Jake Fox’s grand slam lifts Cubs over Mets 11-4

CHICAGO (AP)—Jake Fox(notes) went to his manager before the game and offered some reassurance. Then, he followed through and did what he promised.

“He said, `I got your back today, skip.’ Exactly what he told me,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday. “A couple of at-bats into it I was wondering, but he caught up in a hurry.”

Fox hit his first career grand slam and finished with a career-high five RBIs—all in his final two at-bats—to lead the Cubs to an 11-4 win over the New York Mets.

“I told him that today because I’ve been feeling really good the last couple of days of batting practice,” said Fox, who started in left field because Alfonso Soriano(notes) was out with a sore knee.

Fox has worked hard on his defense, so he can get a chance to do what he does best—swing the bat. He has played five positions this season, including catcher, and made the most of his playing time when called upon to start.

“Their biggest concern bringing me here was to be able to help them with my bat and not hurt them in the field,” Fox said. “I’ve proven to them that I’m not a liability in the field.”

His bases-loaded homer finished Mets starter Bobby Parnell(notes) (3-7) during a six-run fifth inning, and Fox added an RBI double off Lance Broadway(notes) in the seventh.

“The pressure is on the pitcher because he has already gotten himself in a bad situation,” Fox said of his grand slam. “Whenever you are a guy who drives in runs, you’ve got to be able to come through in that situation.”

Chicago had 14 hits.

Milton Bradley(notes), who was 3 for 3 on Friday, got hits in his first three at-bats Saturday and finished 3 for 4 with a walk. Booed earlier in the week, Bradley is 11 for 20 with four walks during the first five games of the Cubs’ homestand.

Ryan Dempster(notes) (8-7) allowed eight hits and four runs over six innings to get the victory.

“For me it felt like an average outing. But it is easy to be average when you score 11 runs,” Dempster said.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Chicago tied it on Aramis Ramirez’s(notes) RBI single. After Kosuke Fukudome(notes) walked to load the bases, Fox sent an 0-2 pitch into the left-field bleachers, his 10th homer of the season. Koyie Hill’s(notes) RBI double capped the six-run inning.

Parnell (3-7) gave up nine hits and eight runs in 4 2-3 innings. The right-hander has yielded 22 hits and 22 earned runs over his last three starts, a span of 12 2-3 innings.

“I made too many bad pitches and too many mistakes. It was a tough one to swallow and I’m just going to put it behind me,” Parnell said. “I know it’s going to be a process, a hard process. And there’s going to be some tough lessons learned. The only thing I want to do is keep the team in the game.”

Dempster gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases in the fourth before Brian Schneider(notes) lined a two-run double into the right-field corner. Fernando Tatis(notes) stopped after rounding third, then took off for the plate and was tagged out by Hill after a relay from shortstop Ryan Theriot(notes).

Chicago second baseman Mike Fontenot(notes) then made a nice diving stop on Anderson Hernandez’s(notes) grounder and kept the single from getting through to the outfield, saving another run and holding New York’s lead at 4-3.

Jeff Francoeur(notes) hit a two-run double in the first. Chicago got one back in the second on Fukudome’s single, an infield out and RBI grounder by Fontenot.

In the third, Bradley doubled home Dempster, who drew a leadoff walk. Ramirez, who was supposed to have the day off to rest, put the Cubs ahead with a two-out double over Francoeur’s head in right field.

NOTES: Chicago’s Jeff Baker(notes) was scratched from the starting lineup after hurting a finger while fielding a grounder during batting practice. That’s why Ramirez was put in the lineup. X-rays revealed no fracture for Baker. He has a sprain. … Mets 3B David Wright(notes), on the disabled list with a concussion after being beaned Aug. 15, worked out with the team before the game and hopes to be activated Tuesday in Colorado.

    @avs back to glory

i would counter that by saying that if he wanted the fans to not heckle him, he's playing for the wrong team in the wrong town. and because he signed that big 3/30 deal, especially as the big offseason offensive signing, he is going to be expected to, fairly or not, to produce the offensive numbers that warrant that kind of comittment.

i would explain my dislike of him in two ways- his on the field antics which probably explain why he has been with so many teams in his career so therefore not much of a clubhouse leader and that he is not producing like he is being paid to do. put it another way- if we had the best record in the league and were 10 games up, i would still be on his case for being overpaid for what he is doing on the field.

ps. the avs aren't going to be going back to glory anytime soon, cause our idiot owner doesn't seem to care that much anymore and remove pl and put in someone who understands a salary cap era nhl with a gm who isn't a bean counter. we're going to be bad for a long time.

    I don't hate Bradley and I don't boo him.

I have to pin this on Hendry and I hope the new owners bring in a new GM.

I don't agree that DeRosa was traded to free up cash to bring in Bradley. The amount of turnover elsewhere suggests that ESPN and other media created the DeRosa for Bradley myth.

Hendry was obsessed with getting more lefthanded bats in the lineup. So he signed Miles and traded DeRosa so that 2nd base was open for Fontenot or Miles. I was ok with that but it didn't work out. He also kicked Blanco to the curb and brought in Bako to compete with Hill. Big mistake.

Bradley, while a switch hitter, made no sense given that he's been a much better hitter from the right side his entire career. I thought Abreu would been the prefect guy:

    - He's a left handed hitter.
    - He's only going to get a one year deal.

And what if @#$%udome wasn't as bad as the guy from last year? Abreu would be gone and Koske could go back to right.

Look at our outfield: Soriano, @#$%udome and Bradley. Is that significantly better than Fox, Johnson and @#$%udome?

That ain't on Bradley or Lou. That's on Hendry.

Also, when I was watching games a year ago it seemed like Lee was the leader on the bench with DeRosa on one side and Blanco on the other. The second tier consisted of Ramirez, Zambrano and Dempster. I thought the biggest mistake in the offseason was not bringing Blanco back.

You must not pay very close attention... Lee was hurt and is having a hard time with his daughters medical issues early in the season... He didnt JUST turn it on after the all star break... he was hitting great before the allstar break... GUESS u missed the first half of the year...

Soto has been injured 3/4ths the year so far as well... I dont think he's been 100 percent since LAST year...

You cant just call someone a disappointment without weighting in all the FACTS....

Also comparing anyone to Vick is just RETARDED...

Zambrano is almost washed up...I dont think his back will hold up much longer...

Soriano is the biggest mistake they made... Should have skipped over paying him the contract he got.. 8 yrs 116 or some odd millions ...

He's not the 40 40 player I think cubs fans and hendry were expecting to be getting...

Yankees Let Him Go For A Reason .... Robinson Cano IS BETTER !!!!

Make a trade in offseason to get rid of soriano and bradley ... Bring in some young guys !!!!

Why the hell didnt they try claiming Hoffman or Kaz ??? They needed another solid pitcher with Big Z's issues... and dempsters lackluster year... Plus isnt rich harden the same guy who has been injury prone FOREVER....

Big Logical Idea would be HENDRY NO MORE....

Hopefully the new owners will realize this guys a SCHMUCK !!!!

He's the billy goat that's plagued the cubs for a Century !!!!

Pat H- all good points. Bradley will not fit here. there is a reason he's seen 7 teams in 9+ yrs. I will paraphrase an early season question he answered: "Milt, how do u feel"? He replied "Like 30million dollars". endearing, isn't he? I find it odd Milton began to contribute only after cubs all but eliminated...tho i give you the fact he had a decent OBP most of season, his bat has been DEAD until now. hmmm, how bout RBIs & HRs? does anyone believe we (Hendry) expected to pay 10mil/yr for this? he's only contributed a quarter of a season, can we pay him 2.5mil this year??? no, milton must somehow go. Now he cries "racism"...milton, milton, the fans would boo "Johnny B. White" if "he" played as you do. first he said umps unfair, next, he was injured (and injured, and injured...), now its the fans...what next? my only question is what team might want this cancer and what will it cost to lose him? While i admit he may enjoy a breakout year @ Wrigley in 2010, not worth the risk. if we cub fans view 09 as anything other than a failed experiment, we are lying to ourselves. i would put only ONE QUESTION to Jim Hendry, "If you could do the past off season all over again, what would you do differently?". if, as i expect he were to say "Nothing", time to hit da bricks. Grown men must be ready to admit to errors if they plan to improve themselves.

I think Bradley's rep and his poor start lead the normally quick to get on a bum Cubs fan into hating him. I just remember Alou coming ti the Cubs and struggling. I wish we would just be happy with a .400 OBP but it ain't gonna happen. The Cub nation will be behind any Chad Fox while he's hitting, example Mike Fontenot, and turn on him when he struggles, example Mike Fontenot. While Bradley was a bum early, who in the line-up wasn't. D. Lee has had his moments but he is still a shadow of the hitter he once was. Theriot and @#$%udome have been the only start of the season guys besides Lee that shouldn't hang their heads down.

I will repeat what I stated last week.
    Bradley has talent.
High expectations with low performance are not easily accepted by our fans (especially when it took moving Mark DeRosa out to get him).
His offensive performance has gotten on track with his talent and presently, he's hot.
He should take notes from the Vick playbook of not being well received by fans realizing that all it takes is performance to turn them around and quit complaining.
Missing Ramirez for a good part of the season was not good. Welcome back Aramis. Sorry you had to work on your day off but you took advantage of the opportunity. Sorryano went south with his contributions to the team (three run HR yesterday, aside). Lee picked it up since the break. @#$%udome is off and on. Fox has been a gift from the Cubbie Gods. Theriot is a major piece. Fontenot could be doing better. Soto turned out to be disappointing after his rookie year. Hill is so-so. Pitching has fallen apart. The Big Z can no longer justify his antics with performance or lack thereof. Dempster has lost a step. No closer leaves it scary with Marmol.
We definitely need some off season adjustments to get our competitive edge again.

yeah, plus losing track of outs twice didn't win him any brownie points either. He has issues and is not a good fit here. he's been doing well recently, but probably because the race is over and he probably knows that there is a decent chance that he is gone after this season. Maybe he does well on another team. I know he won't be sent to Ozzie or LaRussa because his issues will not float with those two guys.

I think he also is "disliked" b/c everyone loved Derosa and hated to see him go. The cubs took a guy everyone loved that was a solid useful player and replaced him with a DH that had one really good year, misses a lot of games, and is a fruitcake.

King C, most of us only hate when he makes bonehead plays. The guy has so much talent, but he can't let the drunk fools in the stands bother him. He has to ignore it and that is something he just can't do. He is one of the Cub players that has shown a big upswing since the All star break (offensively) but a lot of people expected him to come in and be a 35-40 HR guy, drive in 100+ RBIs, and that is not his game... look at the career numbers.
