Yankees clinch playoff berth, beat Angels 6-5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—No champagne. No plastic sheets on the lockers. Just a few handshakes and hugs on the field.

Although the Yankees secured their return to the playoffs Tuesday night after a year away that sometimes felt like an eternity, they haven’t forgotten which clinchers really matter.

Brett Gardner(notes) scored the tiebreaking run on Alex Rodriguez’s(notes) sacrifice fly in the ninth, and the Yankees got ready for their 14th playoff appearance in 15 seasons Tuesday night with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs before Mariano Rivera(notes) earned his 41st save for the Yankees, who were guaranteed a return to the postseason about 55 minutes before the last out in Anaheim when Oakland beat the Texas Rangers 9-1.

“I wish we could be a bit happier, but we’re still out there trying to win,” Johnny Damon(notes) said. “We didn’t want to back into the playoffs, though. It’s good that we sealed our own fate.”

With one formality aside, the AL-leading Yankees already were thinking about what else is available to them. The win gave New York a six-game lead over Boston in the East and a 5 1/2 -game edge on the Angels for homefield advantage at the new Yankee Stadium throughout the postseason.

“The division is very important to us,” said Mark Teixeira(notes), who made the postseason with the Angels last year. “You don’t see any champagne tonight, but hopefully in a couple of days you will.”

The Yankees blew a 5-0 lead before rallying to win for the first time in five games this season at Angel Stadium, where they’ve still lost 18 of 24. Phil Hughes(notes) (8-3) allowed the Angels’ tying, unearned run in the eighth on Maicer Izturis’(notes) RBI single.

Derek Jeter(notes) and his teammates are back in the postseason after staying home last fall in manager Joe Girardi’s debut campaign. The Yankees won 17 playoff series and four World Series titles in a 13-year span after 1994, but New York hasn’t won a championship since 2000 or even a playoff series since the 2004 division series, losing four straight.

With a weekend home series looming against the Red Sox, Jeter knows the Yankees will benefit from a difficult win in Anaheim over a team that has beaten them down over the past few years. New York has lost 18 of 24 at Angel Stadium.

“It’s still to early to talk about (playoff) matchups, but it’s important to win against good teams,” said Jeter, who set a major league record for shortstops with his seventh 200-hit season.

Chone Figgins(notes) homered for the Angels, who had won four of five. Los Angeles still has a 7 1/2 -game lead on the Rangers in the AL West, but its magic number stayed at six for clinching its third straight division title.

“We battled back against some good pitching, and that’s very encouraging,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “We had a lot of opportunities and had the right guys up there, but those guys made some pitches. We needed that one hit to turn it our way, but we couldn’t get it.”

The Yankees took a five-run lead in the fifth inning after early homers from Rodriguez, Jorge Posada(notes) and Hideki Matsui(notes), but Los Angeles chipped away with several typical small-ball rallies, tying it when Izturis drove home Howie Kendrick(notes) with a single over the drawn-in infield in the eighth.

Gardner led off the ninth with a single and stole second on a pitchout, thanks to a poor throw by fourth-string Angels catcher Ryan Budde(notes). After Matt Palmer(notes) (10-2) walked Jeter, and Damon put down a sacrifice bunt, Teixeira got an intentional walk from Darren Oliver(notes) to load the bases with one out—and Rodriguez’s drive to center was deep enough to get Gardner home.

“We were down five runs, but we came back and made it a baseball game,” said Torii Hunter(notes), who went 0 for 5 and couldn’t throw out Gardner at the plate. “It was a very exciting game. I didn’t show up, but I had a lot of fun watching it.”

Rivera’s streak of 36 consecutive saves ended last Friday in Seattle with only his second blown save of the year, but Posada threw out pinch-runner Reggie Willits(notes) trying to steal second base after Juan Rivera(notes) struck out in the ninth.

The Yankees hit their homers off Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana(notes), who yielded nine hits in six innings. The Dominican right-hander’s latest inconsistent outing probably guaranteed Scioscia will leave him out of the Angels’ playoff rotation.

Chad Gaudin(notes) started strong before fading in the fifth inning for the Yankees, who have won each of his five starts since he arrived last month in a trade with San Diego.

NOTES: Jeter’s fourth-inning single clinched his latest 200-hit season. He’s one shy of breaking the club record for 200-hit seasons held by Lou Gehrig, who was passed by Jeter as the Yankees’ career hits leader 11 days earlier. … Rodriguez is three homers behind Mark McGwire for eighth place on baseball’s career list. … Gaudin hasn’t received a decision in any of his five starts with New York.

$60 was for a hotel in CT, and if you had any commen sense you would try orbitz, priceline, or hotels before you book. Much better deals. Obviously if you thought I was a hoot you must have been in there.

    Wayne,
I love NYC...it is a great city!! I have been there twice and really enjoyed myself!!! I love it that your fans are as passionate about your club as we are of ours. You were well represented at the game last night, and it was great to see that we could come together and cheer on our respective teams (except for my friend that flipped me off when we came back and tied the game) LOL And I would be PROUD to wear my Angels hat at a Yankee game....I think (most) of your fans would respect that!!!
    GO ANGELS!!!!

GO HALOS....the game starts in one hour WOO HOO

I am buying a package to Yankees next year. $288 for 2 seats to 12 Saturday games. the ones I won't go to I can sell and probably recoup most of my money. You want to come sit in the bleachers with that Angels hat on you let me know.

@Wayne Wow looks like you really did your homework on how much it would cost to see a game. I'll do mine:
Riding my new Beach Cruiser on the bike trail to Angels Stadium on a beautiful sunny day - zero
    Parking - zero
Getting a seat in the "fun" section under the shade - $9.00 (or less)

A bottle of water - $4.00 (yah I know so overpriced)

Isn't Baseball great!!!! Gotta love ALL the fans from ALL the teams. Like I said before, if we all were for the same team, wouldn't life be so boring???

    Good luck to ya all

    GO ANGELS!!!!!!!!!

    GO HALOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Home field advantage in the playoffs doesn't really matter much to the Angels or the Yankees. Both teams play very well on the road, the Yankees are 11 games over .500 and the Angels are 12, and neither team fears going into hostile territory. With the balanced L/R/S lineup of both teams, the short porch in right at Yankee stadium is fairly neutralized and Angels stadium is the most balanced hitters/pitchers park in baseball. The difference is the fans. Yankees fans are loud in NY and even to some degree in Anaheim, but Angels fans can hold their own and support their team.

I look forward to meeting the Yankees in the LCS. They are a good team and it will be fun.

And btw, I have a question for you Yankees fans. Assuming Detroit plays like a team from the central division, who would you rather play in the LCS, the Angels or the Red Sox?

Keith I have no problem with the Angels. I remember rooting for them the last time you won the championship. Of course that was after you took the Yankees out. So do me a favor. Knock the Sh*t out of the Sux in the playoffs. You guys were robbed last wednesday. I would have killed that home plate ump if he would have had to walk thru my club house.

Trip to see the Yankees Red Sox game this Saturday from Portland Maine $60 for 2 tickets(bleachers), $30 for rental car, $40 gas, $20 Parking, $60 Hotel, $10 Tolls, total $220. Watching the Yankees clinch the division over the Sux Priceless.

Trip to Fenway Park earlier this season to see Twins $120 for 2 tickets(bleachers), $20 Gas, $40 parking, $8 tolls total $188. Seeing the Sux lose Priceless.

Point being I can travel 4 hours south have a better time for $32 extra with an over night stay. Basically the cost of the rental car because I have to put it in the shop on Friday. The only overpriced seats in the new Stadium are the corporate seats on the field. How many of you are going to pay the $800 they want at Fenway for those?

Very impressive stats ...not many can match or come close to them....
But Stats don't play the game..players do...and when the playoffs start all teams start off at even....
but since you like stats..heres one for you even the YANKEES can NEVER hold....as of today...the ANGELS hold a 1000% winning record for wins in a World Series...
See stats can be thrown out at will and whoever states them ALWAYS makes their team look the BEST...No one comes here and says "oh ya well my team have never won crap" ..
GO ANGELS GO RED Light up the HALO and win this ring for

You want to talk about chokes lets do it. yes Yankees have the best one for a series in 2004, but since any one can beat anyone on any given day a 7 game series is anyones game. Or should I bring up Buckner? Now a grueling season is a different story. 1978 Sux Choke, 2005 or 2006 going into August with a commanding lead in the division and Sux get swept 5 games in one weekend by the Yankees...Choke, The best almost choke though is 2007 when the Sux had an 18 game lead in June and only won the division by 3. After the Sux won 2 Series in 4 years they were calling themselves a dynasty. SH*T 4 out of 5 and 3 in a row now that is a dynasty!!!!! There has only been 1 repeat series winner between the Yankees '77 '78 and Yankees '98 -'00 and that was Toronto. So until you and your p*ssy teams actually beat the Yankees shut the F*CK UP!!!!!

#245: "spending money like water": When water is used correctly the results are beautiful green fertile fields. When used incorrectly the crops are drowned and laid to waste. Sure the Steinbrenners spend money in order to address the needs of the club but when done correctly the result is a masterpiece like we are witnessing right now. I am sick of hearing people berate the Yankees because their owner does things to field a WINNING team. Yes, tickets cost more and the food costs more but the product is worth watching. I don't really believe that all the owners use the luxury tax money they receive to better their team. If your team's owner is cheap why berate the Yankees? Steinbrenner took a business model and made it work. The Yankees generate significant revenues at home and on the road. As a fan I would not want it any other way.

Again since MLB allowed more teams to play in the playoffs(1969) The Red Sux have won only 6 division titles, and only one of those(2007) was turned into a World Series. if MLB didn't allow the loser teams in it would have taken you 89 years to win that world series. Maybe longer because Theo and Tito would have probably been fired. 13 trips to the playoffs for the SUX since 1969 and 2 world series wins WOW a 15% winner. Who's the choker now? Even Baltimore is 9 trips and 2 World Series in that span of time.
