Lee’s 7 RBIs help Cubs snap slump with 17-2 romp

CHICAGO (AP)—For the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, it was flying practice. For the Chicago Cubs, batting practice.

Pilots prepared for the weekend’s Chicago Air & Water Show by zipping their loud jets tantalizingly close to Wrigley Field’s upper deck during Friday’s second inning. The Cubs, meanwhile, were making noise with their bats.

“It was cool to watch, but it’s hard to hit when you’re expecting some bomber to fly over your head,” Derrek Lee(notes) said. “It was a little distracting.”

Apparently, not too distracting to the Cubs. They scored 10 runs in their first double-digit inning in more than five years en route to a 17-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And the flyovers sure didn’t seem to complicate things for Lee, whose seven RBIs matched the career high he had set July 2 against Milwaukee. He had a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk in the big inning to go with an RBI single in the first and a three-run double in the fourth before coming out of the game.

Lee said that when he pulled into second base in the second inning, “they were saying, ‘Uncle! It’s too hot for us to be out there this long!’ It was fun. I think this team needed it. We had some built-up frustration the way the Phillies beat on us for three days.”

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak. The Cubs also had lost seven of eight to fall 4 1/2 games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis.

Kosuke Fukudome(notes) hit a three-run homer in the first for the Cubs, who last scored 14 runs in the first two innings of a game on June 7, 1906—10 years before they moved into Wrigley Field.

The Cubs sent 15 batters to the plate in the second, when every starter scored at least once. Winning pitcher Randy Wells(notes) walked, singled, drove in a run and scored twice in the inning.

Wells (9-5) later added a double and also held the Pirates to two runs over six innings.

“I was lucky that the camera wasn’t on me when I walked because I jumped pretty high,” Wells said, referring to the jets that flew overhead at that moment. “That scared me a little. But it just added to the excitement, the buzz around the ballpark. The crowd was great. It just felt a little different than it has.”

Pirates starter Charlie Morton(notes) played down the impact of the flyovers.

“Everyone out there had to play through it, so I’m not looking at it as anything that affected my performance,” he said. “I just didn’t do anything right.”

Morton (2-6) gave up 10 runs in one-plus inning before getting relieved by Chris Bootcheck(notes), who allowed seven more runs in 2 1-3 innings.

The last-place Pirates hadn’t allowed as many runs since losing 19-4 to St. Louis on May 20, 2000. They last surrendered 10 runs in an inning on Sept. 7, 2008, at San Francisco.

Pittsburgh has lost 11 of 12 and has dropped its last three games by the scores of 8-0, 10-1 and 17-2.

“Just embarrassing,” Morton said.

After averaging 3.4 runs over their previous eight games, the Cubs had their highest-scoring game since beating Milwaukee 19-5 on April 30, 2008. It was their largest winning margin since they beat the Dodgers 20-1 in 2001.

Chicago excelled even though Milton Bradley(notes) (sore hip) and Aramis Ramirez(notes) (sore throat) were late scratches; replacements Sam Fuld(notes) and Jake Fox(notes) combined for five runs and two RBIs.

“Our guys swung it,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “It was good to see us score runs and win.”

The game began a stretch in which the Cubs will play 28 of 33 games against teams with losing records. They are 40-22 against such clubs, 19-33 against teams playing better than .500 ball.

NOTES: Cubs LHP Tom Gorzelanny(notes), whose foot was injured when struck by a hard grounder last week, said he was ready to start Saturday’s game against the Pirates, his former team. … The crowd of 41,619 was the Cubs’ largest this season. … Wells is 5-1 with a 1.98 ERA against NL Central teams. … Piniella said he would split playing time between catchers Koyie Hill(notes) and 2008 NL Rookie of the Year Geovany Soto(notes). The Cubs are 29-19 when Hill starts. … Slumping Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano(notes) had an RBI single in the second but was booed after he struck out later in the inning. … Fukudome’s 10th homer matched his total from last season, when he was a rookie.

87...I don't know. Been to a few card games in St.. Louis, never had a problem...then again, I was there to have a good time and NOT start sh*t. I think most Card fans are cool aside from what you have seen and the 3 or 4 VERY mentally challenged that come on here with nothing better to do than say stupid stuff. Speaking of which, Porky or whomever has still not fixed his cap... and is using grade school insults regarding other people's mothers....more fail on his part. . Oh well, always a few bad apples on the tree...just let the worms have em. snicker..

I live near St. Louis and I can vouch for the idioticness of cards fans. They are the typical lovem when they're good and don't care when they're bad. So desperate they are for heros that they named a highway after Mark McGwroider and voted Scott Rolen as the all-time best 3rd basemen. ....(realistic gag). The thing is, as with other fans, they pride themselves on being 'the best fanbase'. 'Cardinal Nation'. No offense, but do you think anyone else cares? The kind folks of East St. Louis don't give a tree growing out of building......unless they are doing good, of course.

PS.....Last week i went to a game and some hit a homerun in Big Roid Land. Everyone sitting there got free roids! Go Cards!

Corky-post 73. I believe you're refering to MY post #57, not, as you state, #51. I figured that would get ur attn... (too ez)... I have been following you, an "alledged Cards fan", all over... I have yet to see a MLB related post on a Cubs board. I am sorry if your offended, but since you do not "speak MLB", I can't figure why ur here. I see your "insults", nothing more. I firmly believe you are here for a "reaction"... you got one. It is not too late for you to attempt to "salvage a relationship" on cubs boards. We understand that you're a cards fan, that's cool. they're your team, and a good one. Most cubs fans respect that team (if not all teams) and treat them as such. I am not here to start a "battle blog" w/ you. I am asking that if you choose to comment on the cubs here, you do so respectfully. You will find my comments, and those of several others, are of a negative manner, true. Yet, they are a response to a comment you "started". I can assure you, i much more enjoy MLB/Cubs discussions, than tossing (rebuttal) insults your way. "We" don't pay attn to your comments (except to "rip on you"), unless they are "of a purpose". If you are posting "just to see your comments in print", buy a printer. If you post just to see negative reaction, seek professional help. If, on the other hand, you come to "discuss", even negative way, as long as you remain "respectful", you will likely find we cubs fans will value your opinion. As you can see, many true cubs fans understand the team has issues...and RESPECTFULLY comment as such. that's ok, part of baseball. Of course you are "welcome" in any case. Should you decide to continue in a "6th grade manner", i suspect you will be treated in kind. However, should you have comments of "relevence", i think you could voice your position, positive or negative, and be "accepted". (See my comments on your Cards "Team Report"- i treat your cards w/ respect & recv the same from 99% of cards fans). The choice is yours. I prefer you "fit it", I have seen the effect of continued "rude posts" from REAL Cub Fans, eventually, it's kinda like you're in a "gang-fight", and YOUR GANG stayed home. This is my one & only attempt to invite you to post in a "decent manner", i hope you make a logical decision. Good Luck to ur Cards (unless, Cubs "sneak back in").

When you put a minor league team on the field every year in the majors, you're going to get minor league results. all the pirates management wants is profit, profit, profit. all the trades they have made have simply been salary dumps. period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anytime your team is in a seasonal slide or rut , PLAY THE PIRATES. Need to take the headlines off a "badboy" player, PLAY THE PIRATES. Need a team for your little leaguers practice, PIRATES!!!
Please stop the madness. MOVE THIS TEAM. It is not fair to either the fans or the great "battlin bucs" tradition. 17 runs in 9 innings beats 17 years of sub. 500 play....

For some of us, our team giving up 17 runs, makes us care, like seeing your little brother come home with a bloody lip or after a loss in "the big game"... something needed to be said, because even though he annoyed the crap out of you a lot, you want to see them succeed. You hate to admit it, but dammit, you love 'em!

Yeah, at least I still remember 1 of the Pirates World Series wins.. in 79 over the O's.. which my dad and grandfather were HUGE O's fans! He used to give me such a hard time for being a Pirates fan, and for the fact that I liked the National League better.
He was also a huge Colts fan (of the Baltimore variety), so I won't even discuss the fun over my love for the Steelers.

Let's Go Buccos! .500 for the season!!!!
