Jurrjens, Braves nip Cardinals 1-0

ST. LOUIS (AP)—One run was plenty for Jair Jurrjens(notes), who tamed the St. Louis Cardinals’ offense.

The 23-year-old right-hander worked eight scoreless innings, overcoming another light offensive showing behind him in the Atlanta Braves’ 1-0 victory on Friday night. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of his last 12 starts, but is only 5-3 in that stretch.

“Against this team, one mistake can cost the game,” Jurrjens said. “I was challenging them the whole game, just challenging the hitters and getting ahead.”

Albert Pujols(notes) had a forgettable game for St. Louis with the third two-error game of his career at first base while going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and no balls out of the infield against the 23-year-old right-hander. The NL Central leaders lost for the first time in 17 games on a day when the second-place Cubs also won, shaving their formidable lead to 10 1/2 games.

Manager Tony La Russa preferred to talk about Pujols’ nice defensive play to save a run in the seventh.

“Isn’t he the guy that made the play on the guy at the plate?” La Russa said. “Albert did not have a bad defensive day, in any way, shape or form.”

Jurrjens (11-10) allowed six hits while striking out seven with one walk, matching his career best for innings and helping end Joel Pineiro’s(notes) eight-game winning streak dating to July 3. The Cardinals were 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position against Jurrjens, yet came up empty.

“He keeps us in every ballgame and he’s just been dominant all year,” catcher Brian McCann(notes) said. “Tonight might have been his best performance of the year.”

Cardinals hitters certainly were impressed.

“He’s got a bright future,” Matt Holliday(notes) said. “Or, he’s pretty much in his future.”

Jurrjens had been 0-2 in his last three starts despite a 2.49 ERA while working at least seven innings in all three games because the Braves lost 3-1, 3-2 and 2-1 in 12 innings. Rafael Soriano(notes) worked the ninth for his 23rd save in 27 chances.

Pineiro (14-10) had been 8-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 12 starts since his last loss since June 28 against the Twins. He allowed one run on five hits in seven innings while benefiting from double play balls to end the second, third and fourth, matching his season high with seven strikeouts and walking two.

“They’ve picked me up a couple of times,” Pineiro said. “Today was just one of those days.”

Pujols pulled his foot off the bag on Omar Infante’s(notes) run-scoring groundout in the second for his first error. His second error came two at-bats later when he flubbed a barehand stop on Jurrjens’ roller down the line leading off the third.

Pujols had a pair of two-error games at first base in a stretch of six days in June 2007 and has five two-error games for his career, including two at third base as a rookie in 2001.

The Cardinals had a tough luck sixth after Pujols reached on third baseman Martin Prado’s(notes) fielding error and Holliday was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Pujols was struck by Ludwick’s grounder while attempting to shield Escobar’s view of the ball at shortstop for the first out, Holliday was out on a close play at the plate on Church’s 10th assist of the season and Prado made a diving stop on Mark DeRosa’s(notes) smash then made the throw for the third out.

Holliday thought he was safe and replays appeared to back him up with catcher Brian McCann tagging him on the elbow. Holliday watched replays, too.

“It was obviously a close play, but I thought I was clearly on the plate when he tagged me,” Holliday said. “It’s a close play, a judgment call. You win some and lose some.”

It was the Braves’ turn to be frustrated in the seventh after loading the bases with one out. Pujols made a nice stop of pinch hitter Chipper Jones’(notes) smash and threw home for a forceout as Pineiro, who had been on the way to first, had to hit the deck. Then Jurrjens took a called third strike.

NOTES: Jones is in a 9 for 78 slump. … Holliday is 7 for 12 with three doubles and four RBIs against Jurrjens. … Attendance of 43,984 was the Cardinals’ 27th sellout. … Yunel Escobar(notes) had two hits and leads the Braves with 40 multihit games.

I think Ed Hochuli may have quit the NFL and started officiating MLB. Three horrible game-changing calls last night at least. I've never been an advocate of the replay system in baseball, but after that display of incompetence, I may have to re-think my position.

Okay, people need to do their research before posting. Bill, you are a complete moron. The cubs haven't been getting bad calls by umps, they have been playing bad. You can't blame everything on umpires. I'm so sure that the umps are just against the Cubs and that the Cards have a 10 game lead because we suck and get good calls, and the Cubs are amazing, yet they haven't won a world series in 100+ years. Grow up. I'm complaining about umpires because Matt Holliday was safe when he slid into home, and they called him out. I knew it, Holliday knew it, LaRussa knew it, and the announcers knew it. Oh, and the crowd knew it. You're just mad that, yet again, the Cubs won't make it to the World Series. CUBS=Completely Useless By September. And Michael, when you say that "anyone will tell you that the Freak in S.F and him are the best pitchers in the NL right now," who are you talking to? I'm sorry but Carp or Waino has the Cy Young locked up. They are two of the best pitchers in the NL. Juurjens gets away with a 1-0 win because he walks Pujols, then hits Holliday. Wow, a good pitcher can strike out the power hitters and keep going. When Juurjens throws a 1-hit shutout, you come talk to me. Until then, get off of Juurjens d**k and watch today as Pujols and Holliday will hit back to back homeruns. Then, just for pure embarrassment purposes, Loshe will hit a homerun off of your starting pitcher. GO CARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well you guys, I looked over at the flubs page and those guys are all excited now because they gained a game yesterday. I think it's time your team kicked them again, lol. Those guys must be on something. They still think the division is reachable. I am neither a flub nor card fan, though I DO respect the Card's organization a whole LOT more than the flubs.. Having said that, and while I am NOT a particular fan of the Cards, I honest to goodness DO hate the flubs.

wow you cardinal fans are complaining about umps. first time all year you can complain, cubs have been getting screwed all years. pujols would be a average player on anyother team. cardinal pitchers just need to keep the ball in the park for a strike. come on cardinal fans cry for the cub fans. get a life cardinal fans you finally got some umps that can call balls and strikes and plays on the bases.

class, big-head. Don't turn into another Queen James.

Jair would be Cy Young finalist with a average offensive team. This offense is embarrassing! It seems that every year the Braves have one week part that dooms them. Last year the bullpin, this year the offense. .

If ATL had any offensinve production at all, they'd be a real threat to any team in the MLB. But, if the Nationals had any pitching, and the Orioles had any sense of financial responsibility, they'd be good too. I'm a huge Braves fan, but with that lineup, even with the stellar pitching staff, they'll never be better than just a little above average. They need some bats. End of story.

Both teams had to deal with the mediocre umpiring.

I wonder how AP felt after his mistakes. LOL, we know how ihe treats Brenden when he makes one.

That suspension on Thompson was utter bs. How do you suspend a guy when he didn't hit anyone & when it was just one errant pitch? And during that same period a player from selig's team tried to force his way into an opponents locker room to fight, but that guy receives no suspension. Seriously shady...
But, the reality is that Thompson at this point is just a bullpen guy that eats up an inning here or there, so a 3 game suspension on him didn't really hurt us.

    Better luck tomorrow.

    Go Cards !

Jurrjens record is that bad because of a lack of run support.

We're at the beginning of a tough schedule thats going to span about 4 weeks. No matter how good or bad our pitching is, we need AP and the other batters to show up every night, that is if we want to keep winning each series.

As long as we play .500+ ball the rest of the way, we'll at a minimum slide into the playoffs.
Atlanta, Fla, Col etc are no pushovers... it's time for our hitters to show if they can win us some games against good teams.

It's too late for the Cubs, but the race with the Dodgers for the NL title and home field advantage is very close with Philly not far behind. Notwithstanding their stellar performance since the All-Star break, the Cards still cannot afford more losses.

Juurgens is not only the best 11-10 pitcher I've seen in 40 years, but if he stays healthy
he will be the best pitcher ib baseball. I believe he is the least supported pitcher in basball per start. Guess the Yank's [when the time comes] will already have the 200 million lock down contract for him.
Go in to St. Lou and shut them down like he did. No easy task for sure and he's been shutting people down all year with the usual 0-1 run support he has to work with. Anyone will tell you, the Freak in S.F. and him are the best two pitchers at least in the N.L. right now.
