Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez pitches no-hitter

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—On a night when Jonathan Sanchez(notes) was nearly perfect, his father chose the perfect time to show up in San Francisco and cheer him.

The Giants’ left-hander threw the majors’ first no-hitter of the season Friday night and came within a whisper of a perfect game. The only runner to reach against him in an 8-0 victory over the San Diego Padres came on an error by third baseman Juan Uribe(notes) with one out in the eighth.

Sanchez’s dad, Sirgfredo, watched nervously from the stands, bouncing and biting his nails, then scurried down to the dugout to be among the first to congratulate the pitcher.

“Right now I’m just going to go home and hang out with my dad,” Sanchez said. “I was pumped that he was here watching the game.”

Sanchez almost lost his no-hit bid in the ninth, but Gold Glove center fielder Aaron Rowand(notes) saved the gem with a leaping grab at the center-field fence to rob pinch-hitter Edgar Gonzalez for the second out.

“I was going to go up and over and land on the other side of the fence if I had to, to try to make the catch,” Rowand said.

The 26-year-old Sanchez (3-8) returned to the rotation after a nearly three-week demotion to the bullpen—and only got the call because 303-game winner Randy Johnson(notes) went on the disabled list this week with a shoulder injury.

With his father and a friend cheering from the stands, Sanchez threw a called third strike past Everth Cabrera(notes) to finish his first career complete game. Sanchez walked toward the plate and thrust his arms in the air as catcher Eli Whiteside(notes) rushed in for a big hug and the Giants poured out of their dugout.

Also offering their congratulations were Johnson, the last major leaguer to throw a perfect game, and Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti, who tossed a no-hitter for the New York Yankees on July 4, 1983.

Sanchez’s father is visiting from Puerto Rico and arrived in San Francisco on Thursday night. When the pitcher came off the field, the two shared a long embrace before Sanchez jogged back onto the field and tipped his cap to the cheering crowd.

“This is a gift for him,” said Sanchez, who struck out a career-high 11. “I feel awesome.”

It was the Giants’ 13th no-hitter and first since John Montefusco did it on Sept. 29, 1976, at Atlanta. Their last one in San Francisco came when Ed Halicki beat the New York Mets in the second game of a doubleheader on Aug. 24, 1975.

The Padres were no-hit for the seventh time and first since Bud Smith blanked them 4-0 for St. Louis on Sept. 3, 2001.

Sanchez did it on 110 pitches, 77 for strikes. After the final one, Whiteside came rushing with a hug, followed moments later by all their teammates.

Sanchez, who won for the first time since May 25, had a five-start winless stretch this season in which he went 0-4. He told The Associated Press two days earlier that he hadn’t lost his confidence in his ability to pitch and be a starter in the major leagues—and manager Bruce Bochy hadn’t lost faith, either.

“They gave me a second chance. You see what happened tonight,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez pitched the first no-hitter in the majors since Carlos Zambrano(notes) for the Chicago Cubs against the Houston Astros in Milwaukee on Sept. 14, 2008. That game was relocated from Houston to Miller Park because of Hurricane Ike.

Sanchez’s father and friend stood nervously—with the rest of the crowd of 30,298 at AT&T Park on a cool night in the Bay Area—and his dad couldn’t look at the end. But Sanchez’s dad quickly got down to the dugout to congratulate a pitcher who made his 51st major league start the most special of his career after months of struggles.

“Felicidades!”—congratulations—fans yelled in the tunnel outside the San Francisco clubhouse as Sanchez signed autographs.

Cabrera, the last batter of the game, squared to bunt on the first pitch— bringing a chorus of boos from the crowd. Sanchez then froze Cabrera with a breaking ball, setting a career-high with his 11th strikeout. Cabrera protested the call, looking at plate umpire Brian Runge in disbelief.

“On film he throws the ball hard, but it looks like he doesn’t know where it’s going,” San Diego’s Tony Gwynn(notes) Jr. said. “Today he looked exactly like he knew where it was going.”

Sanchez finished the Giants’ major league-leading 13th shutout of the year, following All-Star and reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum’s(notes) no-hit bid into the seventh inning a night earlier against San Diego.

“I think if you looked at the staff, he wouldn’t be the one you picked,” Bochy said. “He came out throwing 94-96 (mph). He just had incredible stuff.”

The last no-hitter in San Francisco was pitched by Florida’s Kevin Brown on June 10, 1997, at Candlestick Park—so this was the first at the Giants’ 10-year-old waterfront ballpark.

Pablo Sandoval(notes) hit a three-run homer to center off Josh Banks(notes) (1-1) in the fifth. Rowand also had three RBIs.

Uribe and Whiteside had RBI singles in a four-run second inning. Rowand added a two-run single.

Whiteside started in place of regular catcher Bengie Molina(notes), whose wife went into labor Friday.

NOTES: It was the first no-hitter by a Giants lefty since Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell pitched one for the New York Giants against Pittsburgh on May 8, 1929. … A 27th-round draft pick in 2004, Sanchez pitched four no-hitters in college for NAIA Ohio Dominican.

All you people are idiots. You know how many times I heard stupid "Giants fans" said we should trade Cain? And now look at him. I'm sick and tired of stupid Giants fans thinking we should trade our pitching for a mid-tier hitter. Go to bed, will you please!

katdoe3500 - they may be closer to the rockies, but that only means both the Giants AND Rockies are coming.

Great game, to bad the giants are closer to the rockies then the Dodgers. The giants will lose, again and their fans will say "maybe next year", again. They might have left their heart in San Francisco but they left their trophy case in New York.

According to CSN Bay Area the last Giants lefty to throw a no no was Mike McCormack (sp?) in 1959 not 1929 like the story says at the bottom.

blue - Its not a good idea to say that after the Giants throw a no hitter and score 8 runs. Maybe when they lose you should say that, it will make you look like less of an idiot.

    I agree with Greg P.
There's been a lot of talk about trades with the need to add a bat (or two) to this Giant's lineup. The funny thing is, if you've followed this team for any great length of time, you will undoubtedly notice a gradual gelling of team chemistry. There really doesn't seem to be a (greater-than-thou) "supers-star" present on this team (as they've had the past 15 seasons or so).
However, I get this feeling that if they traded (to upgrade) any of these guys right now, the only result would be a set-back to the overall chemistry that's been formulating over the past two seasons. Just look at the younger ball players on this team; give them enough time and experience to grow individually, and with each other... you're going to find a close-knit team worthy of playoff stature.
When this season began, these guys were predicted to be at the bottom of the barrel; with the capability of scoring no more than a few runs per game... and in April and May, that was true. Recently however, their bats are as explosive as any other team out there.
The SF Giants have the second best record in the National League right now, and the fifth best overall. These guys are for real.

I dont think there are any players available that the Giants should go after. The Giants have a good solid club right now with excellent pitching. I say stay pat for this season and they may just surprise you. This team may be like the magic Mets that won the world series in 1969. I can see the Dodgers maybe just folding up.. They think they are hot @#$% anyway...and i dont like them.

I still don't get why some announcers refuse to say "no hitter" or "perfect game" for fear of jinxing the pitcher. If saying it effects the pitcher, it is only if you actually say it to him. I understand that in the dugout it is your job not to say anything. But when you are announcing a game your job is to inform the viewer or listener. Many casual fans watching the Giants broadcast would have been confused as to how the error affected the perfect game because the announcers (both of whom I like) didn't explain it for fear of using the word "no hitter" or "perfect game".

Nick theres a differece in those wildcard teams that made the world series they didnt choke like our giants did in 2002. Also Lincecom vs Billingsly and cain vs kershaw you make a great point but you need to remember its a seven game series. torre vs boshey= torre kiper and krukow vs Scully= Scully Ishikawa vs Furcal= Furcal hudson vs uribe= hudson Manny vs pablo= Manny Kemp vs Rowand= Kemp Eithier vs Wynn= Ethier Lets get real the Dodgers want to win championships. The Giants need a bat Which they probably wont get. To comment on the Dodgers fans they are all over the place Fresno State, where i work, and where I eat its crazy and no there not all hispanic I know many white and african dodgers fans. Im tired of all the excuses Giant fans have I think i do want to be a Dodgers fan so my heart wont get broken anymore.

first off Gabriel S....don't be a giants fan!!! be a dodgers fan!!! don't want fans like you anyway, you live in the same area i live, and the reason there are so many dodgers fans is because most hispanics from the central valley came from the SD-LA area. they move up to the valley to work on farms and work in ag. Has nothing to do with the dodgers being good or bad. No-no is something rare, you have to get excited over it. And of course Giants fans don't just want records, but the Dodgers being in first place don't mean crap Gabriel S of Fresno. Making the playoffs is all that matters, not winning the division. In the playoffs, Lincecum vs. billingsley, Cain vs. kershaw....if giants were to play those would be the first time matchups, and giants pitching would own both of them. Winning the division would obviously be nice, but last time i checked, last world series the giants made it into they were the wildcard, as were the Angels. 2003 and 2004 wild card teams won the World Series and from 2002-2007 a wild card has made the world series. So by ZERO means do we need to win the division.

Could NOT be a more perfect time to trade J. Sanchez....certain that Mr. Sabean has fielded numerous calls already for his services in trade...congrats to Jonathan for a masterful, almost perfect performance, but on balance, he's still 3-8, and probably will never look this good again in Giant uni...time to make the proverbial hay while this ray of sun shines its brightest...those who were interested in him before, areextremely interested now...the price of poker has just gone up, and I can only hope that Brian Sabean knows when to go "all-in".

This is why baseball is great. In a seemingly meaningless Friday night game, AT&T park became the 7th game of the World Series. A 2-8 pitcher, dropped to the bullpen, with no shut-outs, no complete games, becomes Nolan @#&! ing Ryan.

Gee, all the above comments just make me want to say, down with all the
garbage comments, and we should just keep accentuating the positives.
Sanchez may have found the secret to success last night. He certainly
pitched a hell-of-a-game. The GIANTS are beginning to look like a real
good baseball team. I credit Boche, Righetti, and all the teacher-coaches
on the Giants Staff. NOW, if we can just catch the Dodgers--- it could
be a very exciting season, don't you think??? Better be looking in your
    Rear-View Mirror, Joe Torre.

Pitching this good does not fade!! CONGRATULATIONS Jonathan!! True the Padres were almost no-hit on back to back nights but they do have an All-Star position player in 1B Adrian Gonzalez who is 2nd in the NL in HR's and Tony Gwin's son who going into last night's game was hitting over .300.

On that note keep it up Cain and Zito bring your '02 curve that you used on Tuesday night's game. Is this the Giants best ever starting rotation in the SF era? I grew up in the 80's and the first club I rooted for was the '87 team as a kid....so the only good pitching staff that I remember, no offense to Krukow was that of the '93 staff.... with Swift & Burkett and they don't have anything on Cain & Lincecum!! Go SF Giants and keep up the good baseball....as a fan of any sport you have to respect what Jonathan just did. Congrats!!!!

Vdrive what the hell do you mean its fun to be a Giants fan. Im a die hard Giants fan and i would rather take a championship then a no hitter any day. Thats the problem with us Giant fans we get satified over someone breaking records or throwing no hitter. forget all that im not having fun watching the Dodgers hold the best record in baseball. So in all fairness Kipe and Krukow have us believing that the Giants are the best team this and that. Its idiots like you that believe him. So no its not fun being a Giants fan. I live in Fresno which should be giants country but Dodger fans our everywhere i look its sucks being a Giants fan.

"Congrats to Sanchez, great story but.........don't get too excited it was the PADRES. We could get no hit by a double A team. The Padres have to be the most no-hit teams in the last 40 years" That does'nt change the fact that Sanchez STILL had to go out there and do it. How many other times have the Padres been no-hit this year? Has Billingsly done it? Has Haren done it? Has Lincecum done it? Not only were they no-hit, but Sanchez came within ONE play of a perfect game. You can crap-talk it if you want. It just makes you look like a fool.
