Yankees win for 12th time in 13 games

SEATTLE (AP)—Ichiro Suzuki(notes) regularly is part of the conversation in the opposing clubhouse. It’s rare when it’s because of his mistakes.

Nick Swisher(notes) hit a two-run homer in New York’s four-run second inning and the surging Yankees beat Suzuki and the sloppy Seattle Mariners 5-2 on Saturday for their 12th win in 13 games.

Derek Jeter(notes) drove in two runs for New York during a sharp 2-for-4 night, going deep in the ninth inning to tie Omar Vizquel(notes) for second on the career list with 2,672 hits as a shortstop. The Yankees captain is one behind Luis Aparicio for the top spot.

“We took advantage of an error and good teams find ways to take advantage of miscues and we did tonight,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Suzuki and center fielder Franklin Gutierrez(notes) misplayed a ball in the second, opening the door for New York’s big inning. Suzuki then was thrown out on an ill-timed steal attempt in the seventh.

With third baseman Alex Rodriguez(notes) back in the lineup, the AL East-leading Yankees opened a season-high 7 1/2 -game advantage over second-place Boston with their fifth consecutive win.

Luke French(notes) (2-3) lost for the first time since joining Seattle in the trade that sent Jarrod Washburn(notes) to Detroit. The rookie left-hander gave up four unearned runs and seven hits in six innings.

French was let down by his defense in the second. With one out and Robinson Cano(notes) on first, Melky Cabrera(notes) hit a fly ball to right-center. Gutierrez raced over, but right fielder Suzuki also charged. Gutierrez put his glove out to try for the catch and braced for a collision with Suzuki, who pulled up at the last second. The ball hit off Gutierrez’s glove for an error.

“I called for it but then I heard Gutierrez call for it so I got out of the way,” Suzuki, an eight-time Gold Glove winner, said through his interpreter.

Jose Molina(notes) followed with a run-scoring single and Jeter drove in Cabrera with a sacrifice fly to center. Swisher then gave the Yankees a 4-1 lead with his 19th homer, hitting a 1-0 pitch from French over the wall in left.

Seattle tried to rally in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. Phil Coke(notes), the only left-hander in the Yankees bullpen, struck out Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) before falling behind 2-0 against Russell Branyan(notes). Suzuki then tried to steal third and Molina cut him down easily, taking advantage of an ideal pitch to handle.

“Two outs and it was 2-0, so I was more surprised at that,” Molina said of Suzuki’s steal attempt at that point in the inning.

Girardi, a former catcher, also thought it was an odd time for Suzuki to be running.

“A little bit. It helped set up the next inning for us too because he’s going to score on any base hit unless it’s an infield hit,” Girardi said.

Suzuki said he was trying to get two runners into scoring position, hoping Jose Lopez(notes) would try for second.

“I was hoping to create a situation where the runners on second and third and we could tie the game with a hit,” Suzuki said. “I also understand at the end it was an out, but I thought through the process and I understand why it was an out.”

Rodriguez, who missed the first two games of the series with back spasms and a sore elbow, got another cold reception in the city where he began his career. He was greeted with a chorus of boos and dollar bills raining down from the upper deck—the idea of a local internet marketing company that stuck its logo on the front of the bill.

A-Rod walked twice and struck out in the fifth, delighting many in the crowd of 44,272, the Mariners’ third-largest crowd of the season.

Sergio Mitre(notes) (2-1) pitched 5 1-3 innings to earn his second win since joining New York’s rotation in late July. He yielded two runs, one earned, and seven hits.

David Robertson(notes) and Coke combined for 2 2-3 innings of two-hit ball before Mariano Rivera(notes) finished for his major league-leading 35th save in 36 chances this season. He has converted 31 straight opportunities.

Seattle loaded the bases in the sixth, knocking Mitre from the game. Robertson struck out Josh Wilson(notes) on a 2-2 fastball then got Ryan Langerhans(notes) looking at a 3-2 pitch that appeared to be well below Langerhans’ knees but was called a strike by plate umpire C.B. Bucknor.

“I don’t really have much of a comment on it. It was a pitch, I took it, I thought it was a ball,” Langerhans said.

NOTES: Seattle LF Michael Saunders(notes) was a late scratch with a jammed right shoulder. Langerhans took his place in the lineup. … Cano extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the second inning. … Rivera has recorded 35 or more saves in a season 10 times in his career.

Danielle...you just completely backed my example of 12 yr. old posting!

You're a 51 yr. old man that posts here claiming that I fantasize about 12 yr. old kids. But that's not immature behavior? The fact that you'd think up a comment like that shows what a digusting individual you really are!!

Way to try & spin your previous comments. I call BS! Nice try! You ask why I criticize everyone that's not a Yankee fan? Because the damn Yankee fans never post BS or drivel you reading genius! How hard is it for you to read and understand what's written? Posts like yours, TJ's, yours, other Red Stink fans that don't get it, yours, & more of yours are ALWAYS the ones that don't make sense!

Get your facts straight...I've never once pulled a Benedict Arnold. You are with your lousy team! "I've given up on my team"...Hmmmmmmmmmmm, this after falling 1/2 game behind in the wild card race! Some great fan you are! First sign of trouble & it's "run for the hills!"

I on the other hand, would be talking s--t to support my team until the last out in the last game no matter what. This is simply about common sense, common knowledge, reading comprehension & character...you have none of the above & shouldn't be posting on the internet. Make another accusation about me "thinking of 12 yr. olds"!! You're a proven filthy mouthed, classless 50 something yr. old man that throws out slander & disgusting accusations! Let's see where it gets you!

OMG!!!! TJ or is it BJ (that was mine first cole ;) ) ? Congratulations, you have been selected no nothing dope of the month. You are the arrogant@#$%, I mean rooster saying there are no Yankee fans outside of NY who know anything about baseball. Try going to Japan and ask them what they know, maybe you can use Dice-k's interpreter, he does not seem ot need him lately. I listen to the games in FL and most times I hear the "lets go Yankees" chants no matter where they play. I would not care if they had ten fans and they were only the guys who post here frequently. Please, you are a no-nothing hater with nothing relevant to say filled with sound and fury signifying nothing. Try to come up with something that doesn't show you for what you are, a clown. BTW I was out today and only saw one person with a boston hat on today, and I saw thousands of people on the beach, the bandwagon is like the bus drivers bus, plenty of room to hop on.

Ron H, did you fail math in 3rd grade? Or had you already dropped out of school by that age, which I can only assume in your case was 18? 33-25 and 31-27 does not equate with 74-43. If you are one of the smarter Yankee fans, it would certainly explain quite a bit.

As big as Ortiz is he should hit 25 hr's a year by accident! Nice to see his average is up to .221 Not to mention the pitcher, Nippert, has pitched a total of 174 innings in the majors and given up 193 hits.

    @TJ
Perhaps you would like it to be mandatory that all players on a roster play at least 2 inning every game and a pitch count placed on every pitcher? You're over your head and out of your league! Get it, OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE! Man I crack myself up almost as much as you do with that uninformed, misguided post. You should really go to to a board where you fully understand the subject matter.

Hey Worldleader get that thing fixed and come tell Daniel to come on back.

TJ You know how stupid you sound when you take shots at Mo Rivera because he can't hit? The guys got over 500 saves and still counting. He can't steal bases either and his runs scored are terrible. I don't like the DH either ,but because of the way it changes the managing of a game. Your other statement about no one outside of NYC likes the Yankees, next time they have a road game on TV let me know if you see any Yankee hats or shirts or if you hear in the background "Let's go Yankees, Let's go Yankees." Then check the receipts they generate. Yea, I know, it's because they come to see them lose. The weakest part of your post is the "nothing counts before 2001" because that's the last time the Yankees won. Oh yes, you forgot about the high payroll and they should win every game. Don't mention your team incase they lose.

31 games above 500 with 45 or so to play ... the dogs days are sweet this year ... Go Yankees. Rant on Yankees bashers, rant on ... Oh yeah, for those who want to know what's gone wrong in Boston, I recommend looking at the lifetime averages of their six through nine batters. The Rays, too, with their new found glory year, and their loud, ugly fans are falling prey to low average as well as poor pitching, aren't they? Have a good year and let's hope it's the Yankees, Detroit, LA, and the wild card ... anyone but the Rays or Red Sox. Now there's a prescription for a beautiful Indian summer.

well TJ... the the only time your stadium is gonna fill up is when the yankees go on the road and visit your mediocre team. And also since the beginning of the 21st century the yankees have been in 3 ALCS and in 2 World Series not exactly what you call the first round of the playoffs, and also we'll enjoy our long stay at the top this year because nobody is gonna take it, we own the best record in the mayors for about 3 or 4 games, and we aint giving up the division up by 7.5 games in August, we're not the 78, 07 red sox or the mets... if you think you are better than us.... take a look at the standings, I know us yankee fans ALL OVER THE WORLD are obnoxious but we don't care because we are the best and everybody knows it

Nick S I don't know about Suzuki but Matsui aka Godzilla was a superstar in Japan for years and probably has so much money he doesn't care. I know the Yanks love him and so do I. Both of them are 10 times better than Sammy "corked bat supplement" Sosa doing his tap dance at the hearings and saying my English not so good. How many years was he here? And then there's Papi. On the flip side you have guys like Posada, a firey Cuban that speaks pefect English.

In General...yankee fans are the reason for virtually no one outside NYC liking the team. Yea, I know you all listen to the propaganda put out by the idiot NY Times, yea i'm sure they are middle of the road....but seriously if the yankees had taken the name Americans...you'd have the same results. Of course foreigners who cant speak english and have no idea of the difference btwn NY state and Michigan will say they are for the "yankees", when they mean America in general. The vast majority of yankee "fans" in other countries really dont know MLB. As for how good the team is. Its pretty good for a team where their pitchers are only half baseball players (the dont bat). Its time for the youngsters either get rid of the DH or include 10 batters in the lineup (pitchers included). Its a shame that you can have some supposed "baseball" pitchers who have come up from High School and rarely batted. Its actually real funny...seeing Mariano..swing the bat when its obvious he had to be told which end to hold. enjoy your short stay at the top. Either that or watch them lose the first round of the playoffs...like they have done since the 21st century began....

For the record Mitchell...there's been plenty of trolls here. If you want a discussion with some fun with it, you're in the right place. But I don't, nor others want to see dozens of posts from morons telling everyone to "eat my corn the loonggggggg way & get on the bus" or "keep s--king on my c-m covered b---sack" or "go off urself because my team is the best".

Plus, we don't want 12 yr old level material here either...you're right I've called people morons, 12 yr. olds, etc. because that's how they've acted or typed their thoughts. Nothing wrong with being honest while using ways to say something without using a pile of improper words...which believe me, I could do.

Bosox...ur right, some of it's on the pitchers, but at least half is Varitek....103 for 111 the opposition is in steals......ouch!

Mitchell, BG, Bo52....maybe I've been a little too amped up & my frustration has been mis-directed.
My bad...just sick & tired of the nonsense on this board & one sometimes thinks that his aggressiveness will change the direction of what this should be...

I picture to be a bunch of fans sitting in a bar, having beers, and discussing our teams with some trash talk in between.

But all I see here is idiot posts about "The Yanks won, but only 1 run was earned", "ARoid this and that (even though the guy hasnt done roids since before he was a Yank, but somehow that's our fault)", "The Yanks buy their way to a playoff spot, etc."....it just gets annoying & ruins it for most of us.

I'll mix in a deep breath or 2 before typing...maybe I should have been a lawyer.

On a side note...why does TNT play an old Prince song coming back to PGA Championship coverage, because Prince is from Minnesota? Could they be any less relevant?

@ Justin, lately your posts are making you sound like a hater. I know you're a strong, supporting, Yankee fan but it seems as if your main goal is put all the non Yankee teams and fans in their place! If that's all this board means to you you might want to rethink about coming to a sports board to do your posting. A lot of us appreciate your efforts to rid this board of the vulgar trash talkers but I'm afraid you are becoming your own worst enemy. Come on buddy! We need all the yank fans we can get but you need to chill a bit!

@#258 xxthumper - congrats on your first time!! That first game will always be with you and you will enjoy telling everyone about it. Welcome to the Universe!!!

@#289 I agree Ron! What's up with Jorge being in the lineup? I wish he would have taken some more time off. He must have asked Joe to put him in.

    Go Yanks!!!!!!
