Teixeira, Yankees cap 3-game sweep of White Sox

NEW YORK (AP)—Mark Teixeira(notes) and the New York Yankees are playing so well, they can focus on Joba Chamberlain’s(notes) future and still win big right now.

Teixeira homered and drove in four runs, Johnny Damon(notes) also went deep and New York polished off a three-game sweep of the struggling Chicago White Sox with an 8-3 victory Sunday.

Alfredo Aceves(notes) (9-1) provided stellar relief following an abbreviated outing for Chamberlain. With the Yankees determined to limit his workload, the 23-year-old right-hander was pulled after only three innings and 35 pitches.

“It’s good that we’re winning. Because I’m sure if we weren’t playing well and we weren’t winning, then people would make a bigger story out of it,” Derek Jeter(notes) said. “But you have to realize that Joba hopefully is going to be here for a long time, so in the same sense you want to make sure that he’s healthy.”

Jeter scored three times for the AL East leaders, who boosted baseball’s best record to 82-48. They are 31-11 since the All-Star break, also the top mark in the majors.

Jermaine Dye(notes) homered in the ninth and Scott Podsednik(notes) had three hits for the White Sox, who have dropped seven of eight.

“Well, we came to New York and visited the new Yankee Stadium. It is a very nice ballpark, and the hotel we stayed at was also very nice,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “That’s all I have to say about these last three days.”

Up next, a three-game series at AL Central rival Minnesota. It will be Chicago’s final visit to the Metrodome, where the White Sox are 2-14 in their past 16 games and 88-112 overall.

“I think the next three games, we’re in or we are out,” Guillen said. “We have to win the series out there, there’s no doubt.”

While the White Sox are fading in the playoff race, Teixeira is making a push for AL MVP honors. The switch-hitting slugger, in his first season with the Yankees after signing a $180 million, eight-year contract, has 32 homers and 101 RBIs.

He’s reached 30 home runs and 100 RBIs for six straight seasons, joining St. Louis star Albert Pujols(notes) as the only major leaguers to accomplish the feat.

Damon’s two-run shot off Freddy Garcia(notes) (0-2) in the third gave New York a 3-2 lead, but Chamberlain never got a chance to hold it.

“You’ve got to realize what they’re trying to do—to protect me for a long time,” Chamberlain said. “It’s humbling for me to know that they care that much about me. … I feel good, but I also understand this is a process.”

Phil Hughes(notes) retired Jayson Nix(notes) with two on to end the seventh, preserving a one-run lead.

The Yankees broke it open against Chicago’s bullpen in the bottom half, highlighted by Melky Cabrera’s(notes) RBI double off the left-field fence and Teixeira’s high drive that cleared the short porch in right.

Aceves entered in the fourth and pitched three scoreless innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory. The versatile right-hander has nine wins out of the bullpen, most among big league relievers.

“He’s been huge. As a reliever, nine wins, that’s incredible,” Teixeira said. “Very flexible. Whatever you need from Ace he’s going to give it to you.”

The White Sox lost 10-0 on Saturday, when they made three errors and managed one hit against Sergio Mitre(notes) and Chad Gaudin(notes). After that one, Guillen said everyone in his clubhouse “should be embarrassed.” He mixed in a few expletives, but never shouted.

Before the series finale, Guillen offered similar comments.

“As a group, we all stink right now,” he said, adding that the only two members of the White Sox currently earning their paychecks are the trainers.

Jeter singled with two outs in the third and Damon drove the next pitch deep into the second deck in right. It was Damon’s 24th home run, matching the career high he set in 2006 with the Yankees.

“We have such a great team from top to bottom,” Damon said.

Damon came out in the seventh with cramping in both calves. He was pulled for pinch-hitter Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes), who delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

“I’m expecting to play tomorrow,” Damon said.

Teixeira also had a sacrifice fly, in the first.

NOTES: C Jorge Posada(notes) returned to New York’s lineup after missing three games with a bruised left ring finger. He went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. … White Sox 1B Paul Konerko(notes) was rested. Mark Kotsay(notes) started at first base. … Damon’s homer was the 200th at the new Yankee Stadium.

Bosox52 Let's see now, the only one you and your daughter offended here was me so you apologize to everyone else and I'm the one that twists things? You posted early one morning calling me a bunch of names and saying I was "angry". I remembered your post to the Aussie and reminded you about it and asked "who's the angry one?". Plain and simple. I really had no problem with the Aussie post, I was just answering your comments. Then came the attacks on me and you "called me out". Now you are admitting everything, did you tell your daughter?

Some fans on here read just the Yankee thread. Others read the Red Sox thread as well. I read both. I noticed how you post on the Red Sox thread and it's very different than the posts on the Yankee thread. Anyone who reads both knows what I'm talking about. I just asked you to remove the shroud, be a man, say what you mean.

You're right, you and I both know where we stand. I always have known, now others do as well!!

    YANKEES BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodeye was a bandwagon Yank fan who decided to talk smack about Red-Sox after their humiliating performance just after the All-Star break,my comment to him does appear to out of line now after Ron H doing as he does so well stretched the actual post, the aussie i said to come to Boston and I'll stick your roo no knothing about baseball head on the barbie....refering to the shrimp on the barbie pitch they had years ago to promote tourism,ok maybe i wasn't being gentleman like in my response,I hate bandwagon fans, bandwagon MEGHAN,my own daughter put me out there pretty good and it only escalated to the point of my protection of my daughters comments, she forgot to mention Toys for Tots in which I wear my dress blues with pride and the occasional solemn detail of burying a young soldier at Otis AFB in Bourne MA,Meghan you are my only daughter and I wish you to stay off these blogs,i don't know how successful I'll be with that, people with a 20 year old daughter know what I'm saying...I will apologise to whomever I offended, this does not include some bandwagon aussie, and Ron H,for taken a comment and from weeks back and even comparing comments of recent was wrong and totally with malice, you know where we stand.....That is it and I'm still not giving up the div crown,Sox pitchers have to feel their sitting on spikes, who's next to be shipped.......magic number is what?.......32 games remaining..

    Big D...

Practice what you preach please! You've gone way more overboard lately, to the point where I look like a virgin smack talker. The "Sid" crack is lamer than anything that Nameless has nitpicked over.
Learn that some people may not write as good as they talk. I have the opposite problem. But you need to seriously chill & stop insulting others for all the wrong reasons.

    WL...

Mafia story gets saved for tonight (Monday)...multiple happy endings in the whole situation.

I am from N.J. Bergen/Passaic County..i agree lots of us are loud, some think of us as rude, crude and lewd! I assure you,all of us yankee fans are not that way..yes we are very exited about our team,we may get carried away a little more than we should. It is not my place or intent to defend our more over the top fans, If you have read any of my posts, both as Ultra Teen Gal and my new id Pinstripe1..you will see that i often call for civility from fans of all teams,Yankee and Red Sox fans in particular! I have tried to always post with respect and knowledge, however if i am personally attacked i will defend myself and my team with equal vigor and ferocity!
I realize that we all love Freedom of Speech but with that right comes responsibility! You should not be able to commit the cowardly types of attacks while hiding behind a keyboard anymore than you are allowed to yell fire in a crowded theater!
The monitor on this site needs to exercise a little more control over the types of postings that way cross the line, regardless of what teams we root for! Agree?
    Go Yankees!

Well said. I call myself bisexual because I've had serious intimate/loving relationships with men and women at . Also because I like to stay open-minded. My experience with women hasn't necessarily been as good as sexually but I haven't had that much experience so I wouldn't discount a whole gender based on that. You just don't know who you're gonna wanna be with. That's all.

It's amazing, now Yankees Fans are responsible for the"bias" voting for the MVP. If that were true Jeter wouldn't have been beaten by Morneau in 2006. But lets address your claim that sports writers are bias towards the east. To this I got to say your right, because the East Coast has better teams, and they play better baseball, they attract more fans, and they get better media attention. Tuff sh!+ if you dont like it I suggest you start your own web site, and start campaigning for all the players on the West Coast who nobody seems to know about. Put a bunch of links to AP on the your site and and a link to MLB. com and start a voters poll. You know what it will do for baseball, nothing. Because despite being a prestigious award, the award is not presented or controlled by MLB. It's a sports writer's award, and no matter what you do or say as a fan, it is still controlled by the BaseBall Writers Association of America.

What you've just written is some of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
