Halladay’s 3-hitter leads Jays over Boston 12-0

BOSTON (AP)—Roy Halladay(notes) keeps showing the Blue Jays what they’ll be missing if they trade him.

The big name on the market at the non-waiver deadline two months ago, Halladay wrapped up his season—and perhaps his tenure with Toronto—by throwing a three-hitter for his second consecutive shutout in a 12-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Now, he’ll go into the offseason wondering whether the Blue Jays will try to trade him with one year left on his contract. Halladay, the 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner, would have to accept any deal.

“I think there’s going to be a little of that just because of the things that happened earlier in the year,” Halladay said. “For the most part, a lot of it will be out of my hands. You never want to be in that uncertainty, but you do the best you can with the situation and move on.”

The Blue Jays entertained offers for Halladay (17-10) before the July 31 deadline but held onto him.

In his last six starts, he had three shutouts, four complete games and a 1.47 ERA.

“It’s obviously a nice way to finish,” Halladay said. “It’s fun when you get runs like that. It takes a lot of the pressure off.”

The Blue Jays hit four homers—two by Randy Ruiz(notes) and one each by Lyle Overbay(notes) and Jose Bautista(notes)—one day after hitting six. They have 46 in September, two shy of the team record for any month set in June 2000.

They won their season-high sixth straight game, while the Red Sox matched their season high six-game losing streak. Boston started only two regulars after clinching the AL wild card late Tuesday night.

The Red Sox were hitless until Joey Gathright’s(notes) clean single to left with one out in the sixth. Rocco Baldelli(notes) singled in the seventh and Gathright added an infield single in the eighth.

“Halladay’s tough every night,” Baldelli said. “Even when you score a couple of runs off of Halladay, that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a good day. That just means you got lucky.”

One night earlier, Boston lost 8-7 to Toronto but locked up a postseason berth less than three hours later when Texas lost to the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox celebrated in their clubhouse after clinching, despite their own loss.

“It’s not going to affect next week” when they play the Angels in the AL division series, Boston manager Terry Francona said of Wednesday’s loss. “Still, terrible night.”

The Blue Jays won’t be playing next week.

“The guys are swinging the bats like we started the season off,” manager Cito Gaston said. “I hope we go out and go home with something positive to take home and bring back next year.”

Five days after blanking Seattle on seven hits, Halladay pitched his fourth shutout this season and ninth complete game, both major league highs. He struck out six, walked two and hit designated hitter David Ortiz(notes) with a pitch. Boston’s other regular in the lineup was shortstop Alex Gonzalez, and he came out after six innings even though he wasn’t hurt.

Boston catcher Dusty Brown(notes) made his first major league pitching appearance in the ninth and allowed one run. Two other Red Sox position players, outfielder Jonathan Van Every(notes) and shortstop Nick Green(notes), pitched this year.

“We kind of had all our reserve players already in the game,” said Brown, the closer in 2001 at Yavapai Community College in Arizona. “I was the last guy left and I don’t think they were going to throw (Dustin) Pedroia out there to possibly get hurt.”

The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring groundout by Bautista and an RBI single by Aaron Hill(notes). They made it 5-0 in the third on a Overbay’s two-run homer, his 16th of the year, and Ruiz’s solo shot.

Tim Wakefield(notes) (11-5) left after three innings and fell to 7-1 at Fenway Park.

Fernando Cabrera(notes) allowed the first three batters to reach base in the fifth, including John McDonald(notes), who singled in a run. Dustin Richardson(notes) then gave up Bautista’s sacrifice fly and Hill’s RBI single that made it 8-0.

Toronto scored twice in the sixth off Manny Delcarmen(notes) on Ruiz’s eighth homer and McDonald’s single after Travis Snider’s(notes) triple. Bautista homered in the eighth off Hideki Okajima(notes).

NOTES: Baldelli made his first infield appearance in the majors when he moved from right field to third base in the top of the seventh for the Red Sox. … Halladay improved to 6-9 at Fenway Park. … Bautista homered in his third straight game.

To RonH. It is obvious you missed the point so I won't argue a point that is perfectly clear. Note: spelling-- "ignorant" Blessings, D.T.

You need to read your own comment. You said "At least this game should be played like spring training games where the "regulars" at least play three innings."

With your vast baseball back ground you should know that spring training games have no such 3 inning rule for regulars. In fact, many regulars don't play in a game at all that people pay to see. They have split squad games played in different places on the same day, etc. The point is, THERE IS NO SUCH RULE. Why do you keep posting? Do you like to look ingnorant?

To 101 Ron H, If you read my comment you would observe that I said"regulars play at least three innings" not "have" to play three innings. Secondly, I have more experience in baseball as coach, and player in high school and college and Yes, I did play Little League. D.T.

Would it have been better to take them the night before when the regular team played and the losing effort ended with Youkilis taking the called strike three with the bat on his shoulders? But you did clinch. Nice.

Spring training where the regulars have to play at least three innings??? You must be thinking of little league games. Have you ever seen a baseball up close??

To all those Dads who took their kids to last nights game in Boston you should be outraged by the lineup put on the field by the Sox. Big Papi and Wakefield, c'mon!! At least this game should be played like a spring training game where the "regulars" at least play three innings. I'm a diehard Sox fan but I would be severely cheated Wednesday night. D.T.

I read an article the other day about leading AL Cy Young candidates and Doc wasn't even on the list of potential winners. This is ridiculous.

He is first in MLB, not just the AL in CG
He is first in MLB in SO
He is first in MLB in IP
He is third in AL in ERA
He is fifth in AL in Ks
    He is fourth in Ws

Come on..,this guy has Cy Young winner written all over him. And he has done this on a team that is currently 9 games under .500.

Andrew is forgetting we had Chin Mein Wang, Arod, Gardner, Marte, Nady, Damon, Bruney, etc. All in the injury list at one point for a long period of time. Then, we had Posada injured.
So what are you talking about?
You guys had Beckett, Lester, Bucholz, Penny, Smoltz with no injuries.
We had CC, Burnett, Pettite, Joba and no 5th starter but rather rotating people from the bullpen.
Keep the excuses to yourself. Penny and Smoltz did not deliver. Or are we forgetting how you guys kept trashtalking when you won 8 in a row against us and thinking the whole world was beneath you?
I can even name a few of the people who are saying "great post" by you.
Is it our fault Varitek, Ortiz, Drew, Penny, Smoltz, Matsuzaka are having pretty poor years?

It seems to me that the Red Sox need to be motivated by this current losing streak. Unlike New York, they have had their struggls consistently all season long: Ortiz having a nothing year until the middle of the season, Wakefield and Matsuzaka out for a while, and yet the Red Sox have 90+ wins and are in the postseason again. What problems have the Yankees had to deal with? A-Rod out for the first quarter of the year? Of course they have 102 wins...they are the Dream Team of the MLB. Every year, they are going to be contenders. There is no escaping that.

However, my point is this: every year that Boston has made it into the postseason, they have fought hard and they have played well. Currently, Boston's rotation is as follows: Beckett with sixteen wins, Buchholz with seven, Lester with fourteen, and Matsuzaka with three, going 2-1 in his last three starts, with his only loss a "good" one, giving up only a solo shot to Cano in the sixth on Saturday.

True, they have played like crap the past few days, but I watched the game versus the Yankees on Saturday and despite their 3-0 loss, they played their hearts out. Did any of the Yankee fans notice that they had bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and yet Boston was able to get out of that jam undamaged, especially with Victor Martinez' amazing effort to get back to home plate to tag out the runner?

This Red Sox team is not done yet. They will be ready for the Angels come next week, and if they do play the Yankees in the ALCS, then there will be more of a tango than there ever was in 2004. Unlike the delusions in many of the Yankees' fans heads that Boston will simply give up, roll over and die, they are sorely mistaken.

I am ready and I wear my Red Sox hat every day with pride, whether they win or lose.

Oh, and by the way, I do believe that Zack Greinke deserves to win the Cy Young award much more than C.C. Sabathia does simply because he plays for a much weaker team, he has sixteen victories, an almost God-like ERA (2.06), and has battled through a serious mental disease. On the other hand, Sabathia is basically given his wins, his ERA is almost a run and a half higher than Greinke's, and he gets a lot more run support.

So, it just goes to show that here is one Red Sox fan, like many others, who are not stuck up and all haughty (like many Yankee fans) who appreciate the game of baseball and many of its components, teams and players as well as their own, unlike what it seems to be the majority of Yankee fans who believe that every player, team, or whatever, if they are not New York, should have their butts kissed.

Go Red Sox and Go Greinke.

I'm still waiting for that ortiz curse to take affect from his jersey being buried in the new stadium.

by the way GMAN please lose them all because that is great for a teams psyche to go into the playoffs losing 10 in a row. The problem is that no matter what your batting lineup was the sox have still been putting their pitchers that will be on the roster in there, and they haven't done sh*t. Your era has ballooned to 7th in the AL while the yankee's has fallen to 3rd.
