Red Sox rally for rain-delayed win over Toronto

BOSTON (AP)—The Boston Red Sox are willing to tolerate Jason Varitek’s(notes) offensive struggles because of what he does behind the plate.

Or sometimes in front of it.

Varitek blocked the plate to erase a potential go-ahead run for Toronto in the eighth inning, then J.D. Drew(notes) doubled David Ortiz(notes) into position to score the tiebreaker in the bottom half on Friday night and the Red Sox rallied from a pair of deficits to beat the Blue Jays 6-5.

“It was an unbelievable block,” said Boston shortstop Alex Gonzalez, whose relay was a little high and a little toward first base, but still good enough for Varitek to stop Travis Snider(notes) from catching a part of the plate. “It was the play of the game.”

Toronto led 3-0 and 5-3 on another two home runs off struggling Red Sox starter Josh Beckett(notes)—that makes 12 homers in his last four starts—but twice Boston came back to tie it. It was 5-all when Varitek tagged Snider out at home and then home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom called for the tarp to start a 49-minute rain delay.

“He saved the game,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

When play resumed, Hideki Okajima(notes) (5-0) got Aaron Hill(notes)—the only batter he faced—on a fly ball to right to end the eighth. Brian Tallet(notes) (5-8) walked Ortiz—his only batter—to lead off the bottom half, then Drew doubled one out later to put runners on second and third.

Varitek was intentionally walked, then pinch-hitter Casey Kotchman(notes) hit a hard grounder that first baseman Lyle Overbay(notes) knocked down; he could only get the force at second as Ortiz scored to make it 6-5.

Jonathan Papelbon(notes) pitched the ninth for his 31st save, loading the bases before striking out Rod Barajas(notes) and Snider. The Blue Jays stranded 12 and their 17 strikeouts were one short of a franchise record for a nine-inning game.

“We had a lot of” missed opportunities, Toronto manager Cito Gaston said. “But we had a great chance in that last inning. A base hit would have probably broken it open and given us a chance to win.”

The biggest missed opportunity came in the eighth, when John McDonald(notes) doubled into the left-field corner and Snider scurried around the bases trying to score from first. Gonzalez relayed the throw from left-fielder Jason Bay(notes) to Varitek, who hooked Snider’s leg and kept him from touching the plate.

“He definitely pulled a veteran move,” Snider said. “I have to do a better job of reading his body language there.”

Varitek is batting .222 for the season, barely above the .220 average from last season that was the worst of his 12-year career. He is batting .213 against right-handed pitchers and 2 for 19 against Toronto this season.

“He’s a competitor. That’s the reason the Red Sox still want him here,” reliever Daniel Bard(notes) said. “That’s not going to show up in the box score, but that’s as big a play as you can ask for on a night like this.”

Toronto shortstop Marco Scutaro(notes) left after being hit in the head by a pitch from Beckett in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays said Scutaro had no symptoms other than a bruise, but he would be monitored closely.

Hill had three hits, including a three-run homer that gave Toronto a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) reached base four times with a single, double and two walks. He tied it in the fourth on a long fly that bounced off the warning track and the center-field wall into the right-field bleachers for a ground-rule double. The hop likely cost Boston a run, because Gonzalez had to stop at third, and Dustin Pedroia(notes) struck out to end the inning.

Again Toronto took the lead, this time on Barajas’ two-run homer in the fifth. And again the Red Sox tied it, getting a two-run shot fro Bay in the bottom half to make it 5-5.

That saved Beckett from a second consecutive loss. The struggling Red Sox ace threw 108 pitches in five innings, allowing five runs on five hits and a season-high five walks while striking out five.

Beckett is 1-1 with three no-decisions in his last five starts and has a 9.82 ERA over his last three outings. Toronto starter Scott Richmond(notes) also gave up five runs in five innings and did not figure in the decision.

NOTES: Fans in the Green Monster seats, near the American flag that was flying at half-staff in memory of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, recorded Beckett’s strikeouts on a sign that said “Teddy KKKKKKKKK.” … Red Sox RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes), who had been scheduled to make a rehab start for Double-A Portland at New Hampshire on Saturday night, will pitch Sunday instead because of the rain.

to john s, i commend you on your comments and give you a great deal of respect! best to you and your family! you seem like a true fan who appreciates the game! i just can't believe beckett didn't throw at his head as a scare tactic and or frustration! beckett can hit corners and spots like no else in mlb, i'm not sure but i think theses guys have about a second to duck from a 95 mph fastball! imagine that? i threw hard when i pitched and hit a lot of players accidentally because i was so wild...never once did i not cringe, hold my head, whatever gesture to prove i was a human being and didn't mean to hurt someone! beckett has gone too far this time like clemens hitting piazza...way too far! i guess youk and varitak had better be careful...

@ John S, one other thing, i am , never hasve been or will be a manny fan. hard to believe? just because he wore a sox hat and hit home runs doesnt make him a star in my eyes. he is a spoiled self centered over paid crybaby who always got pampered and is way overpaid. manny sucks!!!!!!!!

@ John s, i think anyone that comes on here on a regular basus knows what type of fan i am. i am not one that defends wrong doing. reguardless of what team it is or what the situation is. if i felt beckett threw on purpose i would want him out 12 games. because i believe its dead wrong. these are guys doing what they love and play for their team. i am not a hater. trust me on that!!!!!!!. i have compassion for all people. I personally didnt see why he would want to hit him on purpose. he is not a h R threat and is an average ball player.we do well off the jays. w/ beckett struggling the last thing in a close game he needed was to give a free base to them. it is no seceret beckett has done this in the past on purpose and as i said. " i dont like that ".also Beckett has been struggling as halliday is, aj , cc, and some others have in the first half of the season. but for some reason beckett gets stomped with his most recent struggle. why just him. i havnt seen anyone talk about halliday at all. Youk is one of our top hitters . hit 11 times and nobody mentions that. so this is mu opinion on this situation and an honest one. not because he plays for the sox, but because it didnt make any sense to want to hit him. nor the jays, or the umpire felt it was on purpose that i saw, but sox haters felt as if it was. believe what ever you guys feel. thats your right. i just feel it was a bad pitch . i have no reason to defend him. personally, i am not a beckett fan. to coc ky for me to appriciate. but i am not going to hang him out to dry if i feel he threw a bad pitch. hope you can appriciate my honest thoughts. peace!!

hey john s from NY-let them pitch the derby?? let Scutero take one swing at Beckett's head more like it! as far as the 12 year old boy comment goes come on you have to have something better than that? i have nothing against the ROID SOX, their fans or the college town they call a "city"!!! It's these insanely jealous and angry fans!! Beckett has to be punished more than 6 games this time, believe it or not I pitched(nothing serious just little league, high school, division 3), not for throwing at the body because it's part of the game but the head is another story... Clemens ruined some careers coming from that angry ROID Sox environment! Beckett is one of the top 5 pitchers in the league (hands down) but you can't start saying "let Josh be Josh!" because you have created another monster like your beloved Manny!

Rolo ,,, get real ,, Smoltz is doing better because of the coaching of Dave Duncan who has rebuilt more pitching careers that anyone !!! Don't bash a division that you know nothing about ...... the NL will do just fine against the AL in the series ,, in fact the reigning champs are from the NL aren't they???

Sure is a lot of trash-talking by knuckleheads who have a serious grudge against the Red Sox. I guess it's because their teams SUCK and have NO CHANCE of making the playoffs. Then there's the Yankee fans who only like their team because they look and act like a bunch of twelve year old boys (look at Texeira, Damon, and Gay-Roid and tell me I'm wrong). Still a lot of baseball left yet, suckas!

I think that the big hitters in the League, when they get their invites, should collectively extend a special request to Josh AND A.J. to pitch the Derby.

damn, i was sitting in a bar last night, they had this game on and i was sure i was going to be able to cheer when papleshmuck blew the save, and barajas swings at that bs pitch to strike out....wtf....and yeah, beckett has always been a schmeckle head....he fits well in boston, just like shilling and pedro when they were there. But paplebon really is letting alot of runners on this season. Just not as dominate as he was his first couple....guess these guys are getting used to what he throws...idk, hopefully he keeps it up...nice to see him blow more saves!!! And what a whiner with the whole wagner thing haha...jeez papleshizzer, quit whining about everything....

answer to #65: the same would happen to penny if lands on NL. any losing pitcher will look good in the NL. smoltz has nothing in the ball left. even pedro is getting some wins out there. cliff lee was a winning pitcher in AL but since getting to NL he's been untouchable. NL and their stupid rule of pitcher/hitting on the ninth spot of the lineup makes it weaker (I consider NL as a minor league level). smoltz best start with red sox was un July 11th against royals allowing one run in 5 innings. Believe me, we're better off without loser smoltz, that guy is out. you want to see if what I'm talking is true, take a look on mlb.com and check hitting stats and see that the reds and the cubs 2 teams of NL central are 28th and 29th on batting avg in the majors, teams he's going to face more often. In conclusion, if you're a pitcher and you suck, move to the NL.

BTW...Tampa's not throwing in the towel down 4 games in wild card race...ownership got cheap again & figured they could future value for a guy they overpaid for who's inconsistent & often injured.

Smart move if you ask me...but then again, I'm talking to a bunch of fans who's team already whacked 40% of it's starting staff in the last 3 weeks. Not to mention it's 8 SS's and 6 RF's along with giant moose called Youk that put himself before the team in charging the mound cause he got hit in the back....and then got slammed to the ground by a rookie pitcher that's 40 lbs. lighter!

Matthew...you make me laugh! Justifying your so called portfolio on a Yahoo message board because you're offended that some Yankee fans continue to twist the knife into the back of a horrid last 2 months of the RS season. My god, you might be more far gone than that delusional little troll who's name I refuse to type. Wake's one good start after 6 weeks on the DL with a pinched nerve doesn't make him a guaranteed #3 by any means. Please keep living in fantasy land!

Nameless...the Yanks fans posting here mean we're looking in the rearview mirror? How much more BS can you scoop this week? Read the paragraph above why we're here...to piss you off! The soap dispenser in the men's bathroom needs refilling...get to it!

    dumb comment?
Typical blind fan who will see no wrong even though there's evidence there.
Scutaro isn't the only one to be taken out by roid sox pitching.
And me jealous of your roid sox?
    Pigs might be out flying.
And it was TWO Blue jay players who would have gotten hit had one not ducked. But hey, Becket's given up how many runs in his last 4 outings?

John S, it's because Beckett almost hit two batters in the head. And he stared at the batters and smiled.
That's how messed up the roid sox are. Yes, your team won, but the way you play the game by taking out the opposite's team's best player is infantile. It happened against the Yankees, detroit, rangers, Blue jays, rays.
