Ramirez hitless in return from suspension

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Manny Ramirez(notes) is back in the big leagues, looking like a guy who missed 50 games.

Returning from his suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy, the Los Angeles slugger barely hit the ball out of the infield in the Dodgers’ 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

He did provide a lot of energy to the team with baseball’s best record.

“It was great,” Ramirez said. “I was kind of nervous at first, but once I stepped to the plate I was fine.”

With more than half the crowd at sold-out Petco Park wearing Dodger blue and cheering him on, Ramirez went 0 for 3 with a walk. The farthest he hit the ball was a popup that second baseman David Eckstein(notes) caught in shallow center field.

He showed a good eye during his first at-bat, fouling off three pitches before walking. Right-hander Chad Gaudin(notes) brushed back Ramirez with the first pitch. Ramirez just smiled.

It was a loud at-bat, with Dodgers fans standing and cheering, and Padres fans trying to drown them out with boos.

Ramirez expects to be in the lineup for Saturday afternoon’s game.

“I need a couple more games under my belt. It’s going to take time,” he said.

“I thought the first-inning walk was amazing, considering the 2-2 count and he worked the walk,” manager Joe Torre said. “I’d be a little jumpy if I were him. There’s no question he’s rusty. The only way you can play this game is practice it, and he really hasn’t had a lot of practice.”

Ramirez popped up to end the sixth, jogged to the dugout to get his glove and cap, then headed for the clubhouse, his night finished.

Ramirez was cheered when he caught Chase Headley’s(notes) flyball to end the second inning. He took off his cap as he approached the dugout and gave a security guard a playful tap on the head with it.

The fan reaction “was great, man. It was the best. I want to thank all my fans,” Ramirez said. “I think they drove from L.A. just to watch the game and to watch me. It was unbelievable.”

Torre said he sensed the Dodgers were excited to have Ramirez back.

“It just feels like the atmosphere had little bubbles in it today, for me,” Torre said. “So hopefully we can hold on to that for a while.”

There didn’t appear to be any problems with the crowd. Some fans brought signs, including one in the left-field stands that read “RAMROID,” and some fans wore yellow T-shirts that crudely mocked the slugger.

Ramirez’s ban was based on evidence he used human chorionic gonadotropin, a fertility drug that’s banned by baseball, a person familiar with the suspension told The Associated Press after the suspension was announced on May 7, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details were not released.

HCG is popular among steroid users because it can mitigate the side effects of ending a cycle of the drugs.

Rafael Furcal(notes) had a season-high four hits for the Dodgers and Russell Martin(notes) drove in two runs.

“Obviously for the greater part of the season they’re still the top in a lot of offensive categories,” San Diego manager Bud Black said. “Manny makes them that much better.”

Hiroki Kuroda(notes) and four relievers combined to hold the Padres to four hits. Jonathan Broxton(notes) pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th straight save and 20th in 22 chances.

The Dodgers took a 5-0 lead in the first on four hits, two walks and two throwing errors on the same play.

With Ramirez on first and Furcal on second, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez(notes) fielded Ethier’s grounder and forced Ramirez. Shortstop Everth Cabrera’s(notes) return throw was wide of Gonzalez and caromed off the stands for an error. Gaudin tracked it down and his throw home was wide of catcher Eliezer Alfonzo(notes), allowing Furcal to score.

“I think I tried to do a little too much too early instead of staying within myself,” Gaudin said. “It got me a little erratic in the first, but I settled down and tried to keep us in the ballgame as best I could.”

James Loney(notes) and Martin had RBI singles, and Matt Kemp(notes) a two-run double.

Martin added an RBI single in the third.

Kuroda (3-4) allowed three runs and four hits in 5 1-3 innings. Gaudin (4-7) allowed six runs and seven hits in five innings.

San Diego’s Scott Hairson hit a solo homer in the fourth, his 10th. Gonzalez hit a two-run double in the sixth.

NOTES: San Diego RHP Cha Seung Baek(notes) threw 39 pitches in a simulated game Friday afternoon. He’s on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. … Furcal had been 4 for 25 in his previous eight games, including six starts.

The MLB needs to just get a system if someone took steroids they need to get a punishment that is a set punishment. But no instead they have different punishments for different people. Also i think if someone is proven to have done steroids they should not be able to hold any MLB records if they broke a record the comissioner should tell them that they wont be put in the books because they used steroids.

#67,Shaq,My bad and you did say the Dodgers are on borrowed time, but to say that Ortiz clearly was using was pure speculation, these drug tests have been in place before 2004.....But i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Sox had some players on THE LIST that exposed A-Rod...and 100 or so others......

Hey Bosox52..... no one here who likes the Dodgers.. Read the post....you clearly don't know what "living on borrowed time" means ...........you sound like another disgruntled Boston Red Sox fan defending their tainted and juiced up trophy......couldn't win one honestly... ouch...

#65,Shaq,These players have been tested on a regular basis and as far as Manny using while in Boston would've come out through the testing process,Manny was caught using a drug that recoops your body after a cycle of roids during this past winter,Ortiz clearly been using is your opinion and you're entitled to it,last year Ortiz had a wrist ailment and during the offseason he had surgury,so accusing Ortiz is just a lame excuse for an idiot Dodger fan such as yourself to justify rooting for a proven cheat named Manny Rodriquez.............

It's quite obvious Ramirez career hasbeen tainted by doping. Yo, Doder fans, you got what you deserve.....Big Papi was clearly using dope and drugs too.....now look at him off of it ! WOW......The Boston Red Sox should forfeit their trophies......It's clearly phoney.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are living on borrowed time.......sorry, but it's the truth

#31,17, To equate Pete Rose and his gambling to steroid use is totally absurd,Pete always played to win and his team always played to win,he bet baseball and the team he managed were never involved in any of his gambing activities, you wouldn't get Rose to lose a game he was ever involved with......Pete deserves the Hall way more than Manny, with the exception of maybe Roberto Clemente nobody played the game harder than Pete and I saw them both play, losing was not in Petes makeup,no way.................Pete has more hits than anybody and without roids,Manny can't ever say that....

I'm am tired of all the cry babies out there. Manny has done his time. no rules broken during that time. In fact. He's is the only player to do his time. I'm sure the cry babies are the same ones that quoted " the Dodgers will fall on their face with Manny gone". They didn't. Now the Dodgers are even a little more stronger. Sure, If I weren't a Dodger fan, I'd be scared too. This means they are one more step to the end of their teams season. As far as calling him a cheater. Our Hall of Fame is full of documented cheaters. From pitchers doctoring a ball, to hitters corking a bat. Even a few drug and alcohol abusers. Have any of them lose 50 games. NO!!! Hats of to Manny for doing his time without argument.

i wish the press would stop already with all the questions, The man has took a stance and all you dog reporters and Dodger haters have got to let it go. Manny is smart and well advised to take the stance he has by not giving any details surrounding his situation. For every answer he gives there will be ten more questions raised and more people incriminated.
if he does not give you self righteous assh#$es who have never done anything wrong or imoral what you want sooner or later you will go away. NOTHING is going to stop our team this year. Dodger fans are true to their team we understand nobody is perfect. That was awesome yesterday to see all the Dodger fans who were in San Diego supporting Manny. Dodger fans are the best!!!!!!

Wouldn't all you Dodger haters love for us Dodger fans to boo Manny out of LA and ruin the chemistry of our team.Especially you Giants fans. Bonds never admitted or paid any sort of penalty. That is the diifference between Manny and Bonds. Bonds is lying to us and everyone knows it. Manny paid with 50 games and millions in lost salary. So he has served his penalty and is forgiven by all true Dodger fans and we will support him all the way to the World Series Ralph, Shawn W ,Alex screw you guys you are the hypocrites and your team the Giants are never going to catch the Dodgers.

It's people like Manny and Arod that I can't cheer for a much greater player at this time then them 2 combined and his name is Albert Pujols. I was had by McGwire and I won't be had by Pujols. It's sad that everytime i watch Pujols or any other player reach another level of greatness that the question pops up, "is this for real?" L.A. don't give into this mockery, have some self respect...if there is any left.
