SAN DIEGO (AP)—Barry Zito’s(notes) season ended when he was hit by a line drive in the sixth inning Friday night, leaving him with a bruised left forearm.

“It didn’t feel good,” Zito said after his San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 7-2, although he didn’t figure in the decision. “That was as hard as it could be hit. The baseball gods did me good tonight. I didn’t die, I didn’t break.”

X-rays were negative.

“He took a good shot there,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “There was no way he could have continued.”

Zito was hit by a line drive by Adrian Gonzalez(notes). He grimaced and didn’t go after the ball, which landed between the mound and third base. He was checked by a trainer and immediately left the game, which was tied at 1.

It was only the second time Zito lasted past the fifth inning in his last six starts. At 10-13, he finished with a losing record for the third straight season since signing a $126 million, seven-year deal with the Giants.

“I think the numbers are not indicative of how he threw the ball,” Bochy said. “If you look at run support he had, you can see why he didn’t get quite the wins he could have.”

Zito is winless in his last seven starts against San Diego, including 0-4 in six this season. The lefty allowed one run and three hits in 5 1-3 innings, struck out six and walked two. Brandon Medders(notes) (5-1) got the last two outs of the sixth.

“He finished up on a good note,” Bochy said. “He threw the ball well. it’s too bad we couldn’t him a win.”

Also Friday, Kevin Towers, the longest-tenured general manager in the major leagues, was fired by the Padres, a person familiar with the situation said. The Padres said only that CEO Jeff Moorad will address the media on Saturday afternoon.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club hadn’t made an announcement.

Pablo Sandoval(notes) and Juan Uribe(notes) hit solo homers for the Giants, both off former Giants pitcher Kevin Correia(notes) (12-11). Sandoval homered just inside the foul pole in right field leading off the fourth, his 24th. Uribe’s homer leading off the seventh inning went an estimated 437 feet and over the Padres’ bullpen beyond center field. It was his 16th.

Coming in, the Giants had been 0-6 at Petco Park this season, scoring just 11 runs with one homer.

The Giants, eliminated from the wild-card race on Wednesday night, scored six runs in the seventh inning, aided by two errors by shortstop Everth Cabrera(notes). Four of the runs were unearned. Cabrera had both a fielding error and a throwing error.

Henry Blanco(notes) homered for the Padres in the seventh, his sixth.

Correia allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in six-plus innings. The first four batters reached against Correia in the seventh before he was pulled.

“Actually it was a great pitching duel as it moved forward,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “Unfortunately Barry took one off the left arm. Kevin pitched great through six. He got some pitches up in the seventh inning that they took advantage of.”

NOTES: Sandoval was 2 for 24 (.083) at Petco Park this season before his homer. … Correia finished the year with career highs in wins (12), losses (11) and innings (198).

All of your guy's suggestions are RIDICULES!!!!!!!!!!
Will Clark as hitting coach and vizquel as manager never in a million years will it happend.
ok this is what is probably gonna happen this off-season
lincecum gets signed to long term deal for like 100milliom for like 7-10 years maybe 5.
and maybe a small little bat and some bull pen pitchers and thats it and maybe bring begie back.
he deserves to stay one more year so he can mentor posey for a year it would be a smart thing to do
and keep uribe that guy has a bat he can fit in with the giants for another season.
giants would keep penny bt he will be to much money adn the giants seem like they are gonna kepp freddy sanchez for another year so that takes more money and jonathan sanchez probably wont get traded cause we kinda need him and garko is gone but that's what i think is gonna happen

my 2010 prodiction for opening day
    line-up
    1.Eugenio Velez
    2.Freddy Sanchez?
    3.Pablo Sandoval
    4.Bengie Molina?

Do Not count on the correct moves being made to step this team up during the off season. Why shouldn't the questionable decision making process continue ? Why does anyone think that all of a sudden, there will be an abrupt change from the patterns of the past. Don't get your "whatever" up for next year, people. After "they" ( supposedly ) extend Timmy, Matty, Panda Man, Wilson, and adding the existing sickening moves of the past ( Zit, RoLand, For Rent ) Mr. Bow Tie Daddy isn't going to part with shiP ! ( not a type-O ) He won't do it. There will be the usual BS about building within the system.

The Giants need a couple of impact hitters. Get Freddy healthy and keep Penny. Management has to see that now is the time to strike, this window won't last forever. GET SOME DAMN BATS!

The article gives an inaccurate description of Zito's season. Zito finished with an ERA under 3 in 15 starts after the all-star break. Last few were iffy but he kept earned runs at 3 or under almost always. One of the top 10 pitchers in majors since July.

What do the loyal fans do about the Giants? I think most of us agree that we need new blood on the team, in the form of NEW MANAGEMENT! We could also use a few guys that can hit a baseball with power and do it day after day. I really think that we are trying to pass our opinions on to the Owner, but does he care enough about us to listen?
Just like the Chicago fans have gotten used to hearing, "There's always next year!"

Brian Sabean & Bruce Bochy signing extensions????? You gotta be kidding me!!! is it me or do we have the worst owners in professional sports in the bay area? I mean where do i start? From the Giants with really having no balls to sign any big time hitters, the Oakland A's just prepping players for other teams, the Warriors who can't keep any good players, and of course our favorite of them all Al from the( dinosaur era Davis), now he's form another planet!!! such lucky sports fans we are here in the bay!

Every body chucking on Zito, hell if he was with the Yankees he would have second best era on the team, maybe it's more about run support (of course) then his pitching.

San Francisco, I look forward to the 2010 season. I am confident y'all will continue to improve as y'all have demonstrated in 2009 and obtain the personnel during the off season that will aid in your quest for a 2010 world championship. Thank's for playing great baseball.

Even if Zito gets shelled and finishes at 10-14 he still pitches a load better than he sings! Keep Barry pitching, the world can bare that disappointment easier than listen to his pathetic creepy singing.
