Sandoval homer lifts Giants past Padres

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Not even getting one of their All-Star pitchers knocked out of the game by a line drive was enough to slow down the San Francisco Giants.

Matt Cain(notes) left after throwing only 35 pitches but was bailed out by five San Francisco relievers, who scattered three hits over the final 7 1-3 innings of the Giants’ 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

“You don’t win a game like that unless your bullpen comes through for you,” San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. “You lose one of your horses in the second inning, that’s a big blow for your club. You need your bullpen to step it up and they all did. We needed good pitching from the ‘pen and they came through for us.”

Justin Miller(notes) (2-1), San Francisco’s long reliever all season, allowed just one hit over 3 1-3 innings and used his changeup to keep the Padres’ hitters off balance.

Brandon Medders(notes), Sergio Romo(notes), Jeremy Affeldt(notes) and Brian Wilson(notes) completed the seven-hitter for San Francisco. Wilson pitched 1 1-3 innings for his 23rd save in 27 chances.

“The starting staff has taken away innings from us all year in a very positive way so any time we can go out there and try to perform and pick up the team, we’re definitely up to the challenge,” Miller said. “It’s just an amazing staff to be around. We’ve got Cy Youngs, we’ve got 300-game winners so it’s easy to overlook the bullpen. But I think that’s what relievers like also, is just to go out there and do our job quietly and get ready for the next game.”

The Giants moved a season-high 11 games over .500 and within six games of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first in the NL West. San Francisco also owns the best home record in the majors with a 31-14 mark.

Pablo Sandoval(notes) homered for the second straight day to provide San Francisco with all the offense they needed.

A day after Jonathan Sanchez(notes) pitched a no-hitter, the Giants beat the Padres for a third straight game behind Sandoval.

Sandoval hit his 15th homer of the season in the fourth, a two-run shot off San Diego starter Tim Stauffer(notes), who was making his first major league appearance in nearly two years.

Cain, the Giants’ All-Star pitcher who entered tied for the second-most wins in the National League, was hit just above his right elbow by Stauffer’s line drive with two outs. The ball ricocheted off Cain toward the third-base dugout as the Giants pitcher grimaced in pain while walking around on the field.

Cain then circled back behind the pitcher’s mound where he was met by trainer Dave Groeschner, manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti. After a brief conversation, Cain attempted to throw a warmup pitch, but the ball sailed over the head of catcher Eli Whiteside(notes).

That forced Bochy to go to his bullpen, beginning with Miller. The right-hander got Everth Cabrera(notes) to ground out to end the second then retired nine of the next 10, getting a double play to end the fourth following Chase Headley’s(notes) one-out single.

Cabrera hit a one-out double in the eighth off Romo, stole third and scored when Whiteside’s throw sailed into left field.

Affeldt replaced Romo and walked Tony Gwynn(notes) Jr. before getting Adrian Gonzalez(notes) to fly out. Wilson then struck out Kevin Kouzmanoff(notes) to escape the jam.

Called up from Triple-A Portland prior to the game, Stauffer (0-1) retired his first 10 batters before Randy Winn(notes) blooped a single to left. Sandoval then hit the next pitch into the left field stands to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.

Stauffer allowed only four hits in seven innings and matched his career high with seven strikeouts in his first start since Aug. 26, 2007.

“I felt like I did everything I could,” said Stauffer, who missed all of 2008 after shoulder surgery. “I’ve felt the last 3-4 weeks as good as I’ve felt in the last five years. I’m able to pitch, let it go without fear of whether I might hurt my shoulder again. All this work is to get here, and hopefully stay here.”

NOTES: Giants 2B Juan Uribe(notes), whose error at 3B wound up giving the San Diego Padres their only baserunner in Sanchez’s no-hitter, was originally charged with an error in the fourth on Saturday night before the official scorekeeper later ruled the play a hit. … To make room for Stauffer, the Padres outrighted INF Craig Stansberry(notes) to Triple-A Portland. … Whiteside made his second straight start while Bengie Molina(notes) was with his wife, Jamie, for the birth of the couple’s first child.

What does the last 6 years have to do anything with Shaun Hill? Was he starting in those 6 years? Stay on topic. He's only started 10 games, which he was great in. 8 games last year, 2 the year before that.

Doesn't that mean the Dodgers are beating up on bottom feeders if they are in the same division? Giants are good enough to beat the Cards.

    John -

Yep Shaun Hill is the answer. 6 straight losing seasons in the worst division in the NFL. Right on.

What are the Giants doing besides staring up at LA? Sure any average team can beat up on bottomfeeders, what's your point?

Dan G- You just keep hating on Hill, I don't have to say a thing. His record speaks for himself.

No, I don't have to comment once my team wins a world series. You just keep keep going to the past. Why don't you take a look at what's happening now?

Kevin, John, you two in your 70's? If not, then comment once your "great" team wins a world championship.

Oh, and keep apoligizing for Hill (former Viking THIRD stringer), very intelligent.

Dan G kind of loses credibility when he says "owned" and "noob", but here it goes..

You originally posted that the Giants were a lousy team.... Which doesn't make sense considering they have the second best record in the N.L., and have the best pitching staff in the league. You then go on about hockey, which pretty much no one here cares about, and the Pitt Pirates. Then you talk about Bonds, although the last time the Pitt Pirates had a winning record, Barry was on the team, as stated before.

But then you say your a Cardinals fan. Well guess what, Giants are 4-3 against them. So there you go. San Francisco is a lousy town? Then why do so many tourists come here? And by the way, Shaun Hill is 7-3 as a starter, and 5-0 at home. You act like watching him is a bad thing.

and at least Manny hasn't been lying for years on end (like Bonds) creating an even bigger black eye on MLB.

Are you serial! You believe Manny JUST started taking steroids 50 games ago....LOL From doping up to quitting on his team mates and faking injuries because he wanted to get out of his contract, Manny is as BIGGEST a fraud as there is in baseball.

Everybody knows that Bonds was an A**hole, he did'nt try to hide it behind his smile and "Barry being Barry" bull.

When it comes to the Punk & Fake Club, Manny is a member in good standing

    1) It's fun when people don't know how to properly use apostrophes, isn't it?

    2) I'm a Giants fan but I also watch NHL games regularly, so I didn't enjoy that one comment. Oh well. Too bad you had to throw in the Versus reference. While some of the finals games were stuck there, Game 7 was indeed on NBC.

    3) Who is Sean Hill?

Dan G the Pens?? I was shocked the NHL was still a League. But to my surprise there was game 7 on the Versus Channel. Right after a stellar game etween to Highschool teams from mississippi and followed by a replay of a 1983 college game between FSU and florida. Boy that Gary bettman knows how to get exposure for the NHL. Who gives crap about the NHL. the College World Series elimination game, and the Giants /Mariners game both had more viewership.

Giants fan here actually amused by dan G... He's not so bad, I've met some smack talkers before that put him to shame.. He's just doing his best to get a rise out of you and it's working. There's not much more to do in Pitt than come up with lame slander when the penguins and steelers are in the offseason...

Dan G, ....... Judging by the way you write you're probably a generation X early 20's punk who still lives at home with Mommy and Daddy. You always want your way because they gave it to you out of fear that they would give you a complex if they didn't. Well now you're a loser who can't survive on your own. So you need to put down other teams to make yourself feel better. PATHETIC!!!!!

Dan G, ........ I see what you're doing. You were also on the Cards/Cubs page putting down the Cubs. You just a little man that needs attention. Well I have a better idea: Why don't you go play with yourself and give yourself all the attention you need. You're a smuck and a loser. Your Pirates are a joke and so is your city. By the way, the last time your Bucs had a winning record Barry Roids played for them.
