Yankees clinch AL East, home field thru postseason

NEW YORK (AP)—Soaked to the skin with champagne, Mark Teixeira(notes) stood on the giant “NY” logo in the Yankees clubhouse and shouted like crazy.

“Tastes good!” he hollered.

Favored to win the World Series since opening day, the New York Yankees celebrated like playoff newcomers after beating Boston 4-2 Sunday to clinch the AL East title and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Absent from the playoffs last season, the Yankees put a bow on this title with their major league-leading 100th win.

“Everything is clicking right now,” winning pitcher Andy Pettitte(notes) said. “When you miss out, it makes you a little more hungry to get back there.”

Maybe that’s why Derek Jeter(notes), Mariano Rivera(notes) and a roomful of All-Star multimillionaires went wild, chanting and jumping and spraying each other with bubbly. Teixeira and many others wore goggles to stave off the sting—of victory, that is.

“I think the way last year ended left a bad taste in all our mouths,” manager Joe Girardi said. “There’s a lot of excitement. This has been a fun group, and they enjoy it.”

Hideki Matsui’s(notes) go-ahead single in the sixth inning energized the damp fans and put them on notice that a party was coming. The first real bash at the new Yankee Stadium began with a most familiar scene—Rivera on the mound, closing out another clincher.

Catcher Jose Molina(notes) leaped up from behind the plate even before Rivera had fielded Jacoby Ellsbury’s(notes) soft comebacker for the final out. The Yankees swarmed Rivera on the first-base side of the mound while players in the bullpen streamed in.

Nick Swisher(notes) wasted no time putting on an AL East Champions hat. The crowd responded with a standing ovation as the Yankees began walking off the field, with Jeter at the front and several teammates pulling on gray championship T-shirts.

“Winning a championship is what I came here for,” pitcher CC Sabathia(notes) said. “It definitely feels good—first one in pinstripes, first one in the new stadium, first celebration.”

The three-game sweep extended the Yankees’ winning streak to five. They finished 9-9 against Boston this year, surprising since New York lost the first eight matchups.

“We’re going to see them again down the road, we have a feeling,” slugger Alex Rodriguez(notes) said.

Despite the defeat, the Red Sox remain in firm control of the wild-card race. Their magic number is two to beat out Texas for the final playoff spot.

“Hope we win tomorrow,” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “That’s normally what we do. Play. If you win, move on. If you lose, learn and move on. That’s what our next chore will be.”

Still to be determined is who New York will meet in the best-of-five opening round, and when. The Yankees will most likely face the AL Central winner, either Detroit or Minnesota.

Once all the playoff teams are determined, the Yankees will get 1 hour to decide which playoff schedule they prefer. They can choose to start on either Oct. 7 or Oct. 8; the earlier start date includes a day off between the first two games.

Boosted by newcomers such as Teixeira, Sabathia and Swisher, the Yankees won their first division title since 2006. They drenched the high-tech clubhouse, with plastic sheets preventing the computer screens at every stall from getting doused.

All alone in first place since July 21, the Yankees can now spend the final week resting players and setting up the playoff rotation.

“I like this team here,” Jeter said.

Pettitte (14-7) outpitched Paul Byrd(notes) (1-3), and Rivera finished for his 44th save in 46 chances.

Boston put two runners on base in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Victor Martinez’s(notes) 25-game hitting streak ended when his grounder was ruled an error on second baseman Robinson Cano(notes).

“Hard work, determination and a bunch of great attitudes, when you put that all together you accomplish a lot of things,” Rivera said.

After a 63-minute rain delay at the outset, the Yankees beat Boston for the seventh straight time at home.

Matsui met Red Sox reliever Takashi Saito(notes) with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth barely in front of right fielder J.D. Drew’s(notes) dive. Teixeira’s solo homer in the eighth provided insurance.

“This team is so talented, this team has so many weapons,” Teixeira said. “Hopefully, there are a few more celebrations.”

Cautioned catcher Jorge Posada(notes): “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Right now we’re very happy with what we’ve done. Maybe we can do a little more later.”

NOTES: Cano singled for his 200th hit this year. He joined Jeter as the only second base-shortstop teammate tandem to reach the mark in the same season, the Elias Sports Bureau said. … The Yankees won their 16th division title since 1969, matching Atlanta’s mark. … Posada sat out again because of muscle spasms near his neck. He’s feeling better. … Boston LHP Jon Lester(notes), hit near the right knee by a line drive Friday night, continued to improve. He might skip a throwing session this week, but remains on schedule for his next start.

Things have definitely changed...as a YANKEE fan I am so looking forward to the playoffs. After this past weekend, Boston I am not so worried about but the Angels? I can only hope that the Rally Monkey gets spank a little too hard before each game! That should take the energy out of them - they will be the Yanks only nemisis. Have to get by the Halos to have any hope of winning the World Series. Love to our Yankees!!!!!

One league having the DH, and the other not having it, is beyond ridiculous.
It's a complete disadvantage to American League teams, both in the World Series, losing it in NL parks, and in inter-league play, for the same reason.
How this has been in place since "74 is beyond me.
Agree on having it, or getting rid of it, which is my preference.

One last point on the Wild Card. It pushes the World Series later in the year. Remember the weather last year in Philly for the WS? How about if this year it's St. Louis and Detroit? The weather could be real ugly. The Boy's of Summer??

    John

It's not about the Red Sox, I don't like the Wild Card or the DH. Think about it, A team plays 162 games, wins the division then loses a short series to a wild card winner. The Wild Card is for the owners to get more games, more money. I would say the same thing if the Yankees won the wild card.

The DH is even worse. The N.L doesn't have it but the A.L. does. It changes how games are managed because the pinch hitter comes into play more. If the A.L. plays in a N.L park the pitcher has to hit. Even though they don't hit all year.

Anyhow, I hope Josh Beckett is OK. I knew something was wrong with him. He's too good to be pitching the way he has been. The last real good start was in N.Y. when he dueled CC.

Wild card sucks! It's a second chance for loseres. If you play 162 games and can't win division, go home.

Josh Beckett scratched tonight with back spasms.

The wild card is so teams like the Red Sox for instance, with the 3rd best record in baseball, do not miss the playoffs and provide exciting and entertaining games.....If no wild card, then why don't they just take the best records? The wild card allows the best teams to make the playoffs. As seen in the past, there have been a few WS winners from a wild card position.

The wild card, like everything else Baseball does, including the DH, is about money.
How do we keep fans, in cities that have no chance of winning the division, spending their money.
That's why MLB turned it's back on the PED issue-it was bringing baseball back from the insanity of the '94 strike. MLB loved the so-called "chase" because it has made baseball, in most cities, more profitable than ever.
Without the wild card, a lot of people would be watching nothing but football, while waiting for Hockey and basketball to rev up.

What is going on John S? Everyone in the northeast is dying to see the Yankees and Red Sox in the ALCS like in 03 and 04. We will see what happens, Angels and Tigers are not an easy match up for anyone. I come from a family full of Yankees fans and my gf is a Yankees fan but I am a Red Sox fan and we all love and respect each other. People need to learn to love the best riv in all of sports. Peace.

I'd like to see the Red Sox get past the Angels to face the Yanks in the ALCS but I don't see it happening... Boston's newest weakness is their innability to stop guys on the base-paths... The Angels have the 2nd most steals in the AL and for good reason... Figgins and Abreu have had fantastic and ressurgent years and are probobly going to make Varitek and Martinez lose their minds... I think Boston's pitching has more potential but Beckett has been shaky for a few weeks now and even if the X-rays were negative on Lester's knee, noone should take a shot like that and feel good a week or 2 later, who knows he might be great tho... I think the offenses are pretty evenly matched, Boston power vs Angels contact... I think it'll be a fun series but I'm thinking Angels in 5 because of the home field advantage...
