Gonzalez pitches A’s past Indians, 5-2

CLEVELAND (AP)—While their embattled manager received some good news, it was another disappointing day for the Cleveland Indians.

Prior to Sunday’s game with Oakland, Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said manager Eric Wedge will keep his job for the rest of the season, even though Cleveland has the worst record in the AL. The announcement came after the Indians recorded consectutive victories for the first time since June 11-12.

The positive news for Wedge ended once the game started. Gio Gonzalez(notes) pitched six strong innings for his first win of the season and the Athletics beat the Indians 5-2. The loss sent Cleveland its 50th defeat of the season and the Indians have dropped 14 of 18.

“We’ve had a tough first half,” Wedge said. “My job is to be out front and take the heat. I take full responsibility for all of this.”

Shapiro gave no assurances that Wedge will return for the final year of his contract next season, but for now any question about the manager’s status is gone from the clubhouse.

“He’s a great manager,” said catcher Victor Martinez(notes), the Indians’ only representative for the AL All-Star team. “He’s always been there for us as a team.”

The day also brought mixed results for Martinez, who grounded out as a pinch-hitter to end the game and is in a 4-for-47 slump.

Most of the day’s good news belong to the Athletics, who avoided being swept in the three-game series between the league’s two worst teams. Gonzalez (1-2) allowed two runs, six hits, and struck out a career-high eight for his second career win and first since Aug. 12 of last season when he defeated Tampa Bay.

Rookie Andrew Bailey(notes), Oakland’s lone representative on the All-Star team, recorded the final four outs for his ninth save in 13 chances, extending his scoreless inning streak to 10 2-3 innings covering nine appearances.

“I didn’t feel any extra pressure,” said Bailey, who was told he made the team before the game. “It was in the back of mind, but I still had a job to do.”

Bailey made the Athletics in spring training as a non-roster player after spending all of last season at Double-A Midland.

“He came to camp with an outside chance to make the team and climbed the ladder in the bullpen to where he’s closing out games in half a season,” Athletics manager Bob Geren said. “He’s gone from pitching in the Arizona Fall League in front of a couple hundred people to making the All-Star team.”

Cliff Lee(notes) (4-8) allowed three runs in six innings. The left-hander, last season’s AL Cy Young Award winner, hasn’t won since June 14 when he pitched a three-hit shutout over St. Louis.

Gonzalez, in his third stint with Oakland this season, was up to the task of out-pitching Lee.

“It was a challenge,” Gonzalez said. “It was fun watching him pitch and going against him.”

Lee’s frustrating season continued.

“It was one of those games where I had to battle,” he said. “They fouled off a lot of pitches. They made me work.”

Kurt Suzuki(notes) gave the A’s a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first. Grady Sizemore’s(notes) RBI double tied the game in the third.

Lee threw 30 pitches in the sixth when the A’s scored to take a 2-1 lead on Matt Holliday’s(notes) single. Rajai Davis(notes) drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice and went to third on a groundout. Suzuki walked on a 3-2 pitch before Holliday singled through the right side.

Oakland added a run in the sixth on Adam Kennedy’s(notes) sacrifice fly.

Jhonny Peralta(notes) hit a one-out homer in the sixth off Gonzalez, who was removed after the inning. Michael Wuertz(notes) struck out three in 1 2-3 innings.

Bobby Crosby’s(notes) double play ground ball scored a run for Oakland in the eighth. Orlando Cabrera(notes) added a solo homer in the ninth.

NOTES: A’s 1B/DH Jason Giambi(notes), in a 4-for-37 slump, didn’t start against Lee. … Kennedy and OF Jack Cust(notes) were the only left-handed hitters in Oakland’s lineup. … The Athletics will face RHPs John Smoltz(notes), Josh Beckett(notes) and Tim Wakefield(notes) when they open a three-game series in Boston on Monday. … LHP Aaron Laffey(notes), who has been out since May 22 with a pulled muscle in his side, will start for the Indians in Chicago on Wednesday night. … RHP Hector Rondon, Cleveland’s top pitching prospect, had been promoted from Double-A Akron to Triple-A Columbus. … The Indians are off Monday before starting a road trip to Chicago and Detroit. … Cleveland will play only five more home games in July.

If Shapiro keeps Wedge along til the rest of the year I hope they both leave at the end of the year. This is crazy, only two winning seasons in seven, with arguably some of the best young talent available. Cy Young winners back to back years, and what to they have to show for it? Laporta might start someday! They have so much talent available and all they do is squander it away. If I was Grady I'd tank it and have the surgery on my elbow now, maybe just maybe there will be a good change in management next year.....can't get any worse.

Charles A R that is not a bad start, one thing is apparent they are not going to spend any money in Cleveland, if they do it never seems to be spent wisely. I do believe i would part ways with Wood as well. I would not plan on getting much for the above mentioned players, but you have to start some where. The first order of buisness is to get rid of Shapiro, as far as Wedge goe's he has'nt realy had a lot to manage. Although some of his disicions are questionable at time's, and he is very predictable. As far as Cliff Lee is concerend i feel sorry for him, Wedge has nothing in the bull pen to bring in so he leaves Cliff in ( not that i could blame Wedge for that ). If he stays in these type of conditions he wont last long. The absence of Jake Westbrook doe's not help, either he can get healthy or its time to move him on even though he is a great ground ball pitcher. The season is over for the Indians so trim the non productive fat and bring in the young talent and let them play and get a huge jump on spring training. I cant stand to watch any more.AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

show me the rings #25, show me SF's rings (the Giants that is), what, how many? Were you choking, I couldn't hear you!?!
How foolish can you be? The A's get like 10,000 a night, if that... they don't have money to spend, and sure Wolf is trying to make money off the team, find me an owner who isn't, don't you think the A's would spend if they could... your idiocy is incredible, moneyball revolutionized the game, look at Boston, they are moneyballers... with MONEY!

#25 go crawl back into your cave and please don't come out again!

A's season has been over for some time now. Looking back at the start of the season, I believe it was over game one. The Ownership of this team (Lew Wolf and others...) have a plan. A lot like the plan that a 19 year old girl makes when she sets out to live life on her own. The A's rely on Welfare from the MLB to keep them going. Even if the stands were totally empty and no one watched them on tv, the A's would still turn a profit because they are collectors of the MLB Equivalent of welfare. Other teams that care and want to compete and contend for titles spend money. Sometimes they are willing to spend more money than the salary cap allows. When this happens, those teams that are trying to win are penalized for trying. They have to pay a tax that is a 1 for 1 tax on every dollar they go over the luxury tax threshold. So if team C decides that they are in contention and spend 20 million to bring in a player to help them get over the top and win it all, they are actually spending 40 million if they are already at or over the luxury tax limit. 20 mil to the player, and the other 20 mil goes into a fund. That fund is used to keep POS teams like Oakland afloat by rewarding them with money for not trying to contend or spend to get the players that they need. As long as Oakland keeps their operational costs under the MLB Welfare they receive every year they turn a profit and the greedy owner Wolf gets to pocket the money. That's great if you are Lew Wolf and don't care if the A's win or lose. But for fans of the team it really really sucks! So to recap, A's season was over before it began this year. The same thing is going to happen this year because the owner doesn't give a hoot if the A's win or lose. All he cares about if the bottom line and how much money he can squeeze out of us fans while putting a product on the field that is doomed to fail.Wolf creates 100% Bargain Basement Baseball, claims hardship to the league, and collects welfare checks for his tightfisted efforts. And for some reason we watch why? Knowing this all to be true, I have decided to spend my time this summer more constructively. Football is just around the corner. I am spending my time getting in shape in stead of sitting and watching a team constructed to fail. Thanks but no thanks. At least Sabian is trying and spending money to put a winner on the field. The A's are near the bottom in spending and near the bottom in the standings. Coincidence? I think not. I wont give that tight wad Wolf one penny more of my money until he spends some of his money on players that can contend and compete. NFL is right around the corner. Baseball has been over for some time now. The Niners look pretty good but the RayDUHS look to be the same bad team they were last year. But at least these two teams TRY and spend money to get better. The A's and their money balll/beane ball philosophy has ruined baseball for me...

here u go jd - my plan to "fix" the team:

trade francisco, shoppach, carroll, hafner, pavano, garko and valbuena. cut all the pitchers except lee, betancourt, c perez, wood and sowers. bring up laporta to start in left, santana to start at catcher, brantley to start at 2b. keep cabrera at ss, peralta at 3b and martinez at 1b. call up garcia and rondon to start. try to get a back end starter and a serviceable reliever for some of the guys traded.

LET THE KIDS GET THEIR FEET WET AND CONTEND IN TWO YEARS.

because of the market and the cheap owner, this team can not afford any key injuries and/or poor seasons from any starting player. there is no room for error.

Ya'll talk about the teams trash, managers trash, this trash that trash. Ain't a one of ya said what you'd do to fix it. When the Raffy's we're doin' it ya'll loved them, I suppose Wedge makes them throw crap. Nah it's Shapiro he makes them throw crap. Players play the game, name what you'd do different. otherwise you're just talkin' trash.

I love the team always have and will, but until the day they get rid of Shapiro and Wedge there going nowhere. To Brian S. the Browns will have a better record than the Broncos this year.

If that idiot Shapiro really thinks Wedge deserves to still have a job, they should both be fired. Its rather pathetic when you suck so much you have to trade someone you got to help you win a world series after 3 months

Very good decision by Mark Shapiro to keep Eric Wedge around for the rest of the season. I think he and his staff are doing a great job to benefit my favorite team in Baseball. That's one team out of the way for the Detroit Tigers!
