Renteria’s slam lifts Giants, wild-card race even

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Edgar Renteria(notes) spoke up in a team meeting Tuesday and told his San Francisco teammates to forget a heartbreaking 14-inning loss at Colorado the night before that ended on a grand slam.

“I told them, ‘Play ball,”’ Renteria recalled.

He’s sure doing so, and is a key reason the Giants are right back in the thick of things alongside the Rockies.

Renteria hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning and the Giants pulled even in the NL wild-card race with Colorado, beating the Rockies 9-5 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

The Giants moved into a tie in the NL West with Colorado, six games behind first-place Los Angeles. The Rockies lost their season-high fifth in a row.

San Francisco swept the Rockies at home for the first time since April 8-10, 2005. Last week, the Giants lost three of four at Coors Field despite leading every game.

“It was big,” Renteria said. “The Rockies played great in Colorado and beat us three times. I tell everybody, ‘You have to forget everything. If we want to go to the playoffs, we have to separate everything and play as a team.”’

Renteria homered with two outs to overcome a 5-2 deficit, connecting two pitches after Rafael Betancourt(notes) (0-1) relieved Franklin Morales(notes). Renteria hit his eighth career grand slam and second in two years against Betancourt.

“That couldn’t have come at a better time,” starter Matt Cain(notes) said.

Renteria came out for a curtain call from the sellout crowd of 42,571, the second time in two days it happened for the Giants—pitcher Barry Zito(notes) emerged to tip his cap during Saturday night’s 5-3 win.

Renteria also doubled in a run and matched his career high with five RBIs. He was intentionally walked in the eighth with two runners on.

Todd Helton(notes) and Troy Tulowitzki(notes) hit back-to-back solo homers in the fifth inning to put the Rockies ahead, but Colorado’s bullpen couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead.

“They kept fighting,” San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy said. “That’s what it’s about. Edgar, what a day he had.”

Brandon Medders(notes) (3-1) recorded two outs in the seventh for the victory. Jeremy Affeldt(notes) struck out Garrett Atkins(notes) and Carlos Gonzalez(notes) with the tying run on third in the eighth, and the pitcher pumped his fist three times leaving the mound.

Closer Brian Wilson(notes) pitched the ninth after saving the first two games of the series, with fans chanting “Sweep! Sweep!”

Pinch-hitter Ryan Rohlinger(notes) added a two-run single in the eighth and Eugenio Velez(notes) an RBI double as the Giants wrapped up a 5-1 homestand.

Tulowitzki hit his 24th homer to go with an RBI double and run-scoring single.

San Francisco, which has been struggling with runners in scoring position, started its rally in the seventh on Juan Uribe’s(notes) leadoff walk against Morales. Aaron Rowand(notes) singled and Fred Lewis(notes) was hit in the back by a pitch one out later to load the bases. After Eugenio Velez struck out, Renteria stepped in and produced his biggest hit since joining the Giants this year.

The series was a total swing from the teams’ previous meetings. The Rockies rallied for a 6-4, 14-inning win last Monday in which Ryan Spilborghs(notes) hit a game-winning grand slam after the Giants had scored three in the top half.

“It’s a very, very difficult game to lose,” manager Jim Tracy said. “But I think we have to put everything in perspective and not just what took place in this ballgame. And that is the fact that obviously we punched at them over in Denver and they punched back. …

“If you have ambitions of playing baseball in October, when you get knocked down you’ve got to stand back up. We got knocked down this weekend. Are we going to get back up?”

Cain saw his winless stretch reach seven starts since he beat the Rockies in Denver on July 24.

Gonzalez returned to the Rockies lineup for the first time this series. He hurt his left thumb Thursday diving for a ball and already had stitches in his palm from a separate injury.

NOTES: San Francisco has four grand slams this season. … The Rockies homered in consecutive at-bats for the seventh time in 2009. … Giants C Bengie Molina(notes) pinch hit but missed his sixth straight start with tightness in his right quadriceps. Molina tested his legs with some running and manager Bruce Bochy expects him to play during the club’s upcoming series at Philadelphia. … Rockies C Yorvit Torrealba(notes) singled in the eighth for a career-best 10-game hitting streak.

Holy cow... These major market west coast teams just go out and buy anyone they want to. It's like a casual shopping list to them. Let's see, we need a 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, a few pitchers... No wonder they're hated so much...just like the Yanks. Yet they actually brag about beating a home-grown team of nobodies like the Rockiez. Like I said before....the rich west coast teams with 10+ million fans are classless slugs...

    Giant slugs...meet the Dodger slugs
You're major market teams with 10+ milliion fans and actually bragging you beat a bunch of home-grown nobodys?
Classless goofs...Did you Gov ever learn to pronounce his state?

Unbelievable........! ! The fact that the Giants are even in the Wild Card race is a tremendous accomplishment considering their offensive output. After blowing that game in Colorado last Monday; to come home and win 5 of 6 including a sweep of the Rockies is exciting indeed for Giants fans.

As far as the Giants broadcasting team sucking, I'll take Jon Miller any day of the week. Duane Kuiper is funny and down to earth and although Krukow is a bit of a homer, at least he's genuine. And while they might not get to the playoffs, they are giving us a season that is exciting to follow. Don't hate because you don't get the Giants.

Most of all, they are doing it without the weight of Bonds' arrogance dragging them down.

Gary Radnich is a tard and the SF Giants TV broadcasting crew is nothing but a bunch of homers as a baseball fan I've seen many games and other teams broadcasting and let me just say this the SF Giants whole crew is very bitter, very bitter, I guess it's due to the SF Giants not winning a dang thing in the 51 years they've been in California? or maybe being the only team in California without a championship... LOL must sux to be a Giants fan since the A's and Angels both Cali teams beat your team in the world series LOL I love it man, SF Giants fan enjoy your moment but again your sh1t team with a bunch of rejects and SF looking hobo's will be done again with no championship... I FEEL GOOD YAY

Give the Giants credit for not laying down and playing dead after that upset extra inning loss a week earlier. The NL Wild card race is far from over and will most likely go to the final weekend with as many as 5 teams in the mix. Atlanta, Florida, S.F., Colorado, & Chicago are either tied for the lead or are within 5.5 games and with just over 30 left, we have a legitimate race and it will be a real tight one.

To assume that someone like Gary Radnich is a racist or that he built his career upon bashing Bonds is just not true. I would get frustrated with Gary's seemingly endless praise for Bonds in the batters box. Out of the box Bonds is nothing more than a bore.
If you wanna bash Gary, I suggest you do a little research. You might want to start with his beautiful African-American wife.

    @ #106 LOL!

You are ignorant for sure, and borderline racist.

You are racist because you think black men who works with and/or for white men are Uncle Toms. Do you think Rod Brooks one day woke up and said: "Geez there are no black men on KNBR, so let me be the first!"? And did you not listen to KNBR on your way home last Friday before Lincecum's start, when callers called in to rant about Barry Zito, and (I think it was) Ralph and Tom said this (I'm paraphrasing):

"Why should Giant-fans give Barry Zito, with that ridiculous contract, which no one should get and partly wasn't Zito's fault because he was offered it, the props now, 2.5 years after he begins to do what he had supposed to do? The reason why the Giants cant sign any bats' because of Zito's contract."

The only racist here is you, because you want to make everything a skin-color issue.

    onemogain86,
I agree that the Giants can be a threat if they make the playoffs especially with the pitching staff. What I would be concern with is your boys on the road. They haven't played well away from SF this year. This six game home trip starting in Phili tomorrow will be the biggest test yet for the Giants.

Thanks, but no thanks for your half assed "congrats". Dodgers might be sitting pretty in 1st still, but don't think for a second that the giants are not a major threat to LA if they make the playoffs. If the giants get the wild card, ur gonna see a dogfight.this sweep was a big statement after last weeks bull@#$%.

Yeah right bt your Rockies are in the process of a 10-15 game losing streak. Sorry we sent you on your downward spiral. You should be worried about staying in front of the DBacks and Padres instead of passing the Dodgers.

Great job San fran for the sweep. I thought you guys were done after last weekend and alot of your fans thought you were done also. This wildcard race is fun to watch. I gotta stick by my Rockies though. I still think both teams will pass LA.

"LOL" seriously we can just lol on your comments about KNBR. KNBR has some of the best broadcasters in the Nation. The Giants broadcasters, along with all the hosts on the shows are simply amazing. So what if only one "minority" in Rod Brooks is with KNBR, it means absolutely nothing. You definitely do not listen to the station or the shows at all. If anything, Kruk and Kuip are so positive towards any players any sort of contribution. They always try to find something positive something useful in every player, regardless of their age, color and performance. The reason they dont talk about Bonds anymore is because he is not part of the team. If anything from Damon Bruce to Gary to the support staff in the radio station have blasted the Giants front office for not being effective with their trades and free agency pick ups. IF anything, they have made fun and blasted Zito and his ridiculous contract for 2 years. It is only now that Zito is getting the accolades, which he deserves at this point, because he is pitching with poise and purpose. Your statements and accusations are so ridiculous its hilarious to some extent and sad considering you claim to be a Giants fan and you claim that you have followed the team and the station for decades. The entire KNBR lineup has some of the most insightful and objective commentary among many media markets. They give praise where its due and do critical analysis when that is the need. It is a very balanced coverage of the Giants, Niners, sharks etc. They dont suck it up to the front office of any of these teams, and they definitely do not suck it up to any player.

Congrats Giant fans on a big sweep but you must also thank the Dodgers for breaking the Rockies spirits for you. Even after the Giants choked last week and gave the Rockies big momentum before the Dodgers cooled them off big time. Do not fool yourselves though and think you are better than the Dodgers.

David, I wish you and your family well. Hope everything gets better for all down there. I love baseball, but it is, like you said, just a game. When disasters hit, we all need to pull together. Both northern and southern California have been hit by major disasters. Earthquakes, floods, fires. It's during these terrible times that we put aside their differences and fight for our homes and families. Thanx for the kudos. The Giants certainly have been a spunky team dispite a slow start. Hope our pitching can hold out. We're still trying to gnaw into that big lead that the Dodgers started out the season with.Hope we're beating you next week. I'm in South Carolina. Is there any chance that the hurricane that's suppossed to hit Baja is going to put some rain on those fires? Take Care.

    Anthony,
Thanks for the heads up.. Yeah the fires are very to close to me down here and it has been disastrous.. Like its been said before people, hate the team, not the fan.. Remember something here, baseball is game! I'm a huge Dodger fan and of course I hate the Giants but I don't wish bad things upon the fans who stick behind their ball club (for any team)... Anyways SF continues to surprise me.. Everytime I think they're done this club steps up and plays ball. Hat tip for a well played wkn. This should make an exciting finish... Well see you guys next week...

Glad to get the sweep and get back in the playoff hunt. I hope that all the fires down south around LA get under control. Things are looking very dire. I hate the Dodgers, but I don't want anyone to lose their home or get hurt. God, please protect the brave firefighters.

@ RobH - the Giants played a 4 game series in Colorado that ended this past Monday night (8/24/09) on a loss in 14 innnings. Each team then went on to play a 3 game series against different opponents before starting a 3 game series against each other that spanned this past Friday-Sunday (yesterday). The Rockies won 3 outta 4 in the 1st series, and the Giants swept the 2nd series.

Renteria's comments about "forgetting the 14 inning loss" were immediately following the 1st series.

...'forget a heartbreaking 14-inning loss at Colorado the night before that ended on a grand slam' ...'beating the Rockies 9-5 Sunday for a three-game sweep.'

How do you lose the night before in a 14 inning game and still sweep a series? I always thought a sweep was winning all of the games in a series? Can someone enlighten me?

LOL, your conspiracy theories about KNBR and the Giants coupled with that Giant chip on your shoulder is laughable. Did you once work for KNBR and then were let go? Or, better yet, were you employed by the Giants and then let go? Your take is full of holes and you contridict yourself time and time again. The Giants have many Latin or minorities players as you call them. Latin players make up 30 to 40% of MLB rosters nowadays and the Giants have are a fantastic representation of that. The fact is there are fewer and fewer African American ball players and more and more Latin players each year. You correctly mentioned many of the players, but you left out Juan Uribe, who is a leader on this team. Both by example and for what he says in the club house. More than most teams, the Giants do an excellent job melding their players to form a cohesive club house. There is no problem with team chemistry now that Bonds and Kent are gone. As for your beef with KNBR, yes they lack in diversity at the station, but to call Rod Brooks an Uncle Tom is pathetic and completely innaccurate. You are a fool and a pathetic soul. One bad comment by Larry Kruger and he was dealt with, what more do chip on the shoulder "fans" like you want? If you knew anything about the radio business you would realize that controversy sells. You need a certain number of hosts like Damion Bruce who bag on the GM or Ownership. But remember that KNBR and the Giants are in bed together. KNBR know who butters their bread. Wake up and move on! Douchebag!

Hey #99, the Giants have a test, but the Rockies don't, we know. However, why are you so happy playing subpar teams? It goes to show that you don't have faith in the Rockies. You have to beat the better teams to show you're good. If they can't even beat the Giants away then....
