Rockies’ Spilborghs hits grand slam in the 14th

DENVER (AP)—Ryan Spilborghs(notes) desperately wanted a chance at redemption. With the Colorado Rockies looking at a heartbreaking loss, he got his shot and didn’t waste it.

Spilborghs hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 14th inning, giving the Rockies a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

Spilborghs couldn’t deliver with men on base in the 10th inning, grounding into a double play with a man on third. In the top of the 14th, he misread the carom off the wall on Edgar Renteria’s(notes) triple that started the Giants’ three-run rally.

That was on his mind when the Rockies came to bat in the bottom of the inning.

“I had a chance off (Brian) Wilson and missed my opportunity,” Spilborghs said. “And then I felt like I missed the ball with Renteria and he got a triple. I was almost shaking because I wanted a chance to redeem myself.”

Spilborghs jumped on reliever Merkin Valdez’s(notes) 96-mph fastball and sent it into the Colorado bullpen to give the Rockies the dramatic win.

“When I was running the bases I was trying to get to my teammates as fast as I could,” Spilborghs said.

Colorado won the final three games of the four-game series and opened a four-game lead over the Giants in the NL wild-card race.

“It’s a two-game swing,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. “They’re looking like they’re going out of here two back and now they’re going home four. That’s absolutely huge.”

The Giants had taken a 4-1 lead in the top of the 14th on Eugenio Velez’s(notes) two-run triple and Juan Uribe’s(notes) groundout.

“I thought I had won the game at the time,” Velez said. “I thought we had it won.”

But Brandon Medders(notes) walked Dexter Fowler(notes) leading off the bottom half. One out later Justin Miller(notes) (2-3) relieved and gave up a one-out single to pinch-hitter Chris Iannetta(notes). He then walked Troy Tulowitzki(notes) and Adam Eaton(notes) to make it 4-2.

Before he stepped in the batter’s box Tracy told Eaton to keep the bat on his shoulder.

“I told him not to swing,” Tracy said. “Even if Miller threw three balls down the Middle, take the strikeout because I wanted Spilly to get a chance to hit.”

Valdez, the Giants eighth pitcher, came on and Spilborghs homered on a 0-1 pitch.

“No question it was a tough loss,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “You are going to have ups and downs, but this was as tough a loss as you can have.”

Eaton (1-0) worked the final two innings to get the win. He gave up three runs and walked five.

The Rockies had chances in the 10th and 11th innings but couldn’t come up with the big hit. Spilborghs grounded into a double play to end the 10th and Clint Barmes(notes) flew out to center to end the 11th with runners on first and third.

The Giants loaded the bases with two outs in the 13th but Medders lined out to third to end the inning.

“This was the most bizarre game I’ve ever been involved in,” Medders said. “To go that long and to go ahead by three runs and to lose on a grand slam was just bizarre.”

Colorado starter Jason Marquis(notes), trying to become the first pitcher in the NL to win 15 games, went eight innings, giving up one run on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.

San Francisco starter Barry Zito(notes) didn’t give up a hit until Brad Hawpe’s(notes) two-out single to right in the fourth. Then the Rockies broke through in the fifth.

Ian Stewart(notes) led off with a walk and Yorvit Torrealba(notes) reached on an error by third baseman Uribe. Marquis sacrificed the runners up a base, but Stewart was tagged out in a rundown on Fowler’s grounder to short.

With two outs, Zito issued consecutive walks to Barmes and Todd Helton(notes) to make it 1-all. Tulowitzki flew out to deep right to end the inning.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in first when Velez led off with a double, stole second, moved to third on Randy Winn’s(notes) fly to left and scored on Pablo Sandoval’s(notes) sacrifice fly to center.

NOTES: Sandoval left the game in the third inning with a tight right calf. … An MRI on Rockies’ RHP Aaron Cook’s(notes) right shoulder revealed no damage to the joint. Cook, who was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a strained shoulder, will start throwing after Colorado’s three-game series in San Francisco this weekend. … Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez(notes) sat out his seventh straight game with a sore left shoulder.

babamokie, reading an earlier comment you posted, i see that you claim to be a giants fan. If this is true, and i hope it is, i'd like to correct you. You said that the giants have only been to one world series in the last forty years, the 1989 series against the A's, but please don't forget about 2002 when we played the angels. A true giants fan is still haunted by game six of that series and that F'n rally monkey

As a giants fan myself i'm still holding out hope that we can steal the wild card, even if we have to take it from the dodgers.

I'm sure the dodger fans will call me a crybaby for bringing up the fact that the officials gave the last SF/LA series to the dodgers, but it's true.

Rockies fans, your team is playing great ball, my hats off to your team. My question for the rockies is; are you guys still paying justin miller? He was drafted by the rockies in 97, i think, and he's playing like he still wants you guys to win. Seriously, walking the pitcher with the bases loaded. If miller hasn't commited suicide, he's still a rocky at heart

Zoob are you talking about the Broncos and how Cutler & Marshall both want to jump ship....or how Shanahan left..... or how the 49ers KILLED the Broncos in the Super Bowl 55-10. Aww memories. Hahaha.... don't be bitter.

COL has a nice team but mediocre pitching at best. LAD haven't been playing good but it should be a good series for you guys. Nice battle of the wits if you'd like.

Last night was awful but SF won't go away.

Nightwing - I'm hoping for an awesome series... if the Rocks have any adrineline left... and were able to get any sleep last night. Go Rocks! As for those who are still bashing the Rockies for their showing in the World Series a couple of years ago, there's a variable that is often overlooked. True, they didn't produce when they needed to the most. However, in order to get to the WS they swept, swept, and swept... at the end of the year and through the playoffs... and THEN had to WAIT for 8 days. 8 days is a long time in a sport where timing is everything at the plate and rhythm is everthing on the mound. Not to excuse the WS fold... but if you know anything about baseball and the difference between "practicing" and being in actual game situations - the swoon was certainly understandable. No one will ever know what "could have been" - but I'm thinking the outcome could have been different had Colorado not had to wait for so long to get back on the field... as opposed to Boston, which had no wait whatsoever. They didn't win, period. They got swept. O.K. But it wasn't as though they weren't a great team that year.

Major coolness from Jim Tracy to stay on it through that grind. Huge credit also to Don Baylor, who came in as the Rocks hitting coach and turned a few guys around. Oh yeah, and awesome fielding defense DOES win games (Ok, with a little worn out, gut check, 14th inning magic).

Why do you only go back 35 games? The Rockies have had the best record in baseball since june 1st. The Cards benefit from playing in a weak division anyway. Those are just facts.

Granted the Rockies are playing well, but who has the best record over the last 35 games(post all-star)? The Cardinals are the team the Rocks have to beat to get to the WS. Go CARDS!!!!
Carpenter, Wainwright, Pinero, (Lohse is injured), SMOLTZ still a ???, but in a 6 game series, starting in STL I will take our pitching staff and did I fail to mention, Schumacker, Ankiel, Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, DeRosa, Molina, Ryan/lugo. I like our chances in post-season..........

Fun fun fun. Rocks have 11 guys, (is that right)? With WS experience now, maybe the bats wont die in the playoffs, and the run up, this time around... Unbelievable MLB doesn't have sallery cap to include these smaller markets. Small market but Colorado is 10th in attendance.

it's interesting to read some of the comments from rockies fans about the dodgers... it's true that they've been playing .500 ball since the all-star break, but the dodgers are a very good team that can't be counted out (especially since they happen to be in first place by three games). yes, manny is important, and yes, he hasn't been hot lately, but great hitters don't slump for too long, and there is plenty of time for manny to start hitting again. but this team has many good hitters - kemp, ethier, loney, hudson, blake... guys like martin and furcal are due to get hot too. with their solid pitching, the dodgers should be able to hold on. after this series in coors, the dodgers' schedule will get softer, so hopefully they can get on a roll. looking forward to some great baseball in september!

Yep, the Rockies did lose WS in '07 when they had 2 rookie starting pitchers with only a few months of MLB under their belt and a 4th pitcher who just got off the DL and hadn't pitched in 2 months. Rockies did lose 2 1-run games and Beckett and Schilling were on top their games. As a Rockies fan I don't feel bad about that WS at all.
    - Lets fast-forward to present and Rockies have most of those same guys and have added several new guys. They may be only team in MLB with 5 pitchers with 10+ wins, team is still winning at home and for first time ever has a winning road record.
Rockies are a .600 club playing .700 ball and the Dodgers are a .600 club playing .500 ball. I don't expect a sweep but Rockies should take 2-3 on the Dodgers this week.

I hope you're right, Just as long as it's not the Dodgers!! And in one last statement the NL will always be the underdog as long as the Jr. Circut cheats with the DH. They need to man up and do away with the DH and QUIT CHEATING!!! Rule NL except the Dodgers!!

"Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory".... I've read that in today's Chronicle.... and it typifies the SF Giant's history in SF.

Great game by Freddy Sanchez yesterday....he's really shined!! Ha. COL's Fowler takes a walk standing on one leg and Sanchez can't do the same in a bases loaded situation? Instead Medders bats w/ the bases loaded?????? Oh wells. Bring on Dan Haren.

LOL Barry Bonds alone walked 232 in '04 and this year's the SF Giants as a team have walked a total of 288 times. By comparison COL leads the majors in this category with 515..... with about half of those coming in the series against SF.

Ok,ok babamokie.Post season is almost here. And I believe that the Rox will take the NL West ( Dodgers are all Manny and without the juice he is no better than a bat boy )The wildcard is way too easy for the Rox to take and they are bound for a rematch with the Phillies in NLDS or NLCS whichever. As for the two of us, we'll meet again in October and by then all these talks would have been proven.
