Blanton outpitches Santana, Phils beat Mets 2-0

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Ryan Howard(notes) and the Philadelphia Phillies knew they had a great opportunity to get back on track with a hurting New York Mets squad in town.

Boy did they take advantage.

Joe Blanton(notes) tossed four-hit ball into the eighth inning and Jimmy Rollins(notes) and Chase Utley(notes) each homered off Johan Santana(notes), leading the Phillies to a 2-0 victory over the Mets on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of their NL East rival.

The Phillies had lost 12 of 15 and returned home after being swept by the Atlanta Braves, but they took advantage of the injury-ravaged Mets to earn their first sweep at Citizens Bank Park since taking three straight from the Nationals May 29-31.

“We wanted to try and take this because we know that team over there isn’t at full strength,” first baseman Ryan Howard said. “It’s July, but we want to take as many games as possible. We didn’t give extra outs. We didn’t make a lot of mistakes. When you look back, it was everything you can hope and dream for a baseball game.”

The defending World Series champions pushed the third-place Mets four games back in the NL East, handing them their eighth loss in 11 games. The Marlins beat the Pittsburgh Pirates to remain a game back in the division.

New York is playing without shortstop Jose Reyes, center fielder Carlos Beltran(notes) and first baseman Carlos Delgado(notes), and the Mets scored just three runs in the series.

Blanton (5-4) retired the first seven Mets before Luis Castillo(notes) bounced a single over third baseman Pedro Feliz’s(notes) head. Castillo was sacrificed to second, but was stranded there on a diving stop by Ryan Howard, one of several fine fielding plays by the first baseman.

The righty allowed little else, striking out five and lowering his ERA to 4.69. His biggest challenge came in the sixth inning after an 11-pitch walk to Daniel Murphy(notes) loaded the bases and had him visibly frustrated with his control lapse.

After a quick visit to the mound from pitching coach Rich Dubee, Blanton induced David Wright(notes) to ground into a double play, started by Utley.

“That was a big play,” Blanton said. “With the bases loaded, I’m trying to make good pitches and hopefully get him to hit it on the ground for a double play. So I really got the result I wanted. It was a sinker and had pretty good movement and I got lucky.”

Since snapping a seven-game winning streak on June 4, the Phillies Struggled through a 24-game stretch in which they went 7-17 with a .235 batting average and a 5.02 ERA.

Rollins, who batted .169 during that stretch, keyed Sunday’s win with his 30th career leadoff homer, on Santana’s second pitch. The 2007 NL MVP is 7 for 14 with a homer and three doubles after a career-worst 0-for-28 slump that included a four-game benching during the road trip.

Utley connected with two outs in the sixth.

Santana (9-7), named to his fourth All-Star team, pitched more like an ace than the struggling lefty who posted a 6.19 ERA in June, the worst June of his 10-year career. Other than the homers, he allowed one other hit, and struck out three in seven innings.

For the fifth time in Santana’s 16 starts this season, the Mets lost by two or fewer runs. He also fell to 4-1 vs. the Phillies as a Met.

“I did everything I could, but they were better,” Santana said. “I was trying to give them a chance to win, but in the end it came down to a couple of pitches. They did everything right the whole series.”

Brad Lidge(notes) struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his 16th save in 22 opportunities. He has converted his past three chances.

“In these three games, we did all the little things right,” Lidge said. “We have seven more games at home and if we keep playing like this, maybe we can create a little separation. “

NOTES: Phillies’ left-handed pitcher Scott Eyre(notes) was activated from the disabled list before Sunday’s game, with Sergio Escalona(notes) returned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. … Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez(notes), voted to the first All-Star game in his 14 career seasons, will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Reading on Monday, and is scheduled to play five innings. Manuel said he would like to see Ibanez get 10-12 at-bats before activating him.

It is good to see the Phils get back on track. They are the team to beat in NL. The Dodgers play in the crummy NL West. In that division the Phils would be up by 10 games or more. The Brewers or Cubs are second to Phils but neither has the heart the fightin Phils have. The Mets would be losers even if they had their line=up in tact because they have no heart. D. Wright may be the most over-rated player in baseball. He can not hit in the clutch and even has a tendency to boot the ball in field when the situation is tense. Soon the Florida Fish should go belly up but you have to give it to them they play hard. Go Phils.

'Blanton outpitches Santana'? No, it should read 'Phillies barely out-hit a pathetic Mets Offense'. But of course, that just wouldn't fit in a headline.

Im in the process of subscribing if that's for free, but my point is that why spending another 900.00 pesos per month on subscribing mlb.tv if I had already spent 800.00 pesos per month more or less on cable tv subscribing. Why not the big boss in philly sport create or make a deal here in our country or the cable tv management in asia to duplicate what the yankees have been doing in the cable satellite tv.

im a philles loyal fan but the sad thing is that i cannot watch them live over the cable tv network because
its already being pre-arrange by our network cable satellite here in the philippines to show only the yankees! yankees! yankees! vs the rest of american league team. Unfortunately my philles are in the national league, i can only watch live if they play the yankees in which they only play 6 games this season.

I love the people that talk up the Mets. Of the starting 8, maybe 2 Mets would start on the Phils (Wright and Beltran) -- meaning they would be a upgrade over what the Phils are putting out there (Beltran is the uncertain one). Delgada wouldnt start for any other team in the NL East -- that is saying more to the quality of 1st basemen in the division than a put down of Delgado. Santana is one of the top 3 pitchers in Baseball more for his consistency nowadays than for his stuff. That being said, as a staff, I would take the Phils staff over the Mets staff in a close call -- I dont think you can downplay having quality lefthanders in the bullpen or the rotation like the Phils have. The other thing in the Phils favor is that while they wont keep up that .700 winning percentage on the road, they definitely wont keep up their poor home record either. So, the second half is shaping up to be a good one; though, if the Mets dont get healthy or make a trade soon, they may be too far out of it to be a factor down the stretch.

Big Dog (43) Your posting contains some good food for thought, but why do you insist on using the ""question and answer" format? IT'S ANNOYING!
Why do people do that? It's bad enough when live commentators do it on TV, but at least you don't have to actually READ the question, and then the (typically) OBVIOUS answer.

Do I wish people would stop the annoying "ask your own question then answer it technique"? YES!
Do I think it will ever end now that it has become ingrained in the pop culture of our society? NO!

Please - if you want to make a statement, why not just make it, and stop wasting your own time and the readers' time? Instead of ... "Are the Mets the best team in the National League? No. Are they the best one in the Nat'l East when healthy? Yes. Is David Wright in a slump now? Yes. Without Wright or the other three All Stars in their lineup (Beltran, Reyes, Delgado) can the Mets get over .500? No. If their GM refused to make a trade for Adam Dunn or some other power hitter, it will only get worse, until the All Stars come back. Even then, will it be too late? Maybe."

How about something like this: "The Mets are not the best team in the National League, but when healthy, they are arguably the best in the East. With Wright in a slump and three All Stars (Beltran, Reyes, Delgado) on the DL, they can't realistically expect to play over .500 ball. If the GM refuses to make a trade for Adam Dunn or some other power hitter, it will only get worse until the team is healthy again. Sadly, even then it may be too late."

The last thing you said in your post was "All good questions." Well, sort of, but why were they questions at all? Just say what's on your mind, Big Dog!

responding to the top "top ten pitcher" posts, I think you are failing to take into account the leagues when you rate NL pitchers so high. let's see lincecum in the AL east against yanks, sox, rays, bjs, and o's. lets see halladay against the pads, giants, d-backs, rockies, and dodgers. besides the fact that the AL whipped the NL once again in interleague, you have to take into account the teams faced and the DH/pitcher factors. I hate the red sox, but beckett definitely, and lester and even wakefield have a claim to the top 10. santana's last game against the AL, he gave up 9 runs in a 15-0 loss. and while the all-star game is somewhat of a joke, the NL not winning at least once in forever is somewhat indicative of where the power lies.

I said this after last night's game and I say it again now. It doesn't matter who is on Mets DL. They would still find a way to lose. Some teams are like that and right now the Mets are one of them. Philadelphia has had teams like that too. Buddy Ryan's Eagles comes to mind. 3 of last 4 years the Phillies have killed the Mets. The other year they found a way to lose to someone else. If the tables were turned everyone knows the Phillies wouldn't have wasted this chance. The Phillies have been terrible lately and the best the Mets can say is they've stayed close and now they've been swept. Until the Mets win the World Series nothing anyway can say will change my mind about it. Thanks #38 for your post esp. mentioning Callison & the rest. Warren Brusstar where have you gone?

True they are slumping but its 162 games not 90 that make a season. but as a realist, as a Mets fan, looking at the team, I would have to be critical of Omar Minaya. Yes they got Putz and Rodriguez, 2 fantastic moves, but they need 2 solid starters and better outfielders than Ryan Church/ Daniel Murphy/ Fernando Tatis and whoever else. one thing you cant predict is injury. The Mets are playing with at least 6-8 AAA players right now. But, the Yankees seem to go out and replace players as the situation calls for ...and despite their money when was the last time they won a series? look at Tampa, small market, small payroll. It's a complex game, 30+ teams playing for the same goal and every year only one team gets to brag. the reason i know i am a true fans is i love my Mets whether they win 'em all or lose 'em all. Of course winning would be nice... the major frustration is inconsistency that is has been the hallmark of the team in the last 4 years. But we still have 75 games to go and maybe this year it will be another teams role to fold, it is HARD to repeat.

I think any sports fan who counts on an opponent choking , is ' whistling past the graveyard'. The entire National League got basically pummeled by the America league this year . The Mets getting belted by the Yanks and the Phillies' obvious home ground tenseness added to both of their poor play last couple of weeks. Both teams are carrying injuries and missing key players or having good players mired in slumps. That is why they are so close and I think will be until later in the season.I think the Phils will pull away but the Braves and Marlins are in the bushes!! The Nationals seem to take great delight in beating the Phils esp late in the season when they try to salvage some pride by playing spoiler! I do not know if we will win the division this year but I am sure we will be the national league playoffs at the least . Winning the National League pennant may actually be tougher for us winning than the World Series would be for us . That is of course if we can get that far . I see too many reasons and hunches to go into for that now but would be happy to give out a couple of my thoughts on that later if any one is interested and is not too ' p#@Sed at me to ask me for my thoughts.
I still love Johnny Callison and respect or admire Dick Allen, Jim Bunning, Chris Short, Pete Rose, big Mike, and others I won't mention now. I have been too long winded as it is.

Cain has always been underrated, but now I honestly think he's being overrated. I don't believe he's a top 10 pitcher at all. #13 .. how are Webb, Sabathia, and Billingsley not on there?

    1. Lincecum
    2. Halladay
    3. Santana
    4. Webb
    5. Haren
    6. Sabathia
    7. Grienke
    8. Hamels
    9. Billingsley
    10. Hernandez

If I had a nickel for every time the Muts fans use the injury excuse, I'd be rich. Yep, any day now all the Mets will be healthy and no one will go on the disabled list the rest of the year and they will win every game. The Mets should be happy that Washington is in their division so at least NY will finish ahead of someone. As bad as they are playing the September collapse is still ahead of them. Again. :)
