Cubs’ Lilly shuts down Brewers in 8-2 victory

CHICAGO (AP)—Ryan Braun just finished watching All-Star Ted Lilly(notes) shut down his Milwaukee Brewers, and he was frustrated.

So he let his pitchers know how he felt about their recent performance.

“Their starting pitching is a lot better than ours,” Braun said after the Brewers were beaten 8-2 Sunday. “They threw the ball a lot better than our starters did. They certainly swung the bats better than we did. Clearly they were the better team. It’s nice to get the one win but they clearly outplayed us and outperformed us all series.”

Lilly pitched effectively into the seventh inning and Derrek Lee(notes) and Jake Fox(notes) each hit two-run homers for the Cubs, who took three of four from the Brewers.

The Cubs moved 1 1/2 games back of the Brewers in the NL Central Division for second place and trail the first-place St. Louis Cardinals by 2 1/2 games in the division.

“No matter who is in there, we have to find a way to throw the ball better for us to have success,” said Braun. “I think when you’re constantly behind in games, it’s not easy and it’s not fun. Their starting pitcher was clearly better than ours this series.”

After having a National League record-tying eight players selected to the All-Star game last season, Lilly (8-6) was the lone Cubs representative selected on Sunday.

“We told him before the ballgame and he went out and pitched like an All-Star,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella. “Ted has done a really nice job here in the first half for us.”

Lilly allowed two runs on nine hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out nine, including the side in the fifth. He left to a loud ovation from the crowd of 40,359 in the seventh.

“I’m excited and I’m looking forward to it. I hope I get the opportunity to pitch in it, that would be fun, too. Maybe we’ll win so that the Cubs can get some homefield advantage in the World Series,” Lilly said with a smile.

Prince Fielder(notes), who was picked as a reserve to his second All-Star game, hit a solo homer for Milwaukee, and Braun, the top vote-getting NL outfielder for the second straight season, was 1 for 4.

The Brewers host St. Louis for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday and Braun is hoping Brewers general manager Doug Melvin makes a move soon to improve the Brewers.

“I wish I got to make decisions like that. But I know he’s trying to make our ballclub better,” Braun said. “I know he understands the significance of making a move and making it soon.”

Kosuke Fukudome(notes) led off the first inning by driving the first pitch from Mike Burns(notes) (1-2) off the left-center wall for a triple. One out later, Lee hit his 15th homer of the season into the left-center bleachers.

Lee made a late case for the All-Star game. Since May 1, Lee is hitting .323 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs. He only hit one home run in April.

“When you look at his overall totals now, 15 (home runs) and 51 (RBIs) is pretty impressive,” said Piniella.

In the fourth inning, Fielder hit a two-out solo shot to center for his 22nd of the season.

The Cubs added to their lead in the bottom of the half. Geovany Soto(notes) hit a sacrifice fly and Mike Fontenot(notes) had an RBI single to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead.

With runners on first and third and no outs in the fifth, Lee hit an RBI single. After Lee got caught stealing and Milton Bradley(notes) was called out on strikes, Fox ended Burns’ day with a two-run home run onto Waveland Ave. It was Fox’s fourth of the season in his 26th game.

Piniella has been getting Fox time at third base with Aramis Ramirez(notes) on the disabled list, but Ramirez is expected to be activated Monday along with outfielder Reed Johnson(notes) and reliever Angel Guzman(notes). Piniella is not sure how his roster will shake up on Monday.

“This is going to be a very, very not only difficult, but interesting decision,” Piniella said. “It’s not going to be easy, this is not clear cut.

Burns was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings.

Casey McGehee(notes) drove in Braun with a single in the sixth inning. He was 3 for 4 and 9 for 19 in the series.

NOTES: Brewers RHP Dave Bush(notes), on the 15-day DL since June 23 with a right arm fatigue, threw off mound for first time Sunday. The Brewers hope to have him back on July 15. “We’re going to take the cautious route,” Milwaukee manager Ken Macha said.

"wildman"...thanks for proving my point, i say it again: you have nothing intelligent to add. You will "whip it for me" if i come up to baraboo? how old are you? why not "meet me by the bike rack after school"? :) i make 2 observations: a) have you noticed your fellow brewer fans somehow feel obligated to apologise for you? b) you know nothing about me. suffice to say i am the wrong person to "threaten". i am NOT threatening you back, just stating a fact. when i was younger, i had an "unwholesome past" (that i am not proud of), i still receive dinner for 2 gift certificates from my old attorney each Christmas, he made enuf $$ from defending me in court in the past. My last case was over 10 years ago...figure it out. for YOUR OWN SAKE, :learn alittle bit about your "enemy" before your brain "writes a check your body can't cash". find a "safer hobby". fortunately, i have "matured"...you should try it. i have been to Wisc many, many times and always enjoyed my stays. i have plans to be up in L. Wisc fishing in end of Sept, not far from baraboo. i hope that all Wisc ppl haven't turned into neanderthals. Now, on an intelligent note: next week or so should be interesting, Stl sees Brewers then Cubs, could prove a chance to show a "dominant team" in NLC, yet i expect a 3 way race into late august at least!" Jeffree K"- thanks for the support, i would do same from ignorant cubs fan, we come here to "talk MLB, not trade insults" ppl...best to all.

Hey Dad....Funny story you wrote. Just don't get wasted when you're there because the troopers like to patrol the immediate area. I got pulled over last year for speeding....his car looked like a bloody UFO at night with all of the strobe lights- I couldn't see sh*t! Anyway, he asked if I was drinking and how they like to look for drunk drivers coming out of Miller. I was straight....I even had half a coke in the holder in my car which the guy saw. He ran my license and let me go with a warning. Pretty cool cop.

What I find very odd is how the Milwaukee Cops beat on the Brewer fans more than they do the Cub fans? I am not making a joke or anything I have gone to 4 games up in Milwaukee & can get better seats at Miller Park than I can at Wrigley & every time I go there & see Cub fans & Brewer fans get into it the Cops haul away the Brewer fans I guess they don't want to lose the income that keeps paying their salaries. Go Cubs !!!!!!!!!!

The difference between Cubs Fans and Brewers fans is Cubs fans can't pay enough to come up and spend time in Wisconsin and you couldn't pay a Brewers fan enough to spend 1 minute in the sewer below Wisconsin called Illinois

Yo Henderson. I definitely agree with your take about leaving Fox in the line-up, and also agree that moving Soriano back to second is the right move. Quite frankly he is horrible in left and plays way too deep. I am just afraid Fox might play defense like Keith Moreland and that is pretty scary too. I wouldn't trade D-Lee right now. He is crushing the ball. I would however be willing to trade some young players like Hoffpauir, Samardjia, Theriot and maybe a couple of other prospects for a player like Hanley Ramirez. I am sure I am dreaming too, but a line up with D. Lee, Aramis, Hanley, and Fox is down right scary. I would love to keep Sam Fuld around to play right and lead off. Put Soriano behind him, followed by Hanley Ramirez and D. Lee. Sure Soriano is struggling, but with a stud like Hanley behind him they would have to pitch to him. The line up may be a little to right handed, but we won 97 that way last year. Aramis, Fox, @#$%odome, and Soto would finish out the line-up. If not that get Brian Roberts and bench Bradley for Fox.

Would the Giants even do that?? They are right there in the wildcard race, so I doubt it. Something is just not right with this year's team. Part is trading DeRosa and Marquis, and I don't think Lou has that usual iron grip on the team. He needs to REALLY go nuts one day like he has in the past. Derek Lee? Boy, thats tough, but I don't think just yet. That guy has been solid since being here not to mention clubhouse presence, etc.

Nobody should be bragging about their team right now. The whole division is average. Hell, even the Pirates are only 6 out. I don't think LA is going to be shaking in their shoes over the team that does come out of the Central. Except maybe.....the Cardinals. They have the experience and LaRussa is a crafty one. Look what they did to Detroit a few years ago, and the Tigers were heavily favored if I recall correctly. Nah, too many issues with the Brewers and the Cubs.

When Aramis gets back, I think the Cubs should keep Jake Fox in the lineup. I think he can have an Albert Puhols presence about himself if he stays on the team. So, to successfully do that, the Cubs must move Soriano back to second base, allow Fox to take his place in LF and let Fontenot PH. Every now and then switch Fontenot and Theriote at the starting SS position. Some might not agree with this but it's time to trade D. Lee and let Hoffpauir loose and let him along with Fox take this team to another level. We can get a great starting or relief veterian pitcher. I would like personally get Lincecum from SF. But that is a loooongshot. Good try though :) Tell me what you all think about that?

although wildmanjay is not one of our favorite Brewer fans, you cub fans have nothing to be excited about! they are still 2nd to last in runs scored and will continue to dissappoint you. They will be looming at .500 all year while the Crew enjoy a pennant race. If thats not intelligent I dont know what is.

Hey, Jeffstorm, no worries. Too bad this was a near sweep of the Brewers for your Cubbies. Tough series. I hope the Brew could get the bats going against the Cards in the next series. LONG SEASON ahead. The race is so tigt, the Buccos are still in it. lol. Good luck to the Cubs as well. GO BREW!!!!!!

"PM" dont worry about "wildman"...notice his comments? nothing intelligent to add or say... true, i would feel embarrassed too, but best to blame his parents! i wouldn't say he's a bit of a sub-par intellect, but i hear he IS a HS Grad...in 2000....and 2002...and 2005... :) tuff trip for da crew, almost "deciding series" vs cards on the way...cubs see atl, whom always play cubs tuff. if they are weaker than norm, i hope its this year! then, cubs see cards...lookin like 1st place "activity" daily for next few days...i really feel crew needs pitching (SPs) but don't think Backe the answer...hope cubs SPs hold up the way they are pitching! looks like a season long battle. on another note, wheres Crews "#1 Fairweather Fan", Beetljuice? oh, forgot, she only posts after WINS by Crew! This is for her, IN HER WORDS from another post: "in your $@#&ing face, Crew!". REAL Brewer Fans, good luck. Your GM gotta make a move-soon.
