Buchholz dominates Blue Jays in Boston’s win

BOSTON (AP)—Clay Buchholz’s(notes) curveball was so sharp that he threw it for a strike when he didn’t even try.

Buchholz allowed just three singles in 8 1-3 innings, and Alex Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia’s(notes) RBI singles made up for a Boston offense that sputtered in the early innings as the Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Saturday night.

Mixing fastballs with a changeup and his sharp curve, Buchholz struck out nine and walked two three days before the two-year anniversary of his no-hitter over the Baltimore Orioles in his second big-league start.

Buchholz’s first batter of the game may have been an indication that he had good stuff: Jose Bautista(notes) ducked out of the way as a curveball broke over the plate for a called third strike.

“I had a good one from my first batter to my last,” he said. “I had a good one in the bullpen. I was actually was trying to throw (the one to Batista) down in the dirt. It ended up catching part of the plate.”

The Red Sox won for fifth time in six games and maintained their 2 1/2 game lead over Texas in the AL wild-card chase. The Rangers beat Minnesota, 3-0, on Saturday.

Buccholz gave up an infield hit to Kevin Miller in the second, one up the middle by Lyle Overbay(notes) in the seventh and Batista’s leading off the ninth.

“That was a terrific game,” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “I actually think when he establishes his fastball and makes hitters respect that, it makes his changeup that much better and you start adding two breaking balls for strikes, it gives them a lot of different looks.”

Hideki Okajima(notes) gave up Adam Lind’s(notes) RBI double that scored Batista and Overbay’s run-scoring single before Jonathan Papelbon(notes) got the final two outs for his 32nd save.

Toronto starter Ricky Romero(notes) (11-6) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Buchholz’s strong pitching overcame a Red Sox offense that squandered three excellent chances in the first three innings. Boston had nine baserunners with six hits, two walks, a hit batsman and a passed ball mixed in, but it could only score one run.

“He was locating his changeup,” Overbay said. “He mixed up hit pitches very well.”

In fact, Buchholz felt he may have had better control Saturday than in his no-hitter two years ago.

“I think it was better tonight than it was that one night,” he said, before thinking it over a bit more. “I’d have to go look at the film to see how I was throwing.”

The Blue Jays, who managed to get just two balls out of the infield against Buchholz in the first six innings, were a close call away from being hitless entering the seventh. Millar was ruled safe by first base umpire Jim Wolf after shortstop Gonzalez went to his knees in the hole before firing to first.

“We didn’t get hits until later in the ballgame so we weren’t a threat earlier,” Toronto manager Cito Gaston said.

The Red Sox led 1-0 after one, but it could have been a lot more. They had runners on second and third with one out after Pedroia’s RBI single, but he was picked off third and David Ortiz(notes) fanned to end the inning.

In the second, they loaded the bases with no outs but failed to score. Gonzalez bounded into a fielder’s choice, with Jason Bay(notes) cut down at the plate by first baseman Overbay’s throw before Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) grounded into a double play.

In the third, they put runners on first and third with one out, but Ortiz struck out and Mike Lowell(notes) bounced weakly to first after Bay walked to load the bases.

An RBI single by Gonzalez and bases-loaded walk to Victor Martinez(notes) made it 3-0 in the sixth.

NOTES: Francona said after the game that RHP Paul Byrd(notes) will be recalled from Pawtucket and start Sunday. RHP Marcus McBeth(notes), recalled before the game, was sent back.

Buchholz is beginning to show the kind of stuff I saw him deliver in his first season at AA. I live in the small city of Portland, Maine where Clay pitched every 5 days for the Sea Dogs. His stuff was electric and he rarely gave up more than 2 to 3 runs per outing. As minor league fans, we knew we better see him while we could because he wouldn't be with us for long. Later in that same season, the guy goes up and throws a NO NO.

I think I may have been one of the few fans screaming for the Red Sox to avoid the Roy Halliday sweepstakes in July. I knew the deal would have to include Clay and he is just way to valuable to give up. Personally, I would have balked at a straight out Clay for Roy trade let alone throwing in another three or four top prospects. That "non move" is up there with their aquisition of Martinez in terms of personel decisions. Halliday has fallen off and Buchholz is throwing reminicent of his first four starts in 07. I am in no way insinuating Roy isn't one of the best despite these last four starts...... But I'll take a young, moldable, team player currently making pennies as opposed to a veteran, set in his ways making 15 million a year.

I'll go a step further and say they need to re-sign clay Buchholz to a longer term deal RIGHT NOW and sacrafice the next two years of paying him league minimum. I believe he will be a great #2 or #3 starter for six or seven years to come.

John S and Daniel, How are things. Nice win by the Sox yesterday. Close in the end though. Of course the Sox could have been winning 8-0 but Romero was able to wiggle out of trouble every inning. Daniel how is the Mrs? Hope she is doing better. Good luck today against Halladay, I have a feeling he is do for a win and since NY faces him next weekend I'd rather he get that win this weekend. :-) Have a good day Redsox fans. Hopefully more posters here today than yesterday. CHEERS!!!!

Clay Buchholz has nasty stuff, he is def fun to watch. He has a ton of movement on all of his pitches. He has the potential to be great.

Post 50 by hop: Got bad news for redsuk fans, Clay Buchholz has sh!t for a fastball and most of the time he can't even locate it!! And he is a "2" pitch pitcher and he only has "1" pitch that is a "plus" pitch and that is his curve.

a 94-96 fastball is @#$%? Full of laughs there!!
2 pitch pitcher? Obviously, this person doesn't know baseball. Clay may have the best changeup in the AL. A Trevor Hoffman type changeup. Clay has had both his change and his curve rated a 70 (on a 20-80 scale) Most pitchers have only 1, very rare to have 2 rated to high.

My guess is that you're a Stankees fan. Joba has been rated a 70 or more on his fastball, but that would be about it. I rated his slider a 65 due to not have enough bite, but a very good compliment to his high 90's fastball. You might want to go buy a baseball 101 book before posting. You really sound stupid.

Very happy Buchholtz had a good start. A lot of people were down on him and thinking he wasn't going to develop. I have faith in him. After all, he's still young and has a lot to learn. I hope this season is his turning point and he will be part of the rotation for years to come. Go Clay!!!

364 Truehammer21 Yankees record vs Texas this year is 5 wins 4 losses.

Baseball is a business. Big payroll, big draw, big profit. Payroll this year actually went down about 15 or 20 million despite signing Tex, Burnett & CC to long term contracts. It's a business.

Yankees have not won it all since 2000. The Phillies are the current World Champs.

    Just sayin................

Ted Kennedy is burning in HELL right now, right where he belongs. I don't know what all the fuss was over the death of a philanderer, drunk, and communist. As far as I am concerned, it was good riddance. One of the sorriest individuals to ever walk this earth. Oh, and y'all just keep on disrespecting the Rangers, keep on taking them lightly, keep on underestimating them, & we'll see who has the last laugh this year.

No one is talking about theb Texas Rangers. Neither the Red Sox or the Yankees can handle that bargin basement team. Shows that having money is not the end all. Yankees fans had better pray in their third rate cathedrals that the Red Sox win the wild card because if Texas wins it, early off season in the Bronx. A half billion spend and nothing to show.

Toronto's Travis Snyder is having a horrible weekend in Boston. 0 for 7 with 6 K's. If he doesn't get a hit in his next at bat he will officially be hitting his weight. Pitiful. Where is the Triple-A club for Toronto? I think Travis will be packing his bags soon.

Seriously...you need to go to another planet. Now way Greinke would win this year period! 12-8 and his other numbers are very good....I give you that. But the Cy Young is given to a pitcher that dominates his league...12-8 isn't dominant even if he is on a rotten team. If he was 15-3, yes I could see that.

Voters aren't gonna give him credit for being one of the best with that record...he might finish top 10, but he had a horrid 2 months from mid June until 1 week ago. They'll vote for a guy who was dominant most of the season but also did his best work when it mattered most. Even if CC splits his remaining starts...he'll win 18 plus have gone the final 2 months at 8-3 while leading the Yanks to a division crown & beyond. Voters will side with that vs. some guy that's at best (Greinke) a #3 on most teams.

Modern fans don't know anything about baseball history. The Yankees didn't have ANY championships until Babe Ruth went there. Christ.

Wow, Mathew PP. You are a sick ticket as demonstrated by your verbal pimping of your wife for the world to see. You have zero credibility cause you blabber on and on about nothing you can back up with statistics.. You say NY won a couple of championships in the 90's. Maybe you were thinking of the sox circa. 1919-2007, that was a couple of championships. NY won 96,98,99,00 that's 4 out of 5 years and 3 straight. Guess you are really 9 years old, since you state it was before everyone's time. As evidenced in earlier post NY has superior stats pitching wise to boston, handicapped by that stadium you insulted. You cast insults, make really disturbing remarks about you're family and don't know jack about the game you drone on and on about. I'm with Big D, T Kennedy was a drunken lush murderer from a bootlegging family who bought a presidency by being in cahoots with the mob and then turned on them like rats. Why that fat souse is being buried in Arlington next to fallen heroes is beyond me. And I can say this cause it still is America, Ted's socialist dream has not been fully realized. P.S. I would love to see you face to face and see how fast you call me homo, not that I am homophobic, cause I'm not that nor racist either. Another keyboard tough guy.

Again with championships won before I was born?? It's hillarious. Maybe you're 103 and as a kid you remember Ruth hitting 60 homers.... and the yanks then won their umpteenth straight WS. We don't care. One you win one, the monkey is off your back. Just like your NY football giants. The monkey is off your back. That game hurt but didn't bust me, we had won 3 of the past 4 or 5 superbowls already.

The Cy could be a one year wonder... Grieneke(spelling) has seemed to has found his stuff again. His record is only 12-8, plays for a horrific team that scores zero runs, but his stats are miles above everybody elses. He'd get it if voting was today. He struck out 15 last start.

Thanks Kluntmeister.... an ally.... Ted was a mediator in the senate for 40 something years. I can't believe the huge deal that the country made out of his death and the sorrow expressed. Being from Mass originally, you just don't realize what national impact he had. From all the the articles, both republicans and democrats in both houses respected the man and his work.
It's 9:30 here got stuff to do, beach day with the kids. It's like 100 degrees in San Diego. Breaking temp records everywhere. Take care. Go Sox..... Pats, Celtics, Bruins.... it's been fun.

I empathize with your post. Perhaps you viewed my words about the Kennedy's as insulting. That might have been the end result but it was not my intention. I posted memories about the Kennedy name that I have and quite a few others where I come from feel as I do. Is that wrong? Perhaps it is for those who disagree. For me he could have been the second coming and it wouldn't change my feeling about him or his actions. All the good he may have accomplished will not, for me, erase his past. Mary Jo Kopechne never got the chance to make her mark on this earth. Lets remember to respect her!
