After Niese gets hurt, Figueroa lifts Mets 9-0

NEW YORK (AP)—Jonathon Niese(notes) wound up doing the splits while trying to cover first base, went to the mound to throw a practice pitch and collapsed in pain from a season-ending hamstring tear. Another game, another injury for the New York Mets.

Nelson Figueroa(notes) came in and shut down St. Louis for 4 1-3 innings, boosting the offense with a two-run triple in a 9-0 victory Wednesday over the Cardinals. By the end of the game, Niese was at a hospital.

“An MRI this afternoon revealed a complete tear of the right upper hamstring tendon from the bone,” the Mets said in a statement. “He will undergo surgery for its repair. Niese is out for the remainder of the season and is expected to be ready for spring training.”

Second baseman Luis Castillo(notes) missed the game, a day after spraining his left ankle when he slipped and fell in the dugout. Left fielder Gary Sheffield(notes), just off the disabled list last weekend, aggravated a hamstring injury while running after a sixth-inning single and came out of the game. He didn’t think it was serious.

More troubling was the latest update on shortstop Jose Reyes, who hasn’t played since May 20.

“The MRI showed significant scar tissue and inflammation behind the right knee, related to the hamstring tendon injury, which has caused continued pain,” the Mets said.

Niese entered the rotation less than two weeks ago because of an injury to Fernando Nieve(notes). He was hurt in the second inning taking the return throw from second on Joe Thurston’s(notes) grounder.

Then he threw a warmup pitch, grimaced, fell and grabbed the leg. Niese was assisted off the field by two trainers.

“Early on, he was just in a world of pain,” Figueroa said.

Brooklyn-born Figueroa (1-2) made a spot start against Arizona on Monday, lasted just 1 2-3 innings and allowed six runs and 10 hits. He wondered whether he’d be sent back to the minors but was kept for long relief. He gave up four hits, struck out five and walked none in his first major league win since Sept. 1 at Milwaukee.

“I feel like I made up for the last time I was out there,” said Figueroa, who shortened his stride. “I walked into the game to boos and they turned to cheers very quickly.”

Bobby Parnell(notes) pitched three innings to complete the six-hitter and earn his first career save. He could be headed to the rotation.

Angel Pagan(notes) singled, had a two-run triple and hit his second homer in four games, driving in four runs, and David Wright(notes) hit an opposite-field, two-run homer in the first.

New York took a 5-0 lead in two innings against Kyle Lohse(notes), finished with 15 hits and won for just the second time in seven games.

Cardinals reliever Brad Thompson(notes) threw a pitch near the head of Wright in the sixth, prompting plate umpire Bill Miller to warn both dugouts. An inning earlier, Figueroa loaded the bases when he hit Cardinals star Albert Pujols(notes) near the right elbow.

“You understand it’s part of the game but, you know, you do it the right way,” Wright said. “You hit a guy in the butt, you hit a guy in the back.”

Thompson maintained it wasn’t intentional.

“I certainly wasn’t throwing at him, just trying to back him off the plate,” he said.

Figueroa said much the same about the pitch to Pujols, who wouldn’t guess intent.

“I just think they were just getting the ball in,” said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who understood why the warning was issued. “You can’t get the ball up that high. Pitching inside, that’s part of the game, but that ball was up around his head.”

Still, Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur(notes) was angry.

“You start throwing at a guy’s head, you mess his career up,” he said. “I thought that was pretty bush.”

Cardinals center fielder Rick Ankiel(notes) helped the Mets by allowing balls from consecutive batters to go off his glove in the three-run second. The first, on a difficult drive by Figueroa over the drawn-in Ankiel, was ruled a triple. Ankiel had to come in for the second, scored a sacrifice fly for Pagan plus an error.

Ankiel left during the bottom of the fourth.

“He was a little dehydrated,” La Russa said.

Lohse (4-7) dropped to 1-7 with a 5.56 ERA in his last 11 starts, allowing five runs and seven hits in 2 2-3 innings. The Cardinals have lost all but one of those outings.

“The ball kept coming up,” Lohse said.

Francoeur slid into him covering the plate in the second.

“He got me in the jaw pretty good,” he said. “I was a little fuzzy there for a minute.”

NOTES: Pujols doubled his first two times up, giving him hits in six straight official at-bats—the last five for extra bases—following an 0-for-13 slide. He grounded out in the eighth.

Hey Peo, Kironde is right... he's not hard to find. Just look for the only trailer in chicago. It's the one under the highway and powerlines. Look for 82 stationwagon in the driveway with a bumpersticker that reads "my son beat up your honor student".

Kironde... the baby bears don't have a game tonight! That means instead of watching MLB ticket, you will have to watch your dad beat on your mom, and cry yourself asleep looking at the poster of Ernie Banks hanging on your bedroom wall.

Saam #5 and Gre #7 - While I don't agree with #1's choice of words and/or "attitude," his point is crystal clear, the Mets have a roster with more spanish speaking players born abroad -outside the USA- then any team in the history of baseball. I'm not saying they have 1 or 2 or even 4 more players than any previous team, they have a total of 16 players out of a 25 man roster. That type of imbalance is a sore eye ONLY because statistics prove "best talent available" is not 60% Latino. A player shouldn't be signed because they speak spanish or came from a counrtry near the Equator. A player should be signed because he's the best available option based on talent, performance, character, AND GRIT. The Mets are soft, out of shape, and grit-less. This is what happens when you pay someone far more than their worth, while simutaneously making him untradable and financially complacent. Not many people can say they outbid the Yankees for a player, but Omar did, by $20 MILLION.Truth be known, they Yankees didn't want Beltran.

Furthermore, when the MLB average is 28% "Latino" players, why is Omar getting a pass for signing 60% of his hombres? If he was an Asian GM, and the Met's lineup started to resemble Yoshamura Giants, the same "proud" Latino fan base would be screaming for his head. Don't deny it. And these ridiculous names K-Rod, F-Mart, M-Tex, El Duque', A-Rod, El Capitan....etc. Give me a break. Was Ted Williams called "T-Will"? Was Brooks Robinson called "B-Rob"? Was Babe Ruth called "Das Babe"? Willie Mays called Willie M? Hank Aaron called Hanky? Was Sandy Koufax called K-Fax? And Koufax was probably the greatest strike-out pitcher to ever play. Hell no. These guys, these legends, had name like The Spendid Splinter, The Human Vacuum, The Sultan of Swat, The Bambino, The Say Hey Kid or simply Say Hey, The Hammer or Hammerin Hank, or my favorite, Ernie Banks, Mr. Let's Play 2.

Any man who shows bias, is not the best man for the job. Period. This goes for Omar and the Wilpons. Does anyone think the Wilpons would have given $500 million to an investor (Madoff) if he was Asian? Black? Spanish? HELL NO !!! They felt, Madoff is 1 of us (Jewish), he's family, he can't be a bad guy, he must be honorable, he would NEVER screw us. LOL....... sounds like something Omar might say to Tony B. LOL

This is absolutely rediculous with all the Mets' injuries. The team would be competing for a playoff spot, if not, a division title with what they had. An infield of Wright, Reyes, Castillo and Delgado, an outfield of Sheffield, Beltran and Francoeur, with Schneider and Santos splitting time at catcher. Their bench would be excellent (Tatis/Cora/Pagan/Sullivan/Murphy), and their pitching staff would be great (Santana/Pelfrey/Maine/Perez/Livan Hernandez). Even their bullpen would be better (K-Rod, Putz, Parnell, Feliciano, Niese, Nieve, Figueroa). I'm almost afraid to watch, because I don't know if the team on the field will be the one the wins 9-0 or the one that blows three-run leads. All I know is that Minaya should be following Bernazard out the door. Not his fault for the injuries, but he has mismanaged this roster even without them.

hmmm...looks like "Kironde" is goin board to board "makin' friends" eh? he/she was on a cubs board earlier "insulting" a long-time poster. seems to be "new" 'round here...Kironde, you'll go alot "further" w/ some MLB knowledge & respect instead of 5 yr old comments...we've seen all those before. do what you think is best. Mets do Cubs a "favor", Cubs don't capitalise. pathetic. Does either team want the Division?! Wildman, your Brewers may yet have a "say", true, maybe only as "spoilers"...lots o' gms vs cubs, i assume cards too? said it all year, Crew needs pitching, tho no surprise. Houston looks like they're "gasping"...Mets, you guys got some off-season work to do. Lots o ppl had Mets picked BIG, this down season a bit of a surprise- Good Luck to you.

Nieces injury is extremely serious and the odds of him coming back ever are about 50/50 Injuries aside, now I know why Bobby Cox gave up on Jeff Franceu He complained about Pujoltz being hit .The guy is hanging over the plate and crushing pitches I was shocked that it took that long to move him off the plate. Then he has a chance to bury Lohse at home and he slides softly into the tag and help Lohse up.Gold glove defense includes dropping fly balls.line drivesand kicking the ball around in the outfield. This is a soft player who is merely on a decent streak at the plate.

What a disaster the Lohse $40M contract signing is turning out to be. Once again, Scott Boras has made fools of major league owners by 'giving hometown discount' to St. Louis just before the economy collapsed, to sign a below average, journeyman pitcher who had averaged less than 8 wins a year before he struck gold with his 14 win 'career year'. With 4 wins in August, we'll be lucky to get 8 wins this year for the $10M we'll be paying him. When Lohse started out with 3 opening wins, I thought he broke the cycle and we'll be better for it. Then reality came crashing down. Lohse and Boras ran to the bank to quickly cash their checks before they were voided. Talk about 'laughing all the way to the bank'. And to think we could've had Jason Marquis (12-7) and or Looper (9-5) for a fraction of what it took to sign Lohse.

I hate how almost everybody is bashing on each other when they normally don't know much.

25- I'm sorry, but it's not like all of your star players went down. If Pujols got hurt, I'm pretty sure you guys would be a middle-of-the-pack team. The Mets have a lineup now that's basically just backup players.

Also, the medical staff shouldn't be blamed for these injuries. Some of these injuries are freak (such as Castillo's yesterday) injuries. Granted, there are a few things that could've been done (certain stretching routines for example for Reyes), but not much.
