McCann’s two-run double leads Braves to victory

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Brian McCann(notes) knew he got his pitch. What he didn’t know was how well he hit it.

Brian McCann hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth off closer Ryan Franklin(notes) and the Atlanta Braves held on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Saturday.

“I put together a good at-bat there in the ninth,” McCann said. “I was just trying to get a pitch up in the zone and I hit it a little better and it reached the wall.”

Franklin (2-3) blew his second straight save—and fourth of the season—as the Cardinals dropped two in a row for the first time since July 25-26 when they lost consecutive games to Philadelphia.

Mike Gonzalez(notes) (4-4) allowed two runs, one earned in the eighth which gave the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.

Rafael Soriano(notes) closed out the game for Atlanta for his 24th save in 28 chances.

After the game, Braves manager Bobby Cox was smoking a victory cigar.

“That’s a good one, you bet,” Cox said. “You can never get down. Franklin’s done an unbelievable job but like I tell my guys, anything can happen.”

The Cardinals rallied to take the lead in the eighth before Franklin fell apart in the ninth, allowing three hits and a walk. Nate McClouth led off with a double and Martin Prado(notes) singled him to third before Chipper Jones(notes) walked to load the bases.

“I’m not one to lean on excuses,” Franklin said. “I just would rather say I didn’t get it done.”

McCann followed with a double to center that left runners on second and third with no outs, but Franklin escaped further damage with two strikeouts and a pop out.

The Cardinals took the lead in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Yadier Molina(notes) and an RBI groundout by Brendan Ryan(notes).

Atlanta starter Tim Hudson(notes) allowed four runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings. He walked two and struck out one. His biggest contribution was his first career home run, a two-run shot in the second that gave the Braves a 3-2 lead.

“Obviously its been a while since I’ve trotted around the bases like that,” Hudson said. “I was really scared I was going to go my whole career without hitting one but it was exciting. It felt as good or better than any shutout I’ve thrown.”

Kyle Lohse(notes) made his first start since August 21 after returning from his second stint on the disabled list with a groin strain. He allowed four runs in 3 1-3 innings pitched, his third shortest start of the year.

“PG-not good.” Lohse said of his outing. “I just couldn’t get the ball down, it seemed like it was a constant battle. There’s no excuse for it, it just wasn’t happening.”

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was ejected by home plate umpire Greg Gibson for arguing balls and strikes after the sixth inning. It was La Russa’s first ejection of the season.

“I feel like when the tape is reviewed,” La Russa said. “They’ll see there were some close calls that we had a reason to question. You still play the game. Umpires don’t beat you.”

NOTES: The Cardinals Triple-A affiliate Memphis completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Albuquerque last night to advance to the Pacific Coast League championship. … Cardinals pitcher John Smoltz(notes) will miss his next scheduled start Monday against Florida with shoulder tendinits and will be replaced by Todd Wellemeyer(notes) (7-9) whose last start was July 26th.

Automatic win? What does give an automatic win? $200 million + Paroyroll doesn't. The more you talk, the less, it seems, you know about baseball. Are you some Kevin Slaten wannabe? He used to clutter St Louis air waves with a bunch of banter about pitching. Tell me this. All this rattling you have done, what pitcher should the Cardinals have picked up in either the off season or trade deadline. I can think of none that were available that would better this staff.

In 2006 the Cards won the series with a staff that consisted of Carpenter (15-8, 3.09) Suppan (12-7, 4.12) Weaver (5-4, 5.18) and Reyes (5-8, 5.06). Our closer was on the DL and bullpen was a mess. I'll take the staff we have now over that and 90% of all current MLB staffs.

And please quit double posting - your garbage wastes enough room in one post.

I woud not say to calm down folks...everyone has a front row seat to see what is about to happen in the playoffs. I called this a month ago....Cardinals Management FAILED to see that we have maybe 2 good pitchers...THis would come back and bite the Cardinals in the playoffs or down the stretch to the playoffs...This series against Braves proves it. CAN WE BEAT a TEAM over 500 besides the LA Dogers....CARDINALS better be concerned about this...I SAID also a month ago that Pitchers out trump hitters. Having Albert or Holliday doesnt give us a automatic win....This is sad...SAD...i mean SAD a first place team that is 11 games out in first loses a series THREE STRAIGHT.. I will call it today...CARDINALS will lose in the playoffs...PERIOD...Pitching problems will come back and bite the CARDINAL Management.....SAD Let me say it one more time...a first place team ...11 games in front...lose 3 straight....PLEASE

And Wellemeir is pitching tomorrow so that will be four in a row that they lose. Chicago will be back 8 and a half. I thought Larussa wasn't going to let them loaf.

Post #12, Richard - You joking right? Duncan is one of the best pitching coaches in baseball. I'm not sure what mismanagement you were speaking of.

The sky is falling!! Thanks Richard, I'm going to take my pill right now. I would normally think the same way, but blowing saves when you've been "lights out" all season is something that sometimes rattles a closer. Sometimes there are no off-ramps once you have headed down that lonesome highway. Look at Lidge, perfect season last year and took his club all the way. This year he couldn't buy a save if they were asking zero down and would let him put it on lay-a-way. I will be the first one to eat a big slice of humble pie if I'm wrong, and God I hope I am, but there was something intangible about that game today that gave my liver the shivers.

Cardinal fans need to relax. We're fine. There was no way we were going to go the rest of the season without losing back to back games. We got Carp going tomorrow, and our magic number is still 11. Franklin is just going through a rough patch right now and he will get it figured out because Duncan won't let him go any longer without figuring it out. We have the best pitcher (Carp) and the best player (who else?) in the bigs primed to take us back to the promised land. Relax!

If the opponents were smart they would walk the bases loaded against the Cardinals every inning, thereby guaranteeing that no runs would score. Never, in the history of baseball had a team been this impotent with the bases loaded. LaRussa clains getting the bases loaded is the glass half full. I say only scoring 1 or 2 runs is half full. No runs is the glass empty! They have the worlds greatest collection of choke artists or, alternately, wannabe heros. Not one of them can poke the ball to the outfield and at least drive in a run. The best they can do is have Molina bounce in to one of his patented double plays and score the man from third with no RBI. I would love to see a statistic about their team batting average with the bases loaded and nobody out. Take away Pujols early heroics and I would bet they are below .150 in that situation. When did Izzy grow that stupid looking excuse for a beard and rejoin the Cardinals? It figures that LaRussa would sneak him back on the team. Before we were told he was too tired. Today, I suppose, he wasn't tired enough. Perhaps tomorrow he will be just right. Pray that Carp doesn't need to be relieved, or that the game is lost prior to the 9th. The Card's "closer" will be the death of me and any other true Cards fans.

Richard, Duncan did have a bad day, It's no secret that he is a disgruntled employee right now, with the way the organization went about releasing his son, Chris. It's questionable whether he'll return next year, but Duncan is widely considered to be the best pitching coach in the NL if not all of MLB. We've seen pitcher after pitcher that were considered great when they played with the Cards, leave for the obscene money, and then turn out to be a turkey. i.e. Jeff Suppan, who was the MVP of the NLCS in 2006, Jeff Weaver, and several others. This is largely due to the genius of Dave Duncan. I agree with you that today he almost appeared to be throwing the game intentionally, but there was blame enough to go around.

P.S. George, don't even mention that hopefully non-contagious disease of Isringhausenitis.

You're right munchkin, I'm not saying that the Braves have no shot but when a team has nothing to win they will generally play like there's nothing to lose. Many a playoff hopeful has gotten knocked out by teams that had no shot. When a pitcher is throwing a no no, you dont think the last batter he faces is trying like hell to break it up? Even if the score was an insurmountable one, no one wants to go gently into that good night. I dont blame them. At this point in the season, all you may have left is the joy of shutting down or shutting up a team like the cards who have been on a hot streak. I know if my Cards were out of the running I'd still love it when they robbed someone like the Cubs of their shot. Is that shadenfreude? Maybe so, but I don't care.

Helen, none of the Brave top players are free agents this year, and even if one was, we all know baseball is team effort, and you never win games because of one player.
Are you saying the Braves should give up? They have nothing to lose! If that's your mentality, then I feel bad for you. They won't get a great draft position, and are still not out of the playoffs, why would they just give up? Maybe if we were consistently a mediocre team like the Twins or the Astros, but the Braves are hungry to get back into the playoffs.
If the comments you made depict your baseball mentality, then you are not a true baseball fan.

I don't think it's a sign. Carpenter will be on the mound tomorrow and if he is in his usual form, then'
the Cards should take the game.

It us interesting to see that this late in the season, teams that are pretty much out of post season
play still play the game like their in first place. Maybe it's not so much for the team but for the guys
who will be free agents this year trying to get the best deals they can. That seems to be what the
Braves are doing. I doubt if they will be able to overtake the Phillies in the East or the Rockies in the
wildcard and that makes me happy since I have never been a fan of theirs.

The Braves do everything they can to hand us the win in the 8th.

Franklin has straight up succed since he got the extension
    &
How many times has Ryan Sudsdick popped out at the end of a game when we need a big hit?

the second game at the beginning of a 4 week span that we are playing decent teams and we wreak of mediocrity.

Monday will succ w/ Wellemeyer on the mound, I sure as f hope we scrape something together tomorrow to avoid a sweep.

This game has been one that is painful to watch. I hope this is not a sign of things to come. Poor pitching from every Cardinal that took the mound, including our All-Star closer, Franklin, who has been stellar all year until his last two outings. Complacency is a dangerous thing and a 10 game lead in our division could be our downfall in the playoffs. While I am not usually the kind to play "blame the umps", yesterday's game could be largely credited to some really bad calls. The problem today is of another ilk. Ryan appears to be having some sort of meltdown and this couldn't come at a worse time. His confidence has been shaken and I don't think anyone in the bullpen is up to the task if he can't perform. This is a game that is completely about "when you peak" and I hope that didn't occur too early for my team. Could be jumping the gun here and panicking over nothing. I've been known to do that and maybe this is just one of those times. Let's hope so.
Oh yeah, one other thing. GO CARDS!!!

Healthy or injured, he usually gives up a few runs to the Cards.

Lohse is supposedly feeling the best that he has since being hit by a pitch in the beginning of the season, hopefully he comes out with his "A" game and we get things back onto the winning track.
