Mets put on rare offensive show in 9-7 win

NEW YORK (AP)—Even the home run apple wasn’t prepared for the Mets’ sudden power surge.

The apple didn’t fail to pop up because it’s had little practice at spacious Citi Field—the Mets have hit just 28 homers there this season. Rather, Fernando Tatis’(notes) shot came too quickly after Brian Schneider’s(notes) for the apple to do its job: show itself after every Mets homer.

New York went 80 innings overall without a home run until Schneider and Tatis connected in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 9-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

So, as the cherished home run apple took the 2 1/2 minutes it needs to reset after Schneider’s home run, the 40,014 fans who’ve had little to cheer for the past two months chanted “Apple! Apple!” until the end of the inning. Then the gleaming new apple—Shea Stadium’s is now on display near an entrance—finally popped out of its center-field hole.

“It was good to see the apple finally come up,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said after New York’s second straight win. “It took its time, but it finally came up.”

Even better for Manuel was seeing a rare, robust Mets offense.

“It’s good. It’ll give us a little momentum, and I think a little more importantly some confidence going into the second half,” David Wright(notes) said. “I’m excited the way we swung the bats. Got some big hits, took some walks. Got some big RBIs.”

Gary Sheffield(notes) had three RBIs and Daniel Murphy(notes) drove in two runs to key the Mets, who had their best offensive output at home since June 24, when they scored 11 against St. Louis.

Luis Castillo(notes) had three hits and scored three runs, Wright hit a long RBI double and Jeff Francoeur(notes) had two hits in his second game with New York. The Mets amassed 16 hits in improving to 8-12 since Carlos Beltran(notes) went on the DL June 22.

The Mets needed the offense after the bullpen nearly wasted a 9-3 lead. Francisco Rodriguez(notes) gave up a run in the ninth but finished for his 23rd save.

“I thought the guys made an effort, they kept coming back. They didn’t quit,” Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said.

New York scored more than five runs in a game for only the fourth time since Beltran went out. The outburst came on a day the club received a good injury report for the first time in a couple months: Carlos Delgado(notes) (hip) and Jose Reyes (right leg) had encouraging workouts.

High expectations for a playoff run wrecked by injuries, the Mets head into the All-Star break 42-45, 6 1/2 games back of Philadelphia in the NL East. The Reds, who added Jay Bruce(notes) to their injury list Saturday with a broken wrist, are also 42-45.

After Wright had an RBI double to center in the first, New York batted around in the third, helping extend Aaron Harang’s(notes) winless skid to nine starts dating to May 25.

Sheffield had a two-run single, Murphy an RBI double and Alex Cora(notes) a run-scoring hit to make it 5-0. The last time the Mets scored at least four runs in an inning was July 2 at Pittsburgh.

Harang (5-9) left after three innings, having given up five runs and eight hits.

“I’m going to take these few days and regroup,” Harang said. “I didn’t have my location. I was missing spots, having to come back and having to throw strikes and they were up there swinging. They hit a few bloops, too. It just didn’t work out.”

Pelfrey (7-4) rebounded from his start July 7 against the Dodgers in which he gave up five runs in three innings by shutting down the poor-hitting Reds. He gave up two singles in the first, then retired 10 in a row before walking the first two batters of the fifth.

After walking Ramon Hernandez(notes) leading off, Pelfrey committed his sixth balk, becoming the first pitcher with six balks in season since Chris Michalak(notes) for Toronto and Texas in 2001, according to STATS LLC.

He gave up an RBI double to Adam Rosales(notes), who was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, and RBI singles to Chris Dickerson(notes) and Willy Taveras(notes) to make it 7-3. But his manager left Pelfrey in to work through the jam, and he rewarded Manuel with two scoreless innings.

“I think that was huge. As a pitcher you want to be left out there to work out of some tough situations, and he showed the faith in me to be able to do that,” Pelfrey said.

NOTES: The Mets had been last in majors with 26 homers at home. With two today, moved one ahead of Pittsburgh. … The Reds’ Joey Votto(notes) was ejected in the fourth inning after being called out on strikes for the second time. … The Mets optioned INF Argenis Reyes(notes) to Triple-A Buffalo after the game. … Reds RF Dickerson left after the fifth inning with back spasms. … The last time the Mets had gone at least 80 innings without a homer was April 15-25, 2002. … The last team to go at least 80 innings without a home run was the San Francisco Giants, last year. They went 116 straight innings without a home run between July 22 and August 5, according to STATS LLC.

It's about time the Reds release Weathers. He is overall ineffective and the two runs that he gave up late when relieving were the difference in the game. Get some young arms up here.

After three (3) straight seasons as frontrunners and coming up short in the playoffs,( three years ago) and in even making the playoffs, last two years, maybe the Mets need this from the back of the pack to get it done.
They could also learn how to run the bases a "little better".

    Take it easy Anna G,

so the mets are 3 games under .500, and within a couple weeks will be getting solid bats back in, and good arms back on the mound. How can you blame Minaya for being 3 games under 500 in a very tough league when half his team is gone? You want a complete overhaul of the entire team? Frenchy WON'T save the season. Neither will Matt Holliday or would-be Mark DeRosa. But when the bulk of the line-up returns, they'll be last years team MINUS the blown saves and PLUS Frenchy. I'll take that. That actually sounds fantastic.

Let's stop blaming Omar or Jerry. Let's pray that the worn out Mets can notch a few wins before the DL empties, cause after that . . . there will be no reason to be complaining at all. (Just hating on the Phillies)

With the ALL STAR break at hand it would be a great time to get rid of old tired worn out Krusty Dusty. The worst manager the Red's have ever had, and that Includes Ray Knight, Now that's saying something.

To be honest..If you would have told me that Perez, Maine, Delgado, Reyes, Beltran and Putz would all miss a significant amount of time, I would have thought their record would have been worse. I'll take 42-45 right now in a heartbeat..they are still in striking distance. Hopefully everyone will come back healthy by August 1st, and the Mets can make a push.

    Anna,

Ollie was a horrible signing as we can see now, Lowe demanded too much money and thus lately hasn't been all that good, Dunn and Abreu although are doing ok respectably for their teams, the mets historically have signed too many players past their prime. What hurts the mets is being in a big market where its tough to allow for young players to develop but that is what the mets must do. Getting rid of their whole scouting department maybe be a start, and although Omar has done great by bringing in the big names in the past (Beltran, Martinez, Rodriguez, Johan), he should be held accountable for this 'decaying' team. But we must develop and identify talent like the Red Sox and even the Yankees who have brought up some good young talent, so this will take so serious work and I don't agree there are any trades to make a run this year. But if you think there are some, give some examples of who you would trade on mets to get whom, Please reply!

Reds just a bad team. At least we had some pitching for a while, not anymore. Harang has been awful for 1-1/2 years now, Cueto is struggling for past few weeks, Arroyo either good or simply horrible, Volquez on a disable list (forever?) and Owens is not a pitcher. Bullpen was o.k. but how long you can rely on two 40-old relievers? Offensively - well it's been poor for long time, and now they don't have any power hitters. And the manager - well he has never been good anywhere, and it shows here why. I see them finishing last this year.

hey michael i understand omar had built himself into a hole. He did it, he has ran this team now for quite some time and proven nothing. it is his time to go. However i think there are some moves out there that he could have made prior to the season...... Dunn Abreau not signing ollie getting peavy or lowe. need i say more. HE IS A TERRIBLE GM he has done nothing to FIRE this team up in any way shape or form. Time for a new gm and manager. i understand all the injuries but he is accountable

Let's be honest folks, if you review the mets at the moment, the mets have holes at 1st, 2nd, short, left, center, starting pitching and bullpen. So if your the GM of this team, can you realistically fill all of these holes by the trading deadline. Im sorry, but for all of you requesting Omar's head on a platter for simply bringing in Jeff from the Braves, there is only so much you can do. Omar barely has a farm system (Murphy and Martinez, need I say more), and the only pieces you can trade to get something of value means that someone or all of the 'big 3' have to go (Beltran, Wright or Reyes). Im curious, what your responses would be, Play GM for a sec and tell me what Omar should do! Please reply!

Omar has got to go. All that money he gets to spend and the team is horrible.
The team should have been completely dismantled 2 years ago after the horrendous choke.
I am a die hard mets fan since 1969 and this is the worse team I have ever seen. I live in philly
so it makes it even harder to stomach. Omar cannot keep bubble gumming this team. We need somebody with a brain in their head to turn this thing around. Keep Santana and K-Rod and Francour.
Get rid of the rest. OVERHAUL, DAMMIT!

mets need to make a trade, I am a die hard mets fan not a fairweather fan. frenchy is alright and all but come on, he is not our cure. We need another solid pitcher and a bat. We dont need the best of both worlds just solid baseball players who can play. Manuel is a clown and needs to go. Maybe Minaya as well...... We need to do something before we are watching the phillies again in sept and oct
