. From a survivor of 1964 who is enjoying every bit of this success-GO PHILLIES

Has anyone noticed how long it took the Jays to fire Ricciardi? I don't think two breaths were taken at the end when the word came out. Knew his days were numbered after he jerked their best pitcher around (not to mention the Phils and other suiters, as well as the Jays' fans) and ruined his and that team's season. It'll be interesting to see what position the Jays take regarding Halladay with new front office leadership. Doesn't much matter, though, because I can't see Halladay ever resigning with this club. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The inevitable has happened.

hopefully colorado wont get hot, like 2 years ago.
hopefully there is soemthing left in lee and hamels arms
chas may want to think about pulling every starter after 5 innings, as no one has been able to do that.
    go phils.
i'm just glad you made it to the playoffs again, and didn't go from world champs to world chumps in 1 season.

Ben Francisco might have a nice bat but when it comes to baserunning, he is totally brain dead.. Hey Ben, this is not Cleveland.. Wake up.. Phillies better get some pitchers to wake up also.. The entire pitching staff has gone totally sour in last 2 weeks. If they lose game 1, look for a 3 game sweep.

I found the answer to my own question. In MLB history only one person has been thrown out more times then Ben Francisco was today. Not sure who did it but the record is four.

Does anyone know the record for times caught stealing in a single game? What a horrible performance by Ben Francisco - three caught stealings in one day and two of them killed rallies.

PHILLIES world series hopes looking bleak, last year at this time they were riding a wave of momentum. great pitching, great hitting, solid bullpen and clicking on all cylinders. what a difference a year makes! From a gambling standpoint the "smart money" would not be put on the PHILLIES......

Yeah Werth was shootin for 100 RBI's and had a last shot at it in the 10th when Gonzalez intentionally walked him. Did anyone notice the smirk on his face as Werth was being walked? Real bush-league Freddy! Hoover came through though and good for him. If he does nothing else in his Major League career he'll have that (and gettin the snot kicked out of him by the other players!) as a pretty cool memory. Glad it was Wes "suckbucket" Helms who couldn't make the play at third. Never could come through in the clutch.

I know that the Phillies have something to give the Rockies because of what happened to them in 2007, but the way they have been pitching and hitting, they worry me. The Rockies are hot, hopefully our boys can cool them off. Go Phillies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor Werth, was going for 100 RBI's and couldnt get it....

I have no problem with Latin American Catholics making the sign of the cross. They aren't doing that for you pal. They don't care whether you see them or not. A person has to ask why do you care? This is a baseball blog ya fruitcake. Join Godhaters anonymous or something. Tell your shrink God bothers you. And quit ripping America. Most of us normal people lost grandparents , parents, or loved ones somewhere along the line. And they died so idiots like you could blog your foolish nonsense. Who lets these people out of high school to roam the streets???

Ollie, Cholly finally listened. If it isn't Yankee fans it's weirdos infecting the blog...

    Catch you Wednesday fellas,

With Cole only tossing 47 pitches, they could go with him game 1 on ''3 days rest", but I think they will stick to having Lee go game 1 and Cole game 2. With game 3 being Saturday, Happ would be ready to go game 3...... He pitched well against the Rockies this year and Colorado has problems with lefties.....

    Go Phillies!
